Bluetooth Headset - BobbyG
Further to my thread in "I have a question" where I reckon my Jabra bluetooth has died, I see that Aldi have one for £19.99 starting tomorrow.

Anyone else got one of these that could recommend it for in car use (motoring link!).

As usual with Aldi, I reckon if I don't get it by 9am tomorrow morning they will all be gone!

Any thoughts?

I was posting a comprehensive reply which got lost because I got distracted midway through.

It can be summarised as:
  • good value - was double that price earlier this year;
  • I have one but don't use it because I can't be bothered to carry it around;
  • whether it's any good depends on the size and shape of your lughole: the headset itself is tiny;
  • I wouldn't wear it on a car journey on the off chance that I want to make or receive a call, but I wouldn't do that with any kind of headset.

Does anyone have any experience with the Powerstation/air compressor also on special?.

Right, I have nipped out and got a Bluetooth headset from Aldi. Very impressive with a comprehensive set of bits and pieces. A bargain considering the compatible Sony accessory for my mobile is £80.

What I want to know is, to what extent this can be used when driving? When exactly is using a phone whilst driving acceptable, as the current guidelines seem open to interpretation?

As I understand it, *handheld* phones are banned, using a handsfree headset is not banned, but tends to be discouraged anyway. Now if you were to continue holding the phone even while using the headset then that might be a different matter. 8-)

I have read that having the phone in your pocket when on a call is technically illegal, it must be mounted in the car itself. Even if it is lying loose on the passenger seat this would be ok.

I have just had a look on the DfT website and copied the text below. In a nutshell, it could not be any more vague. As ever, it will probably be down to whether the officer pulling you over, is subject to mood swings.

Q2. Is hands-free phone equipment allowed?
Provided that a phone can be operated without holding it, then hands-free equipment is not prohibited by the new regulation.

And pushing buttons on a phone while it is in a cradle or on the steering wheel or handlebars of a motorbike for example is not covered by the new offence, provided you don't hold the phone.

However, hands-free phones are also distracting and you still risk prosecution for failing to have proper control of a vehicle under Regulation 104 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 if you use a hands-free phone when driving. If there is an incident, the use of any phone or similar device might justify charges of careless or dangerous driving.

Just back from Aldi and there were a few headsets left on the rack, but also a note to ask at the tills for them. I gave the headset a miss though as I really wouldn't have a need for it, instead I spent £13 on a Dremel-type rotary multitool and am quite impressed with its sturdy build/feel, just need to hunt around for something to use it on.

I also bought the £25 Powerstation/air compressor. Haven't tried it yet as the battery needs to be charged for 24 hours prior to use. I noticed in the manual though that the on-board air pressure gauge is not calibrated. I also read that the jump leads are always live, but maybe thats how it is with the other jump start units so I can't place a strike against this one based on that. I would rather that the power could be switched off to the jump leads, as the mounting of the terminal alligator clamps to the unit doesn't seem as secure as others I have looked at. I plan to keep it in my boot and wouldn't like to think of the damage that could be caused if the clamps were to come loose and short.

Bought the Bluetooth today and after charging it for 4 hours, used it going to and from work today. Very impressed with it, very light and very comfy on my ear (I wear glasses so some of these ear clips can be uncomfortable).

I would go as far as to say that first impressions are that it is better than my Jabra I previously had.

Too Late!

After going to Aldi and getting my new bluetooth, I got a reply from Jabra re my previous headset which was broken!

Their reply? Send it back to them and they will send me a new one out! No receipt, no query, no nothing!

So now I will have 2 Bluetooths, or is that Blueteeth?
