Hi
Hav been having trouble with with 1.9 TDi passat 1994. Over revving, thought this was muck in the tank added cleaner which worked for a while. Yesterday morning started over revving again then stalled. Re started the engine but still over revving and stalling with no power when touching accelerater. Any ideas?
Thanks

My sister was pulled over by traffic cops the other day for having a dirty numberplate and was given a £30 fixed penalty. After the plods had left she pulled into a service station, measured 20 metres and asked the attendant to read the numberplate. Of course there were no problems in doing so and the attendant has agreed to be a witness to this. My sister is fuming and is intending to refuse payment. If it goes to court, what is the actual regulation for this and what evidence do the police have to provide?

Driving along a dark A road a few years ago, I became aware of a large dark shape about 100 yards ahead. I could see no lights, but then realised it was a lorry. As I got closer, about 20 yards or so, I saw that it did have lights, but it was belching out so much black smoke that it was completely obscuring the rear lights.
Hi everyone,
I've just bought a Cavalier 1.7 TD (Isuzu engine) which suffers from difficult starting. The chap i bought it from has recently had the glow plugs replaced but he says it didn't really make any difference, and the garage that fitted them suggested to him that it might be an air leak. Once started and on the road, it does feel lethargic compared to my last Cavalier TD, so i guess it may also be down on power too. I'm not sure yet, but i also suspect its MPG is slightly down too, being around 40 rather than the more usual 50ish i'm used to from these cars.
When starting it spins over for about 4-5 seconds without firing, then slowly starts to fire. It takes about 2 or 3 bursts on the starter before it finally fires up, and its similar when its hot, but not quite as bad.
Things i'm thinking are an air leak somewhere between the turbo and the head, but also could it be drawing air in on a fuel line somewhere, although wouldn't this result in a fuel leak? (i did read on another thread that a chap with a 1.6 diesel cavalier had a chafed fuel line which caused a similar problem) I'm fairly sure its not glow plugs, as its difficult to start when hot too, and also down on power.
I've only had it 2 days so far, so haven't had chance to have a tinker yet, but any ideas from anyone else on here would give me a head start. Thanks

I agree with Dave; checking the valve clearances should be among your first actions, especially as you say it is down on power once it is running.

Are we deliberatly keeping away from this (news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cumbria/4119961.stm ) story, lest it becomes another police bashing thread?
I honestly don't believe all the people phoning into radio programs and news stations to say that there were no warnings of the closure, no diversions, no one in authority moving up and down the queues to inform people, and no provision of provisions, except by the St Johns Ambulance. Read more
The M60 signs were this morning warning about an accident on the A1 at J47, and that must be over 100 miles away, so no idea why there were no warnings about the A74 accident on the M6. Infact, I've even seen signs on the M6 before warning of A1 accidents.
Hi All,
I have a slight problem with a vibration at idle on my Mondeo TDCi, it has only recently occured and sounds like a loose bracket or mounting around the front lower off side of the engine. It is not a typical diesel type rattle and cannot be felt through the car, only heard. As soon as the throttle is touched raising the revs marginally it disapears, it can be induced by loading the engine via steering input. The dealer says it is a "known concern" and a TSB is to be raised on this matter in January. Does anyone have any more info on this?
Also a TSB has been posted on these forums relating to the adjustment of the Focus boot catch. Does one exist relating to the Mondeo boot catch?
Many thanks. Read more

Subject: Rattling, metallic noises from the tailgate area while driving
Summary
Should a customer express concern about rattling, metallic noises from the tailgate area while driving, the cause may be excessive contact between the tailgate and the side bump stops. The material of the bump stop is not elastic enough to absorb the tailgate to bodywork contact noises which arise while the vehicle is moving. To rectify this concern, new rubber tailgate bump stops should be installed.

I bought a Volvo V40 estate (petrol injection/Mitsubishi engine) second hand in July 2001. It had done 30,000 miles in the 18 months since it was first registered. It went for its 70,000 mile service/MOT 4 weeks ago, but failed its emissions test very badly. My garage suspected that it needed a decoke, something that I haven't heard mention in about 25 years! Boy, did it need a decoke. The valves, inlets, injectors, piston heads were more-or-less submerged in the stuff. It was finally cleaned up and put back together again.............and it cost me the wrong side of 2 grand.
How can this have happened?.................I'm hearing that these Mitsubishi engines are liable to do this, even after a lower mileage than mine............has anyone had a similar experience, and what reasons were given for it happening?
Volvo simply say that they are not aware of any coking problem in their cars..............So I wonder why they stopped using this engine a year or so ago. I suspect that there is a basic fault of some kind which causes coking.............I'd appreciate hearing fom any one who has had similar experiences.

The proof that driving style affects coking is in the MOT Hydro-Carbon readings.
The first year after I bought the car from my father the HC reading almost failed (readings over 200ppm is a fail):
47,600 miles - HC 173ppm
56,500 miles - HC 63ppm
67,200 miles - HC 0ppm (obviously a reading failure)
77,400 miles - HC 13ppm (after 8 months exclusive Optimax use)
The engine is cleaner now than it ever has been. Driving style is key.
And to add; a very nice 78K mile Mondeo 2.0 Ghia 2001 Y went for £3,850 to a delightful chap from Southampton.

PS - Yes it's a camchain, so I've saved "about £200" according to my garage.
PPS - as for Ford Dealerships - never plan to go to one. I use a terrific garage in Southampton, E & J Jarvis.
This week Autocar have a used test of a Phaeton that has lost 18K in 9 months and 10,000 miles. It is up for sale at a VW dealer for £25k.
This got me thinking, has anyone seen a 2003 car go through an auction or trade with some miles on it? If so what price? Read more
The other big problem is bound to be service costs.
My parents made a mistake back in 1997 of listening to Quentin Wilson's advice and buying a second hand Lexus LS400 . Stunning car, amazingly fast, completely silent and a snip at around £17,000 at 5 or 6 years old. The self-opinionated Mr Wilson told them (on Top Gear) that a Lexus could be serviced for the same cost as any other Toyota.
No it certainly couldn't. Despite the car having good provenance and my parents very gentle driving style, the servicing costs were enormous.
My parents p/xed for a new Honda CR-V the following year, which while not as stylish has cost a fraction to run, proved 100% reliable and has hardly aged at all.
I'm sure that all £50k+ cars come with commensurate servicing costs.
Well, I think the 22nd is late enough, especially since my contact with a computer will be increasingly sporadic from now on.
Merry Christmas to all our contributors and readers. This place would not be what it is without you and, by and large, I thank you for that.
Have a good time, and good luck to you and yours in the New Year.

You ever considered turning to crime Pu? You'd probably spend less time banged up in the cells and wouldn't keep getting called out in the small hours :)

Janine,
check your oil level, diesels have a nasty habit of revving themselves to destruction when they suck in oil and burn it. Other than that it sound like the injection pump.
I'd trust this to diesel injection specialist or a good independent rather than a VW main dealer.
