I hadn't realised that you could do it until I saw mention of it elsewhere.

If an MOT is needed it has to be one of the new computerised ones though.

Just to finish off neatly, following my earlier post to say that I ordered my disc online on the 15/12/04. It has now arrived safely and correctly this morning in the post 20/12/04, which taking all things into account including the Xmas post, I believe is pretty good.
Merry Xmas to All.

Tomorrow, I am driving down from Lanarkshire to Stafford, and back up on Sunday. Approx 250 miles each way.

Although I got my new Scenic in July, I have yet to take it on a lengthy journey like this so was looking forward to a good "drive", seeing how the 6 gear box was on long journey etc etc. Will be going down A/M74 and then M6.

However, over the course of this week, I have spoken to 3 separate people who have all been done for speeding on these 2 motorways. All were doing less than 80 mph!

Now having, ahem, far exceeded that speed on previous journeys, especially where the M74 is 3 empty lanes wide and you can see about 2 miles ahead of you, I am now faced with probably not going in excess of 75mph!

Ok I know the speed limit is 70 but I always thought that a blind eye was turned to anything up to 80? Perhaps the traffic police (who?) do, but the vans on the bridges don't?

According to the News Ihave just heard, Morrisons are reducing their unleaded to 79.9p and the other supermarkets are expected to follow suit.

I thought the diesel price differential goes up in winter because of increased demand for heating oil, which affects the balance of the fractionation at the refinery.

I know this unit has a vacuum pump on the back of it but why does it need an oil pipe attached? I have just removed the alternator from my son's car and put it in for repair but forgot to ask what the pipe was for. Regards. Read more

Hi,
Im having bother with the cooling system on my 92 passat 1.6 TD.
After idling for a while the temp goes up as expected, but at speed it just sits at 70 (lowest mark on the gauge). Also, the heater isnt blowing hot air at speed. The manual says it should be at about 90 degrees, normal running.
Does this mean it isnt getting round the engine since its not getting hot?
I drained, flushed and refilled the system with coolant a couple of weeks ago, but didnt remove the thermostat (realised this after reading grahamf1's post this month!). Could this be causing the problem....but it rises when stationery!!
Cheers,

T

Before reading too much into figures shown on a rather crude gauge, I think it's worth checking that the gauge is reading correctly.
Take the sender unit out, earth it with a jump lead, and hold it in a pan of just-boiled water. That should be the reading to aim for with the engine.

About a month ago, a propos the issue of possible bans on SUVs, I asked how SUV might be defined.

The only reply I got was from Espada III, who suggested that it would be 4x4 and at least 2.5litre engine, 1.5 tons, mpg below 25 (20 if petrol) and using tyres not suitable for regular cars.

Well, now, according to the Telegraph, the city of Florence has banned 4x4s. Their definition, apparently, is cars over 1800 kg in weight, with tyres over 70cm in diameter. Read more

The old Scenic 4x4 was not pretty, with all its plastic mouldings and spare wheel hump. Is there a 4x4 version of the latest scenic?

The VW Sharan is, or has been available as 4x4. Soon the Mk 5 Golf TDI will get a 4x4 variant as covered in Diesel Car magazine.

I know other manufacturers have tried and failed with 4x4 versions of ordinary cars, like the Peugeout 405 or Vauxhall Cavalier, but perhaps their time has come now.

I was flicking through the Autotrader today, and couldn't help noticing the vast difference in price between the 99-04 Toledo and the Leon. Is this just down to the Toledo being a saloon, or is it an inferior handling car as well??? The difference in price just shocked me, is all... Read more

I require some advice with regards to an insurance claim, for an incident that my girlfriend was involved in.

The incident happened on a roundabout and after nearly a year now the insurance compnies representatives have asked if she would be happy to go 50/50.

This was agreed by both parties. However a letter has no arrived saying "if you wish to claim for damage to your vehicle here are the other parties insurance details"

I have looked at previous threads on here and thought that each party should be responsible for their own damage?

Also, my girlfriend is not sure how to claim for her old vehicles damage from the other insurers if need be, because she no longer has it and was t/p only. If both party is responsible for own damage she will write off the cost of repairs etc.

It was an m reg cavalier and sustained damage to the door, wing, bumper and grill. Obviously uneconomical to repair, she sold it to her ex boyfriends brother who was in the trade for next to nothing.

Insurers are now saying she will have to provide a receipt for the sale and request a copy of the new owners v5 to prove she owned it and sold it on, and how much for.

What should she do?

should she even have to pursue the third party for damages, if she agreed to settle 50/50?

If so how is the best way to go about things from here? Read more

Think everything is covered and apreciate the trouble you have gone to trying to give me some advice.

As you can see the whole thing is a bit of a mess.

Will follow your advices and also contact insurers as soon as possible.

My rover 214 creaks under the strain as I or passengers get out, clearly must be something wrong with suspension/ a earing somewhere- what is this likely to be precisely and is it a big job to fix?

Could be something as simple as the handrake adjustment, brake shoes or whatever. I'm no mechanic but my car does exactly the same on a slant (the drive for example) when people get in and out. I'm told it's very easy to fix but I've never got around to doing it.
