The Harley Davidson of cars. She's got the look. Live to drive, drive to live. I still have my '69, the weather's improved (small matter of a 6.6 quake last night off shore) and I think a blast is due tomorrow.

Howdy all,
Ages and ages ago when I had the Fiesta, I had 1 remote key only. Ford said for another remote I would need another key, code it off that (all a bit of a blur) but the upshot was it would be over 100 quid.
I want another key for my Focus but it must be a remote. I have 1 remote and one 'normal' with a blue chip in. I have been told that if I have these two, then I can buy a remote key 'blank' and code it myself.
2 questions -
1. Is this true?
2. If so, where can I get a blank key from. Don't say Ebay! Can I get one from Ford?
Many thanks

99' civic had an accident and beyond economical repair. The insurer paid me at market value (£3500) but I intend to dispute the offer price given the car has always been serviced by dealer. In additon, cambelt & exhaust, battery & engine oil were changed 6 months and 1 month respectively.
I believe they will sell it at a cheap price to a garage for repair and re-sell the car thereafter (as the car is not really that bad damaged beyond repair, it's beyond economical repair!). If they can get hold of all the receipts and service records then they might get more money.
Now, should I send them those documents (apart from mandatory documents i.e. DVLA, MOT etc) to get some extra money back, to dispute against the offer price? How much will I probably get? I know even if I keep them it has no value to me but I won't want to benefit the garage to sell it at a higher price if I'm not going to get any extra money in return.
Any ideas are welcome.

where it says -
" .... Usually the policy provides for payment of the ' market value' of the vehicle (or words to that effect). How do we establish that? So far as the Bureau is concerned, two points are now clear. First, that market value is not the second-hand value of the car (unless the policyholder was in fact intending to sell it before it was stolen or written off) but what a replacement of similar age, condition and so on would cost. Second, [See: VALUATION OF MOTOR VEHICLES para 2] there are different markets. The appropriate one is not, as insurers often assume, the market for private sale and purchase of vehicles, through newspaper ads and the like, unless there is evidence to suggest that that is the market in which the policyholder intends to buy a replacement. As a general rule, the appropriate market will be the public one, so the policyholder gets what it would cost to replace the vehicle through a motor dealer. How do we find out what that would be? All relevant evidence has to be considered, but in particular we have to rely on standard trade guides! .....

do a forum search ( use button on the right, not one at the top ! ) for " accident write off value " or similar and you should find many previous threads.
I have been aware for about a month that F3000 was ending/has ended, but have never discovered why.
Too much competition for F1 perhaps? Read more
F3000 was never competition for F1 - indeed, it was intended as the feeder series. Things didn't work out that way as a lot of teams went below F3000 in their attempt to find the 'next big thing'
It's being replaced by GP2 next season, a Renault-backed formula that is intended to be cheaper to compete in.
As pointed out in the Forbes article posted on the thread, Renault are considering legal action against the driver for damage to their corporate reputation. I don't think HJ would thank us for being on the receiving end of a similar action so for safety I've pulled it.

My June 2000 Xsara Hdi 90 will not start. One day in ownership and while the engine turns it will not fire. Wee light on key not lighting up so maybe an immobiliser fault? Not a good start! Any ideas? Read more
And so off on the back of a lorry to dealers for a diagnostic check. Faulty fuel lifter pump (common problem they say). £256 later all is well and the car as a new lease of life it now goes like stink. Bit miffed to pay this out after 24 hours ownership though!
Hi I was wondering if you can help. The tensioner on my timing belt died, the bearings where all over the place. It occured at some traffic lights, I heard a bit of a 'clunking' sound and turned the engine off. I have tried to start the car but the engine would turn but wouldn't fire.
I have replaced the timing belt and the tensioner I left the Camshaft Sprocket and Cramkshaft Sprocket in the same place but didn't return them the TDC the car still wont start. Do I need to fear the worst and assume that the pistons have hit the valves and that's why the car won't start (with all my cars this has never happened so I don't know what the symptons are) or is it because the engine isn't at TDC. Or is it something else?
My Haynes manual tells me how to return the cylinder head to TDC by lining up 2 holes but not the Crank can someone please advise me on how to do this?
Thanks Read more
....as I said earlier!
But, I expect it'll only be two valves that are bent - so yeah, the repair option might not be out of the question.

The 1999 Passat TDI Sport runs 205/60/R15 tyres, which seems to be a funny old size - not especially common and a bit pricey.
My question is this: is the '60' measurement fixed based on the wheel being used? I.e. could I conceivably use tyres of a different 'profile' measurement?
205/55/R15s seem to be a hell of a lot cheaper and more readily available at knock down prices on E-bay.
As far as I can hypothesize, using a lower profile tyre would reduce the overall diameter of the wheel & tyre unit. Would this mean a slower road speed for a given engine speed in a given gear? Would lower profile tyres even fit the alloys? I don't want lower profiles to look cooler, I want a cheaper size of tyre!
If anyone has any thoughts, recommendations, or experience of this sort of thing, it'd be much appreciated. Also, info on the cheapest place to get tyres would be helpful...
Cheers.

I'd agree - 205/60V 15 is a common size used by many E36 BMWs.

After extolling the virtues of my wife's new Punto, predicably, things have gone wrong. The air bag, engine management and power steering warning lights have come on at different times and it has had to be fixed.
Now the clutch has developed a horrible judder and I gather that there are loads of Puntos out there that will have similar problems. Faulty clutches so I'm told that will have to be righted under Fiat warranty. Read more
No probs (touch wood) since the car was done.
My understanding is that a large batch of fault clutches were put into the cars. When the fault became apparent through a judder, cars were fitted with a modification but this has led to more problems. They are now fitted with a redesigned clutch.

got mine done a few months ago at the local ford dealers.new remote, blank key and cutting came to about £45. inc vat.
took them home fitted key into remote, read through owners manual on coding remote, went to car and all done in a minute or so.
as for ebay, same thoughts as others, why pay nearly the same for a second hand unit.
