Hi I was wondering if you can help. The tensioner on my timing belt died, the bearings where all over the place. It occured at some traffic lights, I heard a bit of a 'clunking' sound and turned the engine off. I have tried to start the car but the engine would turn but wouldn't fire.
I have replaced the timing belt and the tensioner I left the Camshaft Sprocket and Cramkshaft Sprocket in the same place but didn't return them the TDC the car still wont start. Do I need to fear the worst and assume that the pistons have hit the valves and that's why the car won't start (with all my cars this has never happened so I don't know what the symptons are) or is it because the engine isn't at TDC. Or is it something else?
My Haynes manual tells me how to return the cylinder head to TDC by lining up 2 holes but not the Crank can someone please advise me on how to do this?
Thanks

.....I take it from your description that you have a Diesel 306?
If so, I have never seen a belt fail on one WITHOUT causing damage. It's a dead cert. First port of call is to whip the camshaft cover off and have a look for massive valve clearances and/or shattered cam caps. The clunking sound you describe also backs up my fears.
You might be lucky and find no valve damage.....just broken cam cap(s) but it would be wise to remove the head anyway.
Best of luck!

Hi thanks for the advise, I have a 1.4 petrol, does this make any difference?
|
Good. That will certainly make repairs much cheaper.
However, I would still expect valve damage.
Lifting the head (1hr or so) is the next step.....sorry!

is that why the engine wont start or do i need to set the engine to TDC in order for it to start?
|
Most probably, yes. Due to a lack of compression.
There is a setting pin-hole in the flywheel and one in the camshaft sprocket, enabling correct valve timing. A correctly sized (6mm or so) drill bit will lock the crank and an M8 bolt will lock the camshaft, if you want to check that.

Thanks for all your help I really appreciate it. One final thing if the valve do prove to be dead it the easiest thing just to get a second hand cylinder head from a breakers yard?
Thanks
|
Yes....it would be - if you can convince the breaker to sell the head only.....

Could check that the 6mm locking pin goes in the flywheel and 10mm bolt in the cam sprocket before lifting the head...then check for wide valve clearances to confirm bent valves if it still wont start.
Maybe would be easier to replace the head if all valves are bent although a couple of new valves and having seats cut shouldn't cost more than about £30 - easier than sourcing/stripping down a breakers head.
|
....as I said earlier!
But, I expect it'll only be two valves that are bent - so yeah, the repair option might not be out of the question.
