When I'm on a road with the sun to my right (especially when it's lowish) I turn my sun visor to cover the top of the right hand window ~ which is how it's designed to be used. But I never see anyone else doing this. Am I the only person that does this?

No.
Don't forget, if you're watching other traffic to see how many do this, you're probably seeing 1000's more coming the other way than those going in the same direction as you - and the sun won't be in their eyes.

No, you are not the only one - or two, or three..:-)
Fortunately I'm tall enough not to need to use the sun visor all that often, but one handy feature of my VW Bora is a third, much smaller visor which flips down in the area just above the rear view mirror.
It's an area that often causes problems when the sun is very low during the winter months and this cures it.

Used to have to do this when driving down the A1 in the evening. When the sun gets low you can get a strobe effect which is really distracting.
Unfortunately the clip which held the visor in place was particularly tight which usually resulted in a dangerous high speed wrestling match. Eventually solved with WD40.
Not been used since!
