Reading the sales brochures for new VWs, most seem to have a disclaimer next to the engine description. Paraphrasing, "Thanks to anti-knock technology you can run this on 95 Ron petrol".
Does this imply that using anything other than super unleaded is cutting corners in a way that could come back to haunt you? Or have the cars really been built for ordinary, and super would be pointless/damaging? Have these FSI engines been around long enough to tell what the effects are?

Thanks for any thoughts,
Roger

Question non start punto
big davey

any suggestions on the cause of a non start punto, its a v reg mk 2 1200 8 valve with 10k on clock, checked for belt snapped,ok we have fuel and lots of it, we have spark, checked all engine management fuses. Iam informed before it packed in, it was running poor, no power spluttering etc, then it broke down. We have good fuel pressure at the rail although not tested with a pressure meter. It would appear to be flooding,as i put a new set of plugs in because the old ones were soaked, but the new ones soaked after a few turns of engine. Any help would be appreciated as all the ingredients are there for it to run.
cheers. Read more

Thanks for suggestions, just to update, had the ECU read for faults and one code came up, code P0105 which I am lead to belive is the inlet manifold pressure sensor. Not sure if this would give over fueling but thats what I\'ve got. Hooked it up and towed it today, it started but would not rev/pickup and as soon as the towing car stopped moving or I dipped the clutch, It just chucked it.
anyone any Ideas on the pressure sensor?

Big Davey.

I am surprised this has not come up; I thought at least that Michael's misfortunes would have aroused a lot of unholy glee.

Anyway, that's a cracking circuit. The first three crossed the line yards apart and might have finished in any order - though as it happened it was the order I would have picked.

There was enough action down the field as well. No way was this show boring.

And to console me Michael did put in the fastest lap! Read more

Has anyone told Ralf this?

I don't remember this being raised before as a specific topic but;

I assume that clicking on these banner ads for e bay and glasses etc actually raises cash for HJ and this excellent site of his, albeit fractions of a penny for each click.

Am I correct? and if so can I suggest we refrain from using our favorites lists and go to regularly used sites via this one? For example, e bay is my other main site, so if I simply click onto it from here then by that logic I should raise some cash for this site.

If this has been discussed before, then I offer my apologies.

Growler we are taking your recommendation and heading in a weeks time for the Pals/Begur/Palafrugell area. It does indeed look a lovely and ideal place.
We haven?t booked anywhere and will be taking a few days in France on our way down and find somewhere on arrival. Browsing the area the type of place we would like to stay is such as tinyurl.com/63e7e
With your knowledge of the area could you identify just where it is as I can?t find it in lists of apartments etc on the net after endless browsing and Pals appears to be an area and not a specific location.
From the photo it appears to be remote and wondered if there would be any accessible bars and cafes in the vicinity without having to use the car which isn?t a good idea after a few drinks.
Being out of season it shouldn?t be any problem getting accommodation on arrival but would like a target to head for similar to this one with something to do at night.
Any advice or alternatives appreciated?.

Yup, amazing that when boats need to be built there happens to be propelors and water jet impellors lurking on the dump.

Love it tho, last weeks skittles machines were hilarious. Read more

They admit that sometimes they purposely hide items they will need, such as the one where they had to build, and fire a rocket as high as they could, and then release an egg by parachute (IIRC) and try not to break it. In this episode, they hid rocket fuel pellets (was a while back)

I have been riding the motorbike in Central London a lot over the past two weeks and have received an uncommon amount of curtesy from other road users. In one example a red bus held up traffic on my right so that I could turn right out of a side road AND a red bus on the other side of the road stopped so that I had clear passage.

Just like to say thanks publically and sorry that I can not normally acknowledge it on the road as when on a bike in Central London both hands must be on the bars at all times and eyes on swivel mode because there's a lot going on including suicicdal pedestrians.

Although I don't live in the centre of London, I was up there the other week in my new van.

I noticed just how many other people showed courtesy whilst I was carrying out manuvres in the LWB Primastar. OFten letting me out in front of them.

The same is true where I live in Cornwall. I have heard tales of people driving hire vans and getting no courtesy whatsoever. I have never had that problem apart from one stupid woman who insisted in blocking access to my can near traffic lights and simply smiled and laughed when I told her I needed to get in.

That time I simply got in the passenger side and started her up as normal. I suppose she thought I had no rights as a scruffy builder when seh was driving a shiny new golf. When we pulled away from the lights she then tried to cause an accident by stopping in front of me thus holding all the traffic up - agreat motoring manuvre - not!

I think that motoring is base on "what goes around comes around" If you're polite and considerate to other road users and have patience with the odd mistake then you get less stressed and this shows to other road users, who then by and large treat you with the same respect and dignity.

Of course there's always the exception - just hope Darwin is at work here.....

Sorry if this question has been asked before (I've tried a forum search and come up with nowt).

When I start the afore-mentioned Vectra up from cold it makes a whirring noise that lasts for about 2 minutes. It sounds like a radiator fan, but it isn't the rad fan. I've had a couple of Vectra's and they both do/did this.

It's by no means a problem, but I'm just curious.

Thanks. Read more

Apologies if this has been done before - have 'Forum Searched' without success.

Clear that my Cavalier (2.0 Ecotec) has problems with the idle control valve - last few weeks the car has stalled or 'surged' at idle on a number of occasions. Looked at Haynes, but no guidance as to where this item is for cleaning!

Spent yesterday cleaning all the historical places which have needed cleaning around the throttle body, but not sure if I have inadvertently cleaned it or not.

Thanks in advance

Hello all. I think I may have asked something similar a while back but it struck me again last night.

This is my second year of driving a car insured in my name. I have a full years no claims so when I took out the insurance policy I am on now for the second year, I stated so. However, I haven't been asked for any proof of this. Now I won't pretend to understand insurance but this strikes me as a little odd.

If I was a little creative with my date of birth then I could have said I have 4 years no claims, (a lie) and got massive discounts. I'm just a little concerned that no-one has asked me for proof.

Many thanks

here is an "official answer" to your hypothetical question:

www.theiob.org.uk/digest/n/no_claims_discount.html

2. Proof of NCD - minimum requirement of three year' s NCD - proposer had no relevant NCD - whether insurer entitled to cancel policy

A car owner applied for motor insurance by telephone directly from the insurer. He confirmed that he had at least three years' no claims discount and agreed to provide proof. The policy was issued in June 1995 and the policy schedule stated that the insurance had been arranged on the basis of three or more years' NCD.

A claim was notified in December 1995 and the insurer learnt that the policyholder' s last motor insurance policy had lapsed in June 1993. The policyholder had acquired one year' s NCD at that time. The insurer only issued policies if proposers had three years' NCD. It cancelled this policy.

Complaint upheld

Almost any other insurer would have checked the proposer' s claims history before issuing the policy. In this situation, most insurers would have regarded the proposer as having no discount entitlement, but would have increased the premium, not cancelled the policy. This insurer would not have been prepared to insure this proposer, but we did not consider that it was fair for it to treat the proposer more harshly than another insurer would have done.

This proposer had mistakenly obtained cheaper insurance than he was entitled to. The insurer did not give premium discounts, but insisted on a minimum of three years' NCD. Its streamlined and efficient procedures meant that the position would only be checked if and when a claim arose. That might be a number of years after completion of the proposal.

We decided that the fair result was a proportionate settlement. Most insurers would have given a 50% discount for three years' NCD or a 25% introductory discount for someone in the proposer' s position. The insurer was required to deal with the claim on the basis that two-thirds of the proper premium had been paid. It had therefore to pay two-thirds of the market value of the car.
