Today, 3*C in Scotland (it's heating up!).Put my passenger front window down.It moved fine.On the way up it started sticking, made a few funny noises then a "clunk" and the window completely stuck. You can now move the glass by hand. The motor still moves with the switch (although very rough). Is it likely that the motor is on its way and the window has came out of the mechanism? Is it worthwhile to try to repair myself with a new motor or will it be a "nightmare" duw to the fit of the door panels?.Thanks in advance.

Same thing happened on both my Passat front ones within a three day period last month WW.
It was the regulator (which I believe is a bit of metal!) on both occasions. Luckily I was just still in warranty. I think that its fairly common in VW passats.
Took them less than half an hour each time so it sound fairly promising if you want to have a go yourself.
Yours sound identical to what happened to mine.

Probably wire operated..under stress they stretch. wire comes off runners..Not certain of Passat. but usualy all in one unit..Could be riveted in place as well..Window cannot come out of runner. You could do the job yourself ..Not usualy a difficult job..Not replaced a Passat one though.

temperature zero, elec windows don't work. Gve up tying to shift them, put car in garage. next morning OK

How difficult is it to remove the door trim in the Passat? Don't want to attempt it if I could cause damage to the trim

Try your local library for the Haynes Manual.
Got one for my Bora (it's a Golf/Bora Haynes Manual) from the library and it's mine for as long as I need it (or until some other library user requests it)!
It was just one Haynes manual out of dozens that the local library service stocks. It also applies to computer related books - must be upwards of 200 available and all right up to date as necessary.

Motor is probably OK. Its the regulator mechanism that's gone. Not a pleasant job to do (rather fiddly) and the regulator is not cheap!

had this happen on my vw polo and also looks like my audi A6 rear window is doin the same. regulators on VAG's are a running problem. had my polo done by local garage - was 95 quid. you can buy the part from vw yourself for 85 quid and do it yourself buts its very tricky.
note if its just the clips that have gone then dont operate the window and you will save yourself a big bill.
on my polo the metal pulley cord became chewed up and it was a big hassle fixing it. both window regulators went within a two month period.
