Thought this interesting article by a leading R&D Chemist would open some eyes.

A word of caution ? You get what you pay for!

Below is an article written by John Rowland, Silkolene/Fuchs Chief R & D Chemist for 40 years.

Quote:

Costs of synthetics vary considerably. The most expensive are the ?Ester? types originally only used in jet engines. These cost 6 to 10 times more than high quality mineral oils.

The cheapest synthetics are not really synthetic at all, from a chemists point of view. These are in fact specially refined light viscosity mineral oils known as ?hydrocracked?. These have some advantages over equivalent mineral oils, particularly in lower viscosity motor oils such as 5w-30 or other oils with a low ?W? rating such as 5w-50 etc and they cost about 1.5 times more than good quality mineral fractions.

We use several different grades of this base oil, where appropriate. This is the ?synthetic? which is always used in cheap oils that are labelled ?synthetic?. Yes it?s a cruel world, you get what you pay for!

Now, you may ask, why are these special mineral oils called ?synthetic??

Well, it was all sorted in a legal battle that took place in the USA about ten years ago. Sound reasons (including evidence from a Nobel Prize winning chemist) were disregarded and the final ruling was that certain mineral bases that had undergone extra chemical treatments could be called ?synthetic?.

Needless to say, the marketing executives wet their knickers with pure delight! They realised that this meant, and still does, that the critical buzz-word ?synthetic? could be printed on a can of cheap oil provided that the contents included a few percent of ?hydrocracked? mineral oil, at a cost of quite literally a few pence.

So, the chemistry of ?synthetics? is complex and so is the politics!

The economics are very simple. If you like the look of a smart well-marketed can with ?synthetic? printed on it, fair enough, it will not cost you a lot; and now you know why this is the case.

But, if you drive a high performance car, and you intend to keep it for several years, and maybe do the odd ?track day?, then you need a genuine Ester/PAO (Poly Alpha Olefin) synthetic oil.

This oil costs more money to buy, because it costs us a lot of money to make, very simply, you always get what you pay for!

Unquote:

This is old news really but most people are blissfully unaware of the facts when they are looking for a "synthetic" oil which although labelled as such and is more expensive probably is not a true synthetic basestock. Always remember proper synthetics are not cheap so don't be fooled.

Cheers
Simon

Interesting to note that the permitted use of the description synthetic was varied as a result of a court case. However I assume (it does not appear to be stated) that this took place in the USA. Is the same ruling valid in the UK (or Europe?).

If not binding in the UK, does this mean some manufacturers are making false claims based on the USA ruling? Some bored Trading Standards employee could make a name for himself here! or cost his local authority a lot of money in legal fees.

Chill mods, not that sort!!

A friend of mine had to do this daft secret santa for his collegues, i asked him what he bought and nearly fell off my chair when he said "pink fluffy dice"!!!

Just to let you all know this motoring related gift is avaliable in halfords for £5.

I probably shouldn't say this but I have:

(a) a pair of red fluffy dice with white dots, rather large;

(b) a pair of black, not fluffy, but sort of nylon, dice also with white dots and on one side of each a heart and the words "I Love You".

I cannot vouch for their provenance, let alone how I came by them. Either that or I'm not telling. In the holiday spirit I offer them free (taker pays shipping + duty).

All enquiries will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Local Vauxhall dealer in Taunton is selling 10/40 fully synthetic ( Shell helix) as the oil for topping up VX 2.0TD engines.
I bought the oil as a precaution, so far this car has done 4500 miles and oil level has dropped about 3mm.
Car is a 2004 Zafira i thought the oil was 5/30 spec am i wrong?

Keep an eye on the oil level. Vauxhall 2.0 diesel engines have been known to drink a lot of oil while running in although i think the problem has now been cured, but just take care.

I followed a giant tractor doing 30mph on a long stretch of A road with double white lines. I know that one is allowed to cross the lines to pass stationary or slow moving vehicles, but how slow is slow? About half the cars in the queue overtook, the rest nervously hung back, for several miles. Read more

Yes, but a tractor at 30 just feels so much slower than a van at 30!

Hi all - Mrs V's beloved car has been suffering from a battery problem for some time. The car's not much used and we find after about 10 days the battery goes flat.
Recently, although the car would start, we'd find it'd lose revs and cut out when the clutch was depressed. I guessed the battery was probably at fault. Also, coincidentally (?) one of the rear doors has been unlocking itself periodically for no apparent reason. Yesterday I bought and fitted a new battery - got a heavy duty Bosch with a 4 year guarantee from Costco for £30 inc. vat. (Kwik fit quoted £65 for an Exide with 3 year gtee). The car now starts OK, hasn't shown signs of cutting out and the door is still locked but it's very early days and we may want to use the car over Xmas so I'm wondering if the problems we've been having are likely to have been due to the failing battery. Ta all! Read more

>>once locked has remained locked. >>

When I had this problem it was only when using the driver's door pull panel's central locking switch. Keeping the button pressed down whilst locking and unlocking the car, as I stated, soon cleared it up.

