A tribute needs to be paid to the Reporters out there. Watched the ITV special yesterday, which was riviting. John Irvine (a vetran of the Northen Ireland troubles) was brilliant a credit to his profession which is usually much malinged. Without them raising the public awareness of the scope of the disaster would we have (as a nation) contributed so much.

Further to my thread in "I have a question" where I reckon my Jabra bluetooth has died, I see that Aldi have one for £19.99 starting tomorrow.

Anyone else got one of these that could recommend it for in car use (motoring link!).

As usual with Aldi, I reckon if I don't get it by 9am tomorrow morning they will all be gone!

Any thoughts? Read more

I have just bought a new Blaupunkt CD/radio (double DIN size)from E-bay to fit a 2002 Vauxhall Corsa. The CD/radio went in to the cage the standard radio/cassette (Philips CAR 2004) was in, and the 3 plugs at the back all aligned, however there is nothing showing on the dashboard display, and unit cannot be turned on to enter security code.

The only sign that there is power getting to the new unit is that the red security light is flashing.

Unfortunately the new CD/radio did not come with a wiring diagram, and doesn't have a wiring sticker on it so I cannot compare it to the Philips radio/cassette.

As the Blaupunkt unit is shaped to fit Vauxhall/Opel cars I would have thought the wiring arrangement would have been the same as the Philips!

Has anyone come across this before, and if so please can you advise which wires need moving to make this CD/radio work.

Thanks

The unit may fit, but its a different make to the one you're replacing, so the display on the dashboard won't work. These split radio/displays are designed to work only with the original Philips units (thus tying you in to Vauxhall if you need a replacement). The Blaupunkt you've bought might work in a 2002 Corsa, but only if it had an identical unit fitted in the first place.

Today, 3*C in Scotland (it's heating up!).Put my passenger front window down.It moved fine.On the way up it started sticking, made a few funny noises then a "clunk" and the window completely stuck. You can now move the glass by hand. The motor still moves with the switch (although very rough). Is it likely that the motor is on its way and the window has came out of the mechanism? Is it worthwhile to try to repair myself with a new motor or will it be a "nightmare" duw to the fit of the door panels?.Thanks in advance. had this happen on my vw polo and also looks like my audi A6 rear window is doin the same. regulators on VAG's are a running problem. had my polo done by local garage - was 95 quid. you can buy the part from vw yourself for 85 quid and do it yourself buts its very tricky.

note if its just the clips that have gone then dont operate the window and you will save yourself a big bill.
on my polo the metal pulley cord became chewed up and it was a big hassle fixing it. both window regulators went within a two month period.

sorry officer...

Hmmm - 2001 Saab 9-5, found a puncture (#12 screw through the tread of the tyre - not subtle!). Okey-doke, I thought, off with the wheel, on with the spacesaver and off to the local tyre depot for a repair. Wheel nuts came off fine, but I cannot shift the wheel off the car whatever I try. Don't want to be too brutal (it's a soft pretty alloy) so haven't tried slegdehammer yet. But does any one know:

1. Am I missing a simple trick to free it?
2. If I call in the mobile pros (the only aternative I can think of) what are they going to do, and will my alloy survive it?

Any clues gratefully received! Read more

Most interested in this thread as I have got my first car with alloy wheels, was thinking of asking for all four wheels to be freed off as part of the annual service to avoid getting caught out,has anyone tried this and is it thought to be worthwhile.

Hi All,

I bought car seat covers for my brother's 1994 Seat Ibiza, but he says the headrests don't come off; instead of being able to pull the headrest and poles out of the main seat, the poles seem to be stuck to the seat and the headrest just moves up and down them.

Is there a release mechanism for the headrest on the seat ibiza? I don't want to pull the headrest any harder in case I do some damage?

Many Thanks

Hi Steve,

Sorry, computer got a virus and couldn't respond. I tried the above, but the poles don't actually come out of the seats, so I had to use brute force and pulled the sponge off the headrest.

Many thanks for the reply!

Would it be legal to drive my van ( www.coolmuledesign.co.uk/lt28/ ) without the black bumpers? I want to remove them and also some of the red circled bits in the pic too although I think I have to leave one set. Anyone know for sure what the law says about this? Read more

Colour coding the bumpers would go a long way towards creating a clean, sleeker look and you would have absolutely no worry about running afoul of the law

Hi

Can you help??

Our son phoned from Connecticut/USA yesterday - which is smack bang in the middle of Boston and NY, USA.

He went there on the 22nd and hoped to hire a car - but has been advised locally that he can't hire a car/suv as hereuires an international driver's licence.

We know that in some states you have to be 25 yrs old or over and he is 24 - but that is not the issue.

He will phone me later today with his cc details/etc and i will try and book a local suv pick up - will this work - and does anyone else know of this situation??

We went to florida 3 yrs ago and last year - rented a suv from UK - no probs!

All help appreciated!!

Thanks in advance!

Hi

Our son phoned us today (about two hours ago) - he had received info re Boston car hire - but eventally got one earlier today from Bridgeport, state of Cuneticut - an suv from today until Friday as most places close around 4pm for about 430 dollars.

He took his cc size licence and the paper that comes with it.

Thanks for all the help!!!!!!!

PS: It snowed there last night as it did a few days back - but only about an inch or two.

MY Mondeo (2004 130 TDCi) was suffering from poor performance, a lot of black smoke when trying to accelerate away at low engine speeds (up to about 2000 rpm, but fine after that) and high consumption. The replacement of the EGR valve has cured the problem completely and has also transformed the performance at low engine speeds. I know the EGR is something to do with exhaust gas recirculation, but what is this for, where is the valve to be found, and why the smoke and poor acceleration when it goes wrong? And why was mine said to be 'coked up' and is there anything I can do to avoid this happening in future? (No supermarket diesel used, Shell and BP only, Millers Diesel Plus.) I'm hoping that one of those expert BRs out there can explain!!

Many thanks.

Its where the exhaust and inlet manifolds are close together. Sometimes a right so-and-so to get at. Under 'certain circumstances' it lets exhaust gasses into the inlet. Mainly for emission regulations. ISTR that it was opened on the overrun, but I'm not 100% on that.
