October 2004
Hopefully someone can tell me the procedure for this.
My other half was stopped by the police last night on his motorbaike during his commute back home from work.
He came onto the M11 heading out of London filtering past the traffic in a normal motorbike manner. As he was entering the motorway he (unknowingly) passed an unmarked police car.
He continued filtering up the motorway between the traffic at a reasonable speed, above the speed limit but definitely under 90mph.
The police car was following him but he didn't realise (he has a small 400cc race bike and when he's got his full kit on his arms block his mirrors).
He pulled off the motorway at the first junction and slowed down to 30 as he was now going into a housing area. Eventually the police car passed others and ended up directly behind him, at this point he saw it, pulled over and stopped. The police practically threw him to the ground, cuffed him and called a van.
In the station he admitted to speeding and the police admitted he was going at the fastest point no mor than 90 mph but they have decided they are refering him to the CPS for charging as Dangerous Driving. This we are going to fight as he does not feel he was dangerous and does not want a criminal record for speeding.
The police has said he will hear and face the magistrates in the next 6 to 8 weeks. The problem is a couple of days ago I booked us a 2 week holiday for late November/early December and paid the £2000+ for thge holiday immediately. This may clash with the court.
Since our only previous involvement with the police has been reporting his motorbikes stolen we don't have a clue what to do.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly welcomed.

I have a leak in the boot of my Golf. I took it to the VW dealer for its service and told them of the leak but they said they could not find anything, well its there and its wet. Does anyone know of a problem with leaks in the boot area? Its nearside corner of the boot coming under the plastic trim at the rear. Read more
Is it water or screenwash ? The pipe has a habit of coming loose either at the lock or at joint inside rear pillar trim.
Sorry for the *URGENT* but need to make a decision on this in the next hour!
Just got my 102k miles "51" Citroen C5 (see other thread) and it came with a 6-month "Silver" plan warranty from Motorcare Warranties.
What I need to decide is whether it's worth upgrading the warranty to one of the higher plans - "Gold" or the top package "Gilted Edge". It's hard to judge exactly how much difference between the packages there is the lower packages all list what is covered (long list of components and I'm no mechanic) whilst the highest package lists what is NOT covered (so easier to follow).
The cost would be £50 per step so to upgrade to the "Gilted Edge" plan would be an extra £100 for the six months cover.
Wouldn't normally bother but with the reliability record of the C5 I'm wondering whether this time it wouldn't be money well spent..

Fair enough - perfectly reasonable choice. Hope it was a waste of money, if you see what I mean.
When I'm on a road with the sun to my right (especially when it's lowish) I turn my sun visor to cover the top of the right hand window ~ which is how it's designed to be used. But I never see anyone else doing this. Am I the only person that does this?

Used to have to do this when driving down the A1 in the evening. When the sun gets low you can get a strobe effect which is really distracting.
Unfortunately the clip which held the visor in place was particularly tight which usually resulted in a dangerous high speed wrestling match. Eventually solved with WD40.
Not been used since!

Hi
I have a W-reg Skoda Octavia 1.6 petrol and occasionally (about once a month) the engine starts reving at 4500 revs. It can happen whilst stationary or driving. Whilst driving you realise what is happening quite quickly since the car doesn't race away from you, and you have to pulling in, stop the engine and restart and then everything is fine again for about another month. It is very intermittant but has happen 4 times. It definitely feels at if the idle speed has been reset to 4500 revs since if you have the car out of gear or the clutch depressed is doesn't go beyond that.
Any ideas? There doesn't seem to be a problem with the throttle cable. Restarting the car sorts the problem straight away.
Thanks

There may be a VAG specific reason in your cases, but I had a problem like this with my Vectra GSi V6 Estate. The problem was the throttle butterfly having become gummy (along with the throttle bore, also gummy) causing it to stay slightly (very slightly) open. Revs in my case were about 2500RPM.
The friendly and efficient Vauxhall dealer I used fixed it FOC in about half an hour with some TLC and "carburettor" cleaner.
Does anyone know of an on line drawing/sketch/diagram of the internals of a Rover 414 gearbox? Haynes ignores this saying it is "too difficult". Read more
The Rover main dealer pulled this exact flanker on me when they replaced my clutch - only mine juddered, rather than slipped. They wanted me to pay to have the gearbox removed again to investigate.
I pointed out that:
- if the seal was leaking then they were negligent to put a new clutch in, knowing it would become contaminated with oil straight away.
- the judder didn't happen before, so presumably the seal was NOT leaking before, so...
- either they had damaged it
- or the problem wasn't the seal at all but the new clutch/fitting
They had nowhere to go - they had clearly made a mistake (although which mistake was a matter of debate) and there was no logical argument against it.
So they responded by removing the gear box again, replacing my flywheel, replacing a few random oil seals, and refitting it all with another new clutch. I had to pay for the flywheel and the oil seals, and the cost of those two alone was more than what a decent independent would have charged for the whole job. They clearly had no idea what they'd done and were just randomly stabbing in the dark at possible causes.
It still juddered after all this, by the way, but not as badly as before so I put up with it, £1200 poorer. £1200 for a clutch. Bargain.
(And the original problem was a broken clutch cable mounting braket, didn't need a new clutch in the first place, but they took the gearbox out anyway...)
Anyway, long digression, but your garage has done SOMETHING wrong - they can't deny that. (But they might try.) See if you can get them to put things right. If they have any morals they might...

The other day, while my wife was driving, I counted 18 different road signs between the 200 yard marker and the roundabout at the end of a local by-pass. Does anyone else feel that there is a plethora of (unnecessary?) signs these days which are both distracting and make it difficult to distinguish the important from the trivial ones?

I read a report somewhere where Councils, Road safety organisations and the Police were starting to realise that road furniture was becoming excessive and dangerous.
Hi,
1994 Clio 1.4 RT, 60,000 miles
When the car is moving there is a droning sound coming from the front somewhere, stops when the car stops, more pronounced the faster you go.
When I move the steering wheel to the right very slightly it stops. To the left and it continues droning.
Could it be a wheel bearing and if so, how do I tell which one it is? Can I tell anything by jacking the car up?
Thank you! Read more
Having just had a sledehammer/grinder festival replaced a wheel bearing on a 14yr old vw passat, i would seriously consider replacing the whole hub assembly from a scappie if i had to do it again (i do have to to it again on the other side, but i've already bought the bearing).. and i'm getting into grinding
Im shortly going on a trip to Italy for a couple of weeks. On the return we're calling into Lausanne to see some relatives, and this requires passing over the Simplon pass.
Does anyone know of any websites which have latest conditions of weather/state of the road etc.. It will be mid November by then so would like to know if I will be able to check just before I travel back.

Has anyone tried to remove the headlining on a 206 to gain access, if so.
Any tips and what to do?? Read more
DL - I thought Pug headlinings were usually stuck to the roof - some of them are only partially stuck, as you can detect by resticking them with upward pressure.

We bikers don't want cars to drive with lights on as this takes away the advantage we have.
