Maximum speed limits are all very well, but at the other end of the scale we ought to have minimum performance requirements ~ say 0-60mph in 10 seconds minimum. A lot of the frustation on single-carriageway roads is caused when the second vehicle in the queue just hasn't got the necessary acceleration to enable it to safely get past the slowcoach at the head of the queue. And anyone who is being closely followed by 4 or more vehicles at substantially less than the limit should be required to pull off the road until the road behind is clear of the tailback.

I was told recently by a friend whos boyfriend is a policeman that there is a law regarding slow moving vehicles holding up traffic. If there are more than 10 cars behind they have to pull over when safe to do so. I'm not sure what classes of vehicle this applies to though.

Hi,

My Omega 2.0 has had over the last 6 months overheating problems leading to new head gasket, radiator, water pump, thermostat x2, electric fan switch, hose split x 2.

I have since taken it to a different garage that was recommended to be told the temp prob is normal!!

If when parking I take the pressure cap off after about 1 minute the water bubbles up and flows out of the expansion task like a volcano!

The AA bloke did this and said it was because there was too much compression in the engine.

Could somebody please advise me what to do next here? Read more

the info you have had is spot on dont touch the cap till cooled down. they are designed to boil up that is why its called an expansion tank unless the needle on the temp guage is in the red dont worry the hose will have gone because it was perished probaly.
as regards pressure build up the expansion tank should have taken care of this you may need a new cap just check that the fan runs when the engine gets too hot let it tick over in front of a obstacle i e wall fence and see when the pump kicks in and position of your temp needle .
I think you are worrying needlesly

Just compare them with the bolts from the back wheels just to be sure you're not barking up some tree.

Changed insurer a little over a week ago but I've not had a proof of bonus from my old insurer yet. How long do these tend to take to come through? It's nearly a fortnight since I confirmed I wouldn't be going with that broker again due to price and was told they'd get this to me. I can't actually chase them up until Saturday anyway due to their opening hours, but I was wondering how long this normally takes and if I'm expecting too much to get it within a week or so.

Just hope Tesco are prepared to wait... Read more

Just to update this thread, am having one of those 'why me' moments at the moment. Phoned Tesco and they were more than happy to call my old company to get confirmation of NCD. I also mentioned they'd got the reg. no. wrong so the said they'd send out a new set of documentation and that I wasn't to return the old lot.

Just got a letter from them today, the old company say the policy is still in force so they want £230-odd more off me and are threatening to withdraw the policy completely as I've not yet returned the documentation.... (Not had the new lot yet)

Won't be able to phone the old lot to find out what is going on as they close at 5:20 so that'll have to wait until tomorrow.... Why am I doomed to have hassle with insurers? Even when I go with one that is generally accepted as being good I have trouble...

Hi all,

My Honda Prelude\'s odometer as suddenly stopped at 49999, which I found slightly odd. The rev and speed needles are working correctly but am not sure wheather this can be repaired, anyone know the possible causes??

Also, looking at buying newish used BMW privately and am looking for companies that provide warranties, tried the one on this site, but obviously want to shop around, any recommendations?

Thanks!

I thought, obviously wrongly, that is is every citzen's duty to try to prevent and/or report crime and that it was the duty of the police to apprehend alleged offenders, the CPS to decide on prosecution and the courts to try any cases arising.

How then does some poor soul get banned for a month and have to pay £364 costs for holding up a sign warning motorists of a speed trap? If this is the law of the land in 2004 then it is a pretty rotten land IMHO. The country is littered with the signs, why is his different? He was warning people of a trap so that they could reduce speed, if necssary; as a result people were not speeding, were not caught and were not fined. AAAH, now we have it, there is a financial motive in all this - "As any fule know" - to quote Molesworth. Read more

Just received this e-mail which looks as though it's done the rounds. Haven't got time or inclination to check CNN.

"For your information

All mobile users pay attention
If you receive a phone call and your mobile phone displays (ACE ) on the screen don't answer the call END THE CALL IMMEDIATELY If you answer the call, your phone will be infected by a virus. This virus will erase all IMEI and IMSI information from both your phone and your SIM card, which will make your phone unable to connect with the telephone network. You will have to buy a new phone. This information has been confirmed by both Motorola and Nokia. There are over 3 Million mobile phones being infected by this virus in USA now. You can also check this news in the CNN web site. "

The accelerator on my 406hdi is very stiff (firm is probably a better description)- I'm used to it, but everyone else (ie SWMBO)who drives it complains. I have tried jiggling with the adjuster and this seems to make it a little lighter for a short while but it is soon back to normal.

Am I missing a trick? Should I have it replaced (it looks & feels OK from under the bonnet) or is this typical of HDi's?

At least my right leg gets a good work-out each day!

Any advice appreciated. Read more

I had same stiff accelerator on my 406 hdi 90 2003. Assumed I needed a new cable after 220k miles but was wrong. It was just that it had stretched over time and I was pushing the peddle against the carpet. Pulled off the paper clip looking thing from the outer cable, took up the slack in the outer cable and refitted said clip. Instantly like driving a new car. Cheap fix too £0 and 5 minutes labour.

To quote from another thread, "about as much use as a pair of driving gloves". I've started using driving gloves:

* They prolong the life of leather steering wheels by stopping the rot caused by sweaty hands.

* They do provide a better grip on the steering wheel, whatever it is made of.

Perhaps I'm alone in finding them useful. Read more

I shall investigate in my local Halfords tomorrow
morning for said items. Hopefully not cheap PVC ones, suede
would fit the bill perfectly.

I believe that the relevant legislation is the Street Credibility Act of 1935, which requires that a gentleman driver may not wear suede gloves unless also attired in a camel-hair coat and a deerstalker hat

Also the temp gauge, reversing lights, coolant level lamp. The ECU lamp is on very faintly & so is the coolant temp warning lamp.

I've replaced the fuse that feeds these (No.12 (10A)) but as soon as ignition is switched on the fuse blows, sometimes it's ok until the engine actually first fires up.

On top of this I've having to get the radiator replaced due to a massive leak."Quality on wheels" NOT !

Cheers for any help.

I can now replace the fuse, and it may hold for a while, then suddenly blow.

The radiator has been replaced now. Had to take it back though as ,surprise suprise there was a leak on the bayonet connection and they didn't replace the rubber ring.

Radiator seems ok now, touching wood, well for 2-3years anyway.
Just out of curiosity where abouts is the coolant level sensor, temp sensor ?

If only I could get to the bottom of this poxy 10A fuse blowing.
Aaaaarrrhhhh !!!

Cheers
