Hi,

My Punto has an intermittent problem where the speedo either flys around the clock and jams at the far end (160mph) and makes a nasty noise, or where it sticks at around 23mph. It makes no difference if I am reversing, stopped or travelling forward.

The only way to fix it appears to be to turn the engine on and off until it works again.

Any suggestions are welcome :) Read more

I had exactly the same problem with a '95 55sx (right down to the 23mph bit!). Replacing the 'sender' cable from the gearbox won't work. I took out the dials (two allen screws) and jer, jer giggled the wires about and sprayed in wd-40. This didn't work either!

Solution - ring round local scrap yards. I got one out of a 'T' reg. for £15 and it worked a treat. Mileage on original was only 31k, so the replacement with 42k wasn't a problem. It is also dead easy - four wire-clips and you're done.

Good luck!

I have just come back from a holiday to Lake Garda, where I noticed there were 166s with the 2.4 JTD engine. I am amazed that it is not available as an option in the UK, as they might well have proved to be more popular than all the other engine variants put together. Read more

Hi,

I have a Vectra 1.8 LS Y reg (hatchback) and its making an on/off droning/howling noise from the rear that gets faster as I speed up. Also the tyres are wearing unevenly on each peice of tread, like a cog? Ive had the bearings and shocks changed but its still the same?
Vauxhall said to fit gas shocks because the car is getting old?
Sounds like a cop out?
Any ideas what could be causing this?
Ive heard about bushes and struts but am at a loss. Would be nice to hear from anyone who has had a similar problem.

Thanks.

Yep, my SRi wore out the inside edges of the rear tyres, leaving about 4 - 5mm on the rest of the tyre but took about 50k miles to do it, so it wasn't too bad. Seems to be a function of the rear suspension. However, the wear was even and not 'cogged'.

The Vectra can be prone to tyre noise on the back and this seems a function of the tyres fitted. From about 20k miles my passengers were saying there was sometimes a noise like rear wheel bearing droning. I had it checked at the dealer (no problem found)and eventually came to the conclusion it was related to road surface. It went away when the original Goodvear Eagles (NCT3's) were changed for Michelin Pilot HX. 30k miles later when I sold it the drone hadn't returned.

Longlife exhausts have a branch in Carshalton, which must be near you... www.exhausts.uk.com

Also do a search for 'powerflow exhausts' they do inexpensive custom made stainless exhausts.

I don't know how successful any of them will be at making an exhaust quieter than standard as they usually get asked the opposite. :-)

Golf Driver,1.6,1989,112k-Has anyone heard about a mod which supposedly stops the annoying symptoms of carb icing on Pierburg 2E2 carbs in cold/wet weather?Ive heard a few people mention such a thing, but what is the mod,and where do you find out about it,apart from going direct to VW HQ?Any help much appreciated.

There is a vaccum operated valve on the air filter.this controls diverter flap. ie. the flap/valve is located close to pipe connected to exhaust manifold heat shield. if vaccum pipes work will open this so as exhaust heats up. heat Is drawn in to manifold. so aiding warm up/preventing freezing. if the pipes or valves leak/fail. icing will occur. common prob with pierburg. though not the only carb to suffer it. Not certain about any mods. though may be wrong?

You won't get it out of the tank, through the fuel filler - it's awkward & takes forever.

I've made a pump, on a piece of ply & a length of fuel line.

Mail me if you want the details vansboy@onetel.com

It's a bit fiddly, but works!!

What are the wires that run to the wind screen washer jets for? Heaters? How do I know if they work?

i was most reassured to read in the manchester evening news, that a serving p.c, tarik mahood aged 30 has, despite being convicted of leaving the scene of a accident {in which a injured mother and child were left trapped in their car} having no insurance and then going to elaborate lengths to cover his tracks including respraying his car and trying to coherce his girlfreind into lying and stating she was the driver has retained his job (however a spokesmen for gmp has said his present duties will not include driving),words fail me Read more

And what are the pros and cons for both cars? Thanks for any advice PRM. Read more

Just read that the govt advise to motorists whose cars have been clamped by cowboy clampers can use the anti social law for recompense, my question is it true for traffic wardens can that be applied for them as well Read more

Agree - I think most PA's are decent people who have to routinely take the sort of 'road rage' abuse us motorists come across from time to time and find quite unacceptable. IMO the worst abusers are those who refuse to admit or acknowledge they've done wrong. You know, the sort who would park on a double yellow simply because they're selfish and/or lazy and then go ballistic when they get caught - conveniently ignoring the fact that THEY were in the wrong.

Of course there are good and bad PA's but that's true of every walk of life and I wouldn't be a PA for any amount of money so I'm happy to give credit to those who do because without them there'd be anarchy on our streets.
