My best mate runs an independent retail business and has two vans for delivery purposes.
One of them went in for its MOT this week at the local Hi-Q outlet.
Result? It failed its test and the list of problems requiring putting right came to a four-figure total.
Somewhat taken aback, my mate decided to have it tested at another MOT centre.
Result? The cost for two new tyres and a crisp MOT certificate.
Not surprisingly my mate is a bit miffed, to put it mildly. I said it was probably because its a van used for business and easy pickings were envisaged.
I want him to report the entire episode to the Vehicle Inspectorate - he doesn't want to become involved.
I'll keep plugging away at him as it doesn't seem right that some other unsuspecting business or businesses might get landed with unnecessary bills.
It also happened to me a few years ago at Halfords (before the takeover) and I wasn't happy with the results of the MOT test. So I also took it elsewhere and it passed without any problems.
I did report it to the Vehicle Inspectorate at the time.... Read more
NC,
And, at the HGV station the vehicle presenter has to stay with the vehicle and operate lights, brakes and steering as required. Last week I watched a couple of terrified old dears slowly drive their WI minibus over an inspection pit. All giggles at the end of the test though.
Hi,
I have a Mondeo and my cigarette lighter isn't working meaning the sat nav doesn't work. I purchased the car in Feb and it didn't have a manual so I don't know which fuse to check.......I know the fuse box is behind the glove compartment but does anybody know what fuse it is?

Er
I am no expert on Mondeos, but you could always take the fuses out in sequence and examine them (I assume they are blade fuses)and examine them to check which has failed.
Failing that, give up smoking (or buy a lighter and road map)
Sorry, must have had a blonde moment
I'm quite interested in a Nissan Almera Tino 1.8SE+ that a smallish 2nd hand dealer has near me. It's low mileage for year (19k, 2001Y) but seems a bit overpriced at 6k. Anyone got any advice on knocking them down a bit? Or is that about right?
(Also, anyone here got/driven one? Comments?)

The haggle factor needs to consider...
Has he had it long??
Not sure yet, but it was originally on at 6500 according to his website
Does the price include a GOOD warranty & FULL service?
Not sure. What is a good warranty for something of this age?
Are you part exchanging something & looking for an over valuation,
on your car?
No, my car has had it! I plan to drive it off a pier or something.
Is it VERY good condition, good history, one owner etc?
Yes,seems that way from the ad (lady owner, full service history blah)
Are YOU wanting to pay his price?
If I had to I guess it seems OK
What are you comparing it with??
Picasso. Which are cheaper but I have reliability worries - whereas a Nissan is more comforting in that respect.
Best check your Parkers price guide, in W H Smiths -
but don't be too believing of their figures, either!!
According to Parkers it's underpriced, but Parkers seem barmy to me!
Cheers,
John
Leading on from the 4 police car thread:
Did anyone get caught up in the chaos in Hull yesterday? A minor accident at 5am involving a lorry and a car blocked the main A63 serving Hull centre just in time for the 8am rush hour - total gridlock across the whole city. The road took 5.5 hours to reopen.
Needless to say an investigation has been launched and they will be assessing how the Council's current traffic management policies - including blocking off routes - contributed to the situation. Read more
I thought of you yesterday morning when I attended a fatal accident. The fatality was lying at my feet when a man arrived and demanded we keep the road open because it would affect entry into his exhibition. Perhaps we should have swept him into the ditch!
Or did she?
Probably old news, but I haven't seen it before. Besides which, it's Friday.

You've got to admit, though, the toy yoda looks really nice...
Fair point. I hope she took it and the packaging, if she keeps it long enough she could sell it and get a Lexus.
...I guess you should do it properly!

I\'m surprised at the measured speed as I didn\'t think \'Blades were capable of it, but I guess when you\'re being this blatant, the exact speed becomes irrelevant!
Mods - decided not to post in Speed Cameras thread, because it\'s not exactly that subject. {It\'s related to speeding, so off it goes. Kick. DD} Read more
Glad (and not surprised) it's not just me - and I could go on about the bits with cameras in a 70mph limit but suspect that's been to death already.
I'd forgotten about the M42 - that one is absolutely mind-numbing.
I have also posted this in the general q/a forum as not sure which one would get me an answer.
Morning,
I have a RAV 4 which surprise surprise does leave the tarmac for use on country tracks near home.
The current tyres are Bridgestone Dueler H/T 235/60/R16 100H, these do not grip well on these tracks (gravel, grass, wet etc)and slide even under braking at low speed (13k miles on the clock and plenty of tread left)
I cannot find any A/T tyres in 235/60 so is it possible to fit 235/70/R 16 with a different speed rating?
Would I need new rims, would it affect the performance on road i.e. make the car unstable, would it cause any other problems?
Any assistance or tyre recommendations appreciated?
Thanks,
Gary (e-mail if you like gary111@btinternet.com or gary.roberts@galileo.com)

(3) Using a lower speed rating is OK I guess
I believe if you go under the manufacturer's recommended tyre rating you'll get into trouble with the law and your insurers. Theorically none of us go over 70mph so why would they spec Z-rated tyres that work at 150mph. :-)

DD.
All of a sudden my '98 MV6 computer display is intermittently suggesting I should check headlights and tail lights (can't recall the exact wording). It is intermittent and seems to go on as I turn the lights off, sometimes.
Of course, all the lights are working fine.
Any clues for where I might look? I'm hoping it's just a bad connection somewhere. Read more
PS I noticed that the indicator bulb is a yellow coated
bulb and the lens is white. I suppose this is common
and a bulb will be easy to obtain when the time
comes.
Yes, these yellow bulbs are very common. The coating tends to come off though and they can start to look a bit white (MoT fail, BTW).
