My Bmw was registered in 1998 It has only covered 30k and has had regular oil changes every 6-9 months (as per Hj's recommendations) with Mobil 1 semi-synthetic and serviced while still having 2-3 service lights showing. The car has performed excellently with no problems. My question is would the car benifit from an additive? And if so why and which additive should I use? Read more

I have been offered a 2003 03 plate Clio 172 Cup for £9000.
Car is from a main dealer and has 30000 miles - mainly motorway.
Full service history and appearance is well cared for - just lots of stone chips on front bumper.
Inside is immaculate except for minor seat wear.
Any comments? Specific problems? etc?
ANY advice appreciated to help me make a decision!

Why do diesel cars generally seem to have the exhaust pipe outlet pointing towards the road whereas petrol cars have pipes that stick straight out parallel to the tarmac?? Read more
Keeps the rear bumper free of black 'stains' - ever seen a broken diesel tailipe that has 'contaminated' the rear bumper with acres of black smeech?
That's the real reason, the other, as has been said, is to keep any smoke at a low level.
The Xsara tailpipe is the odd one out - sticking straight out, along with Dturbo 306's

I want to replace the original radio/cassette on my 99 306 HDi LX, probably with a Sony DXS2000.
Anyone experience of replacing the orignial unit? Do I need a special tool to remove it? I understand I'll need to get a facia panel to match the original, but what about connecting up the new unit? Easy enough for a complete novice? Read more
You can buy these removal tools from Halfords also, cost about £4. If you're not sure which ones to get just ask somebody in there, usually quite helpful.
Does anyone have any information on the following?
I'm a Peugeot 205 GTi enthusiast, I bought two earlier this year but afetr getting them back to standard I found an excellent 1.9GTi model I sold them to buy it. I'm now thinking of buying another limited edition model.
A friend has said he once read if you bought or sold more than a certain number of cars it was classed as trading. None of the two cars I've sold have been at a profit (probably completely the reverse!!) so does anyone have any more information.
Thanks, Ian Read more
They may well show an interest, but the number of cars has to be much higher than yours. I too have heard 7 in a year from somewhere.
My brother in law has done this as a hobby for years and has never been questioned. I think it also makes a difference whether you buy cars for immediate resale or genuinely run them for a bit as your own cars.
A colleague was questioned by the DVLA because of the number of cars he had registered in his name. He had about 10 in a barn, some in bits or being broken, others he was working on. He was able to satisfy them that he was not a trader, just an old car enthusiast.
Reading HJ's aution reports, what does he mean by a provisional sale at, say £34,500?? Does this mean it reached the reserve or not. And if it did, surely the buyer must buy or am I taking too much of a leaf from property sales by auction?

Espada III - well if you have a family and need a Lamborghini, what else do you drive? Read more
I asked my Dad, who is a dealer and account customer at a number of auction sites, about having the highest bid on a provisional sale and then bidding for another car.
It depends on a number of factors. If the seller is in a position to agree to sell at a lower price immediately then the he will be sold the car at his bid. If they want to haggle then he has the choice.
If they can't accept his highest bid immediately and he buys another car subsequently then the auction will ask him if he still wants to buy the car at that price.
That's his experience as a regular account buyer. Private punters may not get the same treatment. They have to pay a deposit as if they had bought the car to have their provisional bid submitted. If the seller and buyer cannot reach agreement then the deposit is refunded.
Time has come to replace the catalytic converter on my 1996 Peugeot 406 2.1 TD, as the contents have become loose, causing an annoying rattle.
My mechanic and former MOT Tester, tells me that as there is no emission test for this car, I do not actually have to replace it, but merely use a replacement section of pipe. This is a standard Peugeot part apparently.
I would be grateful if any Back-Roomers can recommend this alteration, or advise me against for any reason. I seem to recall a thread, perhaps 12 months ago now, where someone said it totally transformed the car with a large increase in torque. The downside apparently was an annoying resonance from the exhaust.
I look forward to any reply, for or against.

It's sorted. They said it was too thin to weld, and have fitted a new one for £150 with a two year guarantee. A bad enough hit on the wallet, but a bit cheaper than the Peugeot price.

Please can someone advise me as to what the problem may be on my Alfa 146 (N Reg - 1.6 boxer). It has an intermittent problem when the engine revs itself (up and down between 900-1500rpm) when idling. It can happen at any time and is usually rectified by turning off the engine for a few minutes and restarting. I have had the idle control valve changed and the car was fine for a few weeks, then went back to its old ways.
I took it to an Alfa dealer for a service and they had the car for 10 days, it did not play up once and nothing showed up on the computer. The day after I collected it, it started playing up again!
Sometimes, on starting from cold, it also revs very high (2-3000) and the only way to bring this down is to turn it off and restart.
No garage seems to have come across this before and because everything is electronic, unless a problems shows on the computer, they seem reluctant to search for the problem. If I could at least get some idea of what\'s wrong, I can ask the mechanic to search for it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