I recently drove from Cheshire to Nottingham. Surely this route deserves some road investment? Both the M1 and the M6 are completely out of the way; apart from last few miles to Nottingham. It seems to me that the only route that is sensibly direct is via Buxton, including treacherous mountain pass across Penines. Inevitably, I got stuck at 20 mph behind one of the many HGVs using that route. Sometimes you can't safely do more than 20 mph anyway; but the HGVs can't pick up much speed on the many safer stretches. Over taking is impossible for miles & miles.

What I would like is a nice new motorway from Cheshire through Derbyshire linking M6 to M1.

Can I squeeze in a couple of speed camera questions that arise from the above trip?

Travelling east towards Buxton (a few miles short) I noticed a speed camera on the OPPOSITE side of the road. I approached it, and saw it flash as I continued towards it. I am just about certain that there were no cars in the usual flash range in front of it: I remember an empty road. My question is this: could the camera have been flashing at me, on the other side of the road? I was doing less than indicated 40 in a 30 zone (I think. I'll take the lectures as read, thank you). Do cameras ever go off for no reason? I have not received any letters of an unChristmassy nature so far (nearly 2 weeks later).

In the next village that I passed through, there was a pair of speed cameras on each side of the road. However, on both sides of the road I noticed that the cameras were pointing in the OPPOSITE direction to where the white stripes were. I realize that you can get forward-facing speed cameras, but why paint stripes going in the opposite direction? My theory is that they started off with the usual 'flashing from behind' speed cameras and painted the road to go with it. Maybe later they updated the speed cameras to forward-facing ones but didn't repaint the road.

I am a bit worried now that the board moderators are going to politely but firmly tell me that speed-camera posts are now banned until further notice and that I should refer to Speed Camera Thread XVII. Read more

Yep i'd suggest that route as well - i travel from stoke to either Burton or Derby every day and i never have any trouble.

Hi Guys

I put the Vectra through its first service at my local Vauxhall main dealers today. It cost me £187...

Anyway, they have refilled the sump with semi synth 10w40 and I queried this with them as it doesn't seem to mention this oil grade in the handbook.
The service manager I spoke to said that they use this oil as "in the past" they have had warranty problems with customers topping up with incorrect grade oil.He also advised me that this oil would be perfectly ok to use for up to 1 year or 20k whichever is first.
So my first question to you would be is this ok , do you agree with this chap?

Second question concerns the Vectra service interval indicator.

On this car when the ignition is off , you can press the trip meter reset button under the speedo and the remaining mileage before the next service will show in the window under the rev counter.
This now does not light up at all when the button is pressed.
I queried this with them and they said it is working , its just recalibrating itself and will start to count down soon. Is this true? I would have thought it should show 20000miles or similar.

Thanks in advance for your responses!

PS They also changed the top rad mounts as they were creaking away like a cheap haunted house front door.... :o)

The correct oil for a Vectra C petrol is fully synthetic 0-30 to the latest vauhall spec. as given in the handbook (a link has been given on this site before but I can't find it)if the car is on the flex service intervals. The semi synth used is, as DD says, the spec for the earlier cars, and not recommended for a 53 plate car. I'm surprised a Vx dealer has used it. That said the use of fuuly synthetic oil to A3 B3 specs is aceptable with a reduced oil change interval. Check the handbook, and get back to the dealer and complain.

I don't believe the service indicator works by actually monitoring the oil itself. I beleive it looks at operating conditons, monitoring cold starts engine speeds etc to estimate the likely oil deterioration.

frostbite

I have recently upgraded from an elderly '89 Scorpio to an, er, elderly '93 version of the same.

This is my fourth Scorp and they have all been different in engine and dashboard layout as well as other features.

What has me puzzled on this one is the aircon switch - press on and the light comes on, press off and the light flashes together with a loud ticking, like the indicator noise.

Naturally, neither the Ford manual or Haynes mention this.

Since the last owner told me "the system needs recharging" (or is totally shot!?) I'm guessing it might be trying to tell me this but I would appreciate info from someone who knows. Read more

I have just had my Mazda`s first year service. Within a few days a rattle appeared from front offside. Took it back to dealer . They said some rust may have fallen behind disc whilst taking off the wheels to check. It appeared OK for a few miles after collection, then it started again. Took it back. They fixed it again but within 35miles it was back. They said it was something to do with disc brake. Anybody any other ideas? Read more

knocking noise could be drum brakes if they did a service. They basically ain't tightened something up, nothing to worry about...unless the wheel falls off. Go else where if in doubt.

Hi There

I wonder if anyone can help, my wife drives a L 94 Mondeo 20.Si which has just gained a fault. If you start the car with no throttle it starts fine and purrs like a pussy cat, but the second you press down the clutch or throttle it stalls. I think i had a simalar problem with a XR3i some years back and it was some little black box on the side of the engine which had cooked, but i'm not 100% sure. Any advice please !!

Cheers for now
