October 2004
apologise in advance for the long post...
I\'m going to try and be as calm as possible, because right now, I am fuming.
My clutch is playing up on my car, so I took it back to the garage I had it done at to have it looked at/fixed (it\'s 4 months and 5000 miles under a 2 year/20000 miles warranty).
I took it back in on the 4th October (last Monday) and I was told that they would need to make a few phone calls and to get back in touch with them later on.
I rang them up to find out what to do and was told to bring it in on Thursday (7th October), which I did.
When I took it in they said it should be sorted next day and they would ring me. They called me and said it had been fixed but wouldn\'t say what had been done, just that a mech had looked at it and it was \'OK now\'.
I went to pick it up and was told that the gearbox had come off and they had \'sorted it\'. It was EXACTLY the same to drive as when I took it in, plus now it had a squeak which wasn\'t there before.
I looked at it properly when I got home and the gearbox hadn\'t been touched.
It went back on Saturday morning with a few stern words and the garage promised once again to \'sort it\'.
It was there all weekend and I rang on Monday 11th October to find out the status and was told that the part was in and it was next on the ramps, and that it would be finished by that evening/Tuesday (12th October) afternoon.
I heard nothing all today and was passing on my way home so I dropped in to see how it was going, just as one of the mechanics got into it, started it from cold and proceeded to rev the engine until it hit the limiter.
He then went off for a mini joyride of his own (unbeknown to him that I was the owner and was watching).
I started to get a bit annoyed at that point and had a few more stern words with someone there who promised to deal with the mechanic and apologised.
I then spoke to the mechanic who was dealing with it, who informed me that he couldn\'t get a clutch for it for at least another two days (funny how they got one in less than a day when it was done first time) and advised me to take it home and call him in the morning to remind him to phone the motor
parts place to order a new clutch.
I parked it outside the garage to come back and pick it up later, only to find a scratch down one side, which was obviously fresh, and most definitely was NOT there when it was dropped off.
I called the mech out who was dealing with it and he just shrugged and said, \"what do you want me to do?\"
After explaining that I was becoming a bit frustrated with the situation, the fella turned his back and walked off.
I followed and an argument ensued in which I asked if they had a solicitor.
They have and when I said that they\'d be hearing from mine, the mechanic said \"You can\'t do anything, I know where you live. ha ha ha ha\"
What is my best course of action??

My '97 T4 Transporter aerial has 'corroded off'and my normal factors parts supplier tells me it is a dealer only spare. My main dealer, after 15 minutes on his parts computer, could not find it and tells me to contact a van specialist many miles away!
Surely I can get a replacement aerial for a T4 without resorting to this? The main dealer (cars only)suggested getting a roof mounted aerial, but as it is a HiRoof model (as I pointed out)surely this would incur unnecessary cost.
Any advice please, apart from the old coat hanger routine.

It is only available from a van specialist and because the kind 'design' folk at wolfsburg have to justify their salaries it has been modified so you will need the twig itself and two, yes two extension cables. Comes to around £60. You could try and fit a 'standard' high angle wing mount aerial but I couldnt be bothered with the extra aggro involved. Fitting the genuine part took less than 10 minutes.

Simplicate and add lightness!!
While fretting over the new family car (<6k, must last forever, must be safe) I've been thinking about NCAP scores. Can they really be reliable. I mean that in the scientific sense of "If I did the test 50 times, would I always get the same result?"
I know a very little physics, and a little about how they do the tests. The problem is chaos. The human body can flop around in many differnet ways (it has about 50 degrees of freedom) and in a crash the movements of each of these will be determined by speed, mass, deceleration, involuntary muscle contractions and incidental impacts. Such a system can only be described as complex and will behave chaotically. Which means unpredictably. Some of this probably applies to the car, it will deform differently depending on the nature of the impact.
So when an NCAP report says the dummy received an injurious blow to the side of the head, how much can we read into that? Not much, surely. To really know how safe a car is, they would need to crash many of them in many different ways.
I'm not saying they shouldn't bother. Perhaps this unpredictability is already factored into the scoring (it is only a five point range after all). But I wonder if it's all nonsense. Read more
Jaguar XJs and XJSs are, IMO, very good for the car's occupants. Some time ago, a friend of mine worked at MIRA doing the occupant equivalent of crash tests.
He said that while other manufacturers have to do lots of tweaking to reduce intrusion, and the head injury criterion value for the dummy down to acceptable levels, as Jaguars had long bonnets, and smoother decelerations, with a lower peak 'g' level, they just routinely turned up, did the test, and passed it.

