Sorry if this question has been asked before (I've tried a forum search and come up with nowt).
When I start the afore-mentioned Vectra up from cold it makes a whirring noise that lasts for about 2 minutes. It sounds like a radiator fan, but it isn't the rad fan. I've had a couple of Vectra's and they both do/did this.
It's by no means a problem, but I'm just curious.

Sounds like the secondary air injection pump to me.
It just pumps air into the exhaust stream to help burn off rich mixture after startup - heating up the lambda sensor and cat more quickly.

IIRC it is a fan. Idea of it is to push exhaust gases into cat.
So it warms up faster. Which means the cat starts working quicker than it would normaly. ie. cuts down on pollution.
Anyone correct me if wrong??
