3 car shunt - who claims off who? - Wilco {P}
As stated - hit from behind while stationary at some lights and impact pushed me into the car in front.

Happy to let insurance companies sort it out but just wondered? - am giving up the company car soon so want to avoid any liability claims against me.

Assuming that the car behind hit you first and then pushed you into the car in front, then everybody claims from the back car.

Subject to you not having done something daft like shooting out of a side road into the space without giving the guy behind time to avoid you.

Its loads more complicated if car 2 hits car 1 and then car 3 hits car 2 so think yourself lucky.

This happened to me a few years back at a dual carriage way + junction where a car ran a red light - I was car 1 and had to brake for a guy running the red light, the Xedos 9 behind me managed to stop without hitting me (I was watching him almost as intently as I was watching the prat in front) and was so relieved when he stopped 2 ft from my rear bumper, however that was short lived when a split-second later, the Bluebird behind him shunted him into the back of me.

Any way to cut a long story short, both I and the Xedos driver claimed from Mr Bluebird, however he counter-claimed that Mr Xedos hit me first, then he hit Mr Xedos. I had to provide a statement that I witnessed Mr Xedos coming to a stop safely and that it was only as a result of Mr Bluebird's shunt that he hit me.

Thankfully all sorted in the end.

If car 2 had hit car 1, then car 3 had hit car 2, the following is the result;

Car 3 pays for damage to front of his own car

Car 2 claims for rear damage from Car 3
Car 2 claims for second impact damage to the front from Car 3
Car 2 pays for original damage to front

Car 1 claims for initial rear damage from car 2
Car 1 claims for second impact damage from car 3

An insane situation which is normally ignored. The normal telling point is whether Car 1 felt one bang or two. If he felt one bang, then Car 2 was knocked into him. If he felt two bangs, then Car 2 hit him and was subsequently hit by Car 3.

The ridiculous point being that it has no bearing on which insurance company pays what amount of money since it will almost always be covered by a knock for knock agreement anyway. The only conceivable difference is the retention of NCD by Car 2 if there was one bang and he recovers his excess. But managing to count two bangs can ensure a nightmare for Car 1 as he tries to recover his uninsured losses.

I would caution anybody in Car 1 to stop counting when you get to one.

Did you have your handbrake on?

Thanks for the replies.....

KA - No handbrake wasn't on - I usually keep my foot on the brake pedal until the vehicle behind me has pulled up (acting as 2 "look I'm here" lights), then I'll stick the handbrake on....

...it's worked OK until now :o(

There's a flaw in the logic here somewhere :-)

I do what you do with the brake lights to act as a warning, just with the additional safety of having the hand-brake on already as well. Imagine the scenario of you being the first car stopped at a zebra crossing.

I'm sure you are aware of this now and humble apologies for sounding like a "benefit of hindsight" smug git
