Some time ago, carl_a posted a list of contending cars for next years "European car of the year"
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=25165
It was then suggested that we choose a BackRoom European Car based on your votes.
Mark(RLBS) has now added up all the results from your original choices and whittled the list of 31 down to 10.
Over to you to vote again.
Voting closes approx one week from today. Read more
Does anyone know if using liquid tyre leak preventors such as 'Viking' or 'Ultraseal' interferes with wheel balance ?
Assuming the wheels were perfectly balance prior to treatment with this stuff, should I experience any balance issues after having used 6oz (the recommended dose) in each tyre ?
Details of any experiences would be welcome.. Read more
To start you off. I only know of one person that tried it. Apparently it only seals for a certain time. 6 ounces is a lot compared to wheel weights. and doesnt account for it being thrown around tyre.I doubt any fluid inside tyre wont cause a problem..Will expect others to make a point. Not certain about it myself?

I am currently looking for a family car and cannot make up my mind what to get. My budget is £12k-13k and I want a diesel with less than 20k miles on the clock. I have test driven the following:
Vectra Diesel - Nice spec, much less torque than any other car I
have driven, and very annoying indicator system.
Mazda - When I told them the budget they lost interest and couldn't suggest any suitable cars!
Honda - Civic - didn't like it at all, poor equipment level and too small for price
- Jazz - Lovely to drive, but not quite big enough.
Volkswagen - Passat 130bhp - Excellent to drive and good equipment, but no hatchback.
Ford - Mondeo 130bhp - Excellent to drive and good equipment levels.
Toyota - Avensis Hatch D4D - Fair to drive, excellent quality and equipment, haven't found one within price range
Skoda - New Octavia 140bhp - Excellent engine and quality, favourite so far, but think it may be impossible to find a used one within price range.
Are there any I have missed, and which one would users of this board recommend.
Thanks for your help,

Maybe it is worth
putting up with being labelled as 'Mondeo-Man!
The way things are going, being labelled something like "BMW-man" has more of a stigma about it.
Back to the Mondeo, I just simply can't believe how good a car this actually is. Those who shun just don't know what they're missing.
For great deals, try Motorpoint or Trade Sales - you could pick up a brand new one for your budget - albeit the 2 yr warranty - but then if you buy 2nd hand, you'll only be getting the remaining warranty (probably 2 yrs) anyway. Yes they're imports but mine came with identical spec to the GB ones (well I haven't found anything missing yet in 18 months of ownership). Its the same car from the same factory at the end of the day.

That explains it! I was thinking of the car battery.
Would be doubtful about the life of a rechargeable plipper battery; most batteries have a limited amount of charges before their life suffers.

I understood it had one on the driver's seat.
only when there's the letter "y" in a day of the week.
you see the same 3 or 4 press cars
in the same few magazines
and they all tell you what a huge improvement the facelift model was to the old one .
if thats the case why did they shift so many of the old ones????
then in copies from a few years ago ago they told you what a massive improvement that was over the last model.
surely if it goes on the way it is well all be driving 300 mpg supercar estates by the time were fifty
then one or two mags pick on a in offensive little car like a getz or a touran or meriva something out of the ordinary and they know most people wont drive and then slag it off. But
also praise anything that comes from germany. or the odd quirky one like the honda electric thing which gets rave reviews because they think they ought to have a consieice when it comes to the environment.
also on another point if you went to the launch in porto expenses paid or where ever and it was for say as an example the last focus and slagged it off big time,
i bet you wouldnt get an invite to the next launch.
so i wonder how many journos say wow this is ace, what an improvement blah blah blah pass me the 10 year old port will you blag blah is my balcony facing the sea etc.
also do they have to pay tax on these trips i wonder

Tachometer was working fine until this morning when I started the car and the tachometer refused to rise above 1500rpm. The was no symptoms of failure before today. The symptoms are,
1) from idling rises to 1500rpm is fine
2) continuous increase in revs above 1500rpm causes the revs dropped to around 700rpm
3) lift-off or change-up (auto), which causes the revs to drop, causes the tachometer to rise from previous 700rpm back to 1500rpm
4) if keep constant speed, contants revs and thottle openning, the needle fluctuate a small amount (+/- 50rpm) at 1500rpm.
The car runs as normal which I guess the Engine Control Module (ECM) is operating without fault. Is there much I can do? I cannot find the location of the ECM to verify the output signal to the tacho, which is what I prefer to do before I take apart the dash to get to the back of the instrument cluster.
Many thanks,
Gazza
BTW, for Apilia's information, I have bought the strut brace from the company in Hong Kong as suggested. It costs £17.86 due to the high rate of Sterling. I would be fitting it soon and will let you know my findings. Read more
2l and 3l litre clusters are the same. The engine and everything else is basically the same apart from cylinder bore and final drive ratio.
The time has come where i need a new engine in my Mk3 GOlf Vr6. Current engine has done 90k, and is now broken beyond economical repair.
I have been offered a low mileage enigne from a 1994 VR6 - only thing is, is that its been sitting in a crate for the last 9 years & hasn't been used.
My question is - what will the engine internals be like after such a long period of non-use? Do you think i should consider such an engine?
Ive put this under 'discussion' as i imagine the replies will apply to most other engine types (?) Read more
Thanks, VR6. I'm going to show this thread to my mechanic. Having bought mine new and fallen in love with it, I'm aiming to keep it forever, and I was reckoning on well into six-figure mileage, anticipating a new cam chain at 80k. So far it's 48.5k and not a single missed beat.
On reading HJ's Astra road test, ( www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=148 ) he must have been one of the voters. I was another one, and I imagine Victorbox would have also done so. That leaves 17 to account for somewhere.
