Mondeo starts then stalls as soon as - sinking1

Hi There

I wonder if anyone can help, my wife drives a L 94 Mondeo 20.Si which has just gained a fault. If you start the car with no throttle it starts fine and purrs like a pussy cat, but the second you press down the clutch or throttle it stalls. I think i had a simalar problem with a XR3i some years back and it was some little black box on the side of the engine which had cooked, but i'm not 100% sure. Any advice please !!
