Been thinking seriously about a Prius for next car. But with the winter in mind, and reading how it can be driven off without needing the petrol engine, I take it that the heating system doesn't require it either? In which case, is this the early starter's holy grail of instant heat from the word go?

Indeed - so it takes about a mile then which is pretty fast. (Apparently it stores hot coolant in a thermos to help with heating the engine up!) There seems to be quite a high level of user satisfaction with the car and can imagine it being easy to sell on a few years down the line too. Also heard a rumor about diesel and sport editions...?

My Rover 75 clutch slave cylinder has failed causing the need for a replacement clutch & cylinder.
The car is 3.5 years old with 38000 on the clock. Does anybody know if this is a common problem?.
Cheers.

Bo Selecta!

It would appear to be another design fault / money making idea... my clutch , master and slave cylinder seals went but my car had done over 80k at the time but i still don't belive a worn clutch should make your clutch master & slave cylinders fail !! cost me approx £700 to put right not cheap at all.

It's a fairly large file, even on 512k broadband it can take up to a minute to download and start. Don't think the host site's all that quick either.

I'm getting the runaround (how appropriate!) from my insurance company on this one - so the natural recourse is to the collective wisdom of the backroom.

My American girlfriend (full U.S. license, insured to drive her own car in the U.S.A. etc etc)would like to drive when she visits the UK and I'd be perfectly happy for her to use my car.

My insurance company says they won't cover her and implied they didn't think anyone else would, either.

She can, of course, hire a car here and get coverage for that vehicle, but has anyone a clue how I can get her covered to drive my car for a few weeks every year?

Hope someone can help because, so far, I've drawn a blank.

>> they just wanted name and DOB.
But I suspect that you were asked to confirm UK driving
licence for more than 12months ?

No - not asked for. Hong Kong licence, in fact.

Hope this does not show my total ignorance of computers!
My brother was given a computer. Worked well for a while but then got message "no signal input" on monitor. Has checked all connections and seem oK. Has tried monitor on another computer, works ok. Has tried another known good monitor, still gets same message. A friend of his tried a known good video card in the computer, still same message.
Is there a simple answer to the problem or are there hundreds (which I may well not understand?!!)Should ghe just go out and buy another computer (my suggested solution!!)
thanks for any help

I've left my disgo in many computers. Keep thinking it should be attached to a bit of string that is also attached to me...

I have just read HJ's report on the Prius II. Long term I want to move back to running an automatic but economical car to help cope with my drive to work (32 miles each way, 16 of them in heavyish traffic). Would a used Prius be a good long term car (10 years+) or would you end up scrapping it when some of the technology fails? How expensive are the batteries when they fail and how long do they last?

Hi,

I can't say one way or the other if it would be a good long term car but there are a few original Prius out there with big miles on and they seem to be holidng on well.

I've enquired with our parts dept for a price on the battery assembly and it was approximately £3k plus vat and fitting so if it did die outside of warranty i guess you are looking at a monster repair bill and so yes you may end up scrapping it.

Funny how when there's things that need to be done e.g work / study, the mind wanders and it becomes vitally important to know NOW what was the last car produced that had hole in the bumper for a starting handle. Read more

Starter dog....my Jowett has a fairly hefty one. Never been able to start her on the handle ( which is one from a Lada tool kit ) but useful for setting timing mark on flywheel and also for setting rocker adjustment.
Definately no handle facility on Sierra engined Renaults. Blank gearbox end where the dog would need to be.

I have seen many "plain clothes" Police cars (lights in the grille, magnetic blue light on roof) but today I saw my first under cover people-carrier!
Grey in colour; seen in Welling, Kent.

I'm just wondering if some of these unmarked cars with blue lights behind the grille might be security escort vehicles etc.

A number of companies have now started making replacement LED side light, indicator and stop/tail lamps in the common bulb formats for all cars.

I have recently replaced my front side lamp (501 type) bulbs for white LED ones - one car with 9-led bulbs and the other with a 6-led bulbs. They are brighter and whiter than conventional bulbs. Does anyone know the legal issues with these or are they perfectly fine so long as you stick to the correct colour ! Read more

I tried some of these multi-LED replacements for rear lights, they were rubbish and feable, as the light comes out at the wrong angle, it doesn't get sent in all directions by the parabolic reflector, and only a small 40mm circle of light could be seen on each lens.
