Vectra or Omega? - prm
Probably one for DD this,I've currently got a '98 Vectra that i've had for nearly 4 years and its been faultless (yeh amazing i know) anyway i'm thinking of going for a new shape vectra or an Omega, but i've only got about £6000 to spend, also it has to be an auto, do the new vectras have a gearbox dipstick that i can check the level of oil with or are they sealed like the omega? And what are the pros and cons for both cars? Thanks for any advice PRM.

Er, no, not really, speaking as I find...

My brother and I have had seven Vauxhalls (four Vectras) since 1984, and none of them has given any trouble. I still really miss my 2000W Vectra GSi Estate. A fabulous, very underrated, car. Shame it was impossible to get sensible money insurance for my newly qualified driver wife when the lease expired last year. If it had been, we would have purchased it for her when my V70 2.4T arrived.

Back to the question. I really haven't warmed to the new Vectra, and you don't mention your annual mileage, but for six grand I would buy a top spec V6 auto Omega on which someone else has already taken a financial hit, and swan around in luxury.

No idea about oil dipsticks on the new Vectra.

Thanks SjB, each to their own i guess, but i do like the new shape, and after test driving one i was impressed with the comfort. But the v6 omega will be a bit juicy as i do about 26000 miles a year, so i'm looking at 1.8 or 2.0 litre, unfortunately diesel autos seem a bit pricey, unless they do a 2.2 dti on the omega.

I had written off the the new shape Vectra due to the horrible experiance in an SRi hire car on a juant from Edinburgh to Aberdeen, not one of the people in the car escaped getting a numb bum. I was very pleased to get into my 89R GLS vectra at the airport for the drive home... Given your post I guess the non SRi vairents have more compliant seats.. Still I think I will replace my Vectra with an Astra when the time comes( I'm not old enough to carry a Omega!)

Well I do 35K miles per year in my Omega 2.0 CD (manual box) and average 35 m.p.g. Wifey's V6 manages around 25 mpg around town, mid 30s on a run. I'm pretty sure there are 2.2 DTi models for all trim levels, but only on the facelift model, not sure if you can get one for 6k yet tho. (autotrader link to your left)

FWIW I'd go for an Omega; I think it handles nicely & is comfortable for a big bus, The ECTOEC engines are presumably no better or worse in the Vectra than the Omega ( idle speed control valve, leaking gaskets, yada yada)

Mine doesn't have a dipstick. The autogearbox is different to the older Vectra(B) and Cavalier gearboxes. No sport button anymore, but it still has the snowflake button for getting off slippery surfaces. Instead of the old traditional P,R,N,D,3,2,1 configuration, it's now just P,R,N,D. If you want to change gear manually, you slide the gearstick left and then it becomes a tiptronic type gearbox. You also get an LED display on the dash informing you what gear you're in. It's also a 5 speed gearbox, whereas the old one was only 4 speed.

It all depends on your driving requirements.

If you plough up and down a motorway and rate a comfortable seat as important, you'd probably be better off with the Omega.

If your driving is all around town, the Vectra might be a bit better.

As an utterly biased Omega lover, I would still go for the Omega. Bigger, hence better in a crash, better ride quality, VERY comfortable seats. Pleanty of poke from the 2.5 engine, with 31mpg, even after 101,000 miles.

The Omega is an old design whereas the Vectra C is pretty much all new. Also the Omega has now been discontinued. For residuals I would imagine the Vectra C will therefore be better.

I like my Vectra, IMO it's a handsome design that is well built. My only complaint is the stereo which does not display the volume level and also it doesn't have a "quickclere" windscreen - like the Mondeo it replaced.

When I drove the new Vectra, I couldn't get used to those fly by wire indicators! ... and I wasn't by the lack of rear vision when reversing - but perhaps it's just me.

I like my 2.5 Omega though - comfortable, a bit thirsty (24ish around town, 32 on a run) and lots of toys (my favourite is the fully integrated phone). Mines a manual though, cos that's what I prefer.

Another huge vote for the Omega, especially with an automatic box - all the toys, mine did 160,000 odd without an issue and was very comfortable, relaxed and quiet.

Its true that the residuals may be lower, but so is the cost of buying one.

I'd only get the vectra if I was living and doing most of my motoring in and around a town - a vectra's slightly smaller size might then be helpful. (actually, I'd still get the omega, I was trying to be rational)

I have an Omega B, and sometimes hite Vectra Cs, if I had a set sum of money, I would go for the Omega C over the Vectra C, it's just a better car, hence they cost twice as much new. Second hand, the Omega is a bargain. I would try a diesel automatic Omega, but try and avoid the basic spec ones.

Thanks for all your input BR's, I think i'll be down the auctions sniffing out some Omega's.