Just had the old girl mot'd, and she failed on a torn nearside power steering gaiter, has anyone changed one? if so how easy/hard are they to do. The haynes manual suggests leaving the nearside gaiter to a peugeot garage. Thanks in advance.

Carried out the changing of the nearside power steering gaiter today, the nearside is a real pain to do because of a 2" stud bolt that holds the power steering ram to the steering rack. The normal method to do this job is to remove and dismantle the rack fit the gaiter and reassemble, l managed to avoid this, so if anyone is interested this is how the job went.
Firstly remove the trackrod, then undo the ram nut and remove the ram, once these are out of the way remove the old gaiter, the new gaiter was bought from local partco store, a universal gaiter which is more stretchy than the genuine part. The new gaiter was left in boiled water for a few minutes just to make it even more flexible, slide the gaiter onto the rack upto the stud bolt, now this is where patience is needed, stretch the first part of the gaiter over the stud l found putting a spoon inside the gaiter and onto the stud head stopped the stud piercing through, once the gaiter has pasted the stud it was just a case of securing the ends with cable ties (supplied in the kit) and reassembling ram and trackrod. The whole job took me 2 hours, alot quicker than taking out the power steering rack.
Hope this helps someone doing a similar job.

Peugeot 307 110bhp turbo-diesel, 2 years & 13,000 miles. Following its first major service it intermittently stinks badly of diesel in the cabin, most consistently after running normally a while from cold, until it's at least half-warm, then pulling up at a junction. Fumes clear on moving off. May recur at later junctions, but less.
Garage says 'no fuel system leak' and the exhaust is OK. I suspect an unburnt fuel build up somewhere on the inlet side of the engine which then blows back. I don't think its fuming all the time and I just pick it up in the cabin when I stop.
But why?!
Any clues anyone?

ECU controls vapour release into inlet manifold from canister..Ie when engine temp is what ecu sees as being correct temp/revs. will then release..Though cannot see that affecting what you mention..Wonder if their is a prob with seals on doors/tailgate..Just a thought?

Saw one of these today, its immaculate condition is what drew me to it. It was in white, and was rhd. It carried a 53 plate making it 12 months old at most. So what you might say, but this was a genuine original one not the retrostyled Golf. What's going on ? Read more
The last of the beetles had quite nice multipoint fuel injected engines and pretty much all the toys you'd expect from a modern miderange car.. oh, and brakes that worked! They were a loooong way from the originals, but still suffered badly from the effects of hanging a lump of engine over the back wheels. All in all though, a far more civilised car than you'd imagine.
Currently thinking of getting a diesel, and am quite keen on a Bora I've seen with the 100 PD engine. I have read CBCB (of course!)but would appreciate any advice offered. Is it underpowered for the car, should I forget it and get a 110 Tdi version or a 130PD? The car last had a service 4k ago, presume these have got variable service programmes?
Cheers Read more
Seeing as I collect a 100PD at the weekend, I hope it's good! I've read nothing about it to cause concern.
If 100Bhp isn't enough, there's a few companies chipping/reprogramming them including jabbamotorsport. Read of one chap with 150BHp out of it, although that sounds like stretching it a bit to me.

MINI adventure coming to an end
If you advertise your car in Autotrader, E & M etc watch out for a call from [company name]. They are very persuasive and even guarantee a sale ... no sale no fee... as they say they have buyers already waiting for your car who will ring you the next day to arrange viewing. It is unfortunately a con ... do not give them your credit card details even if they guarantee a sale. You have been warned. Surrey Trading Standards are collecting evidence. Please mail me if you have been a victim.
No naming/shaming. Company name removed. Thankyou. DD. Read more
My 406 is fitted with this (2.0L petrol, low emissions) engine but it hasn't run properly all this year. The dealer says there's a problem with the unit that advances the valve timing (apparently it has VVT just like the Honda's). They change the unit but within a few wks it plays up again - misfire/hesitation under load. Even when it's 'fixed' it's still only 85% OK, and the engine always feels very 'flat'.
Has anyone any experience of this engine - I'm on the verge of giiving up with the car? Read more
Hi,
Engine of the above car (CVH) is leaking a very small amount of oil. Cant totally see where its coming from as it is very small, but there is oil on the underside of the engine, and a few drops on the drive way.
Im currently using 5W30, but its due for a change now.
Would changing the grade to 10W40 have any effect on the leak, as its a thicker oil?
Im not worried about it, just wondering as the oil is going to be changed anyway.
Cheers,
Dave

I would get a 2nd opinion on the standard of repair if you can for free or cheap.
Get a quote for the scratch and suggest they cough up.
Report your story to Trading Standards.
Don't go near them again.
