Does anyone know of an on line drawing/sketch/diagram of the internals of a Rover 414 gearbox? Haynes ignores this saying it is "too difficult".

What's wrong? What do you need to do?

The clutch was replaced about a month ago and is now slipping again. The garage who did the job say that they gearbox oil seal is probably leaking and caused the problem as that often happens on this model. (They say). As they want £300 to replace the oil seal (no doubt plus a new clutch) I want to see how big a job changing the oil seal (presumably on the gear box spigot?) is and if it is a job that could be done at home or by a mobile mechanic. This way I also get to see the condition of the clutch.

Replacing the input shaft seal/guide should be carried out when the clutch is replaced!!! I know I certainly change it when I do one.

It's easy to change - 3 x 8mm bolts and it's done.

It can be done at home (gearbox out....) but it's not nice work.....

The Rover main dealer pulled this exact flanker on me when they replaced my clutch - only mine juddered, rather than slipped. They wanted me to pay to have the gearbox removed again to investigate.

I pointed out that:
- if the seal was leaking then they were negligent to put a new clutch in, knowing it would become contaminated with oil straight away.
- the judder didn't happen before, so presumably the seal was NOT leaking before, so...
- either they had damaged it
- or the problem wasn't the seal at all but the new clutch/fitting

They had nowhere to go - they had clearly made a mistake (although which mistake was a matter of debate) and there was no logical argument against it.

So they responded by removing the gear box again, replacing my flywheel, replacing a few random oil seals, and refitting it all with another new clutch. I had to pay for the flywheel and the oil seals, and the cost of those two alone was more than what a decent independent would have charged for the whole job. They clearly had no idea what they'd done and were just randomly stabbing in the dark at possible causes.

It still juddered after all this, by the way, but not as badly as before so I put up with it, £1200 poorer. £1200 for a clutch. Bargain.

(And the original problem was a broken clutch cable mounting braket, didn't need a new clutch in the first place, but they took the gearbox out anyway...)

Anyway, long digression, but your garage has done SOMETHING wrong - they can't deny that. (But they might try.) See if you can get them to put things right. If they have any morals they might...
