Does anyone know how the petrol 1.6FSI 6 speed is geared? I presume that it's a close ratio set rather than a tall overdrive as in the TDI variants. I've not seen mph/1000 revs quoted for this model. Read more

What car test mentioned that sixth is a tall gear to improve economy and that it affected flexibility so that down changes may be required now and again.

Just bought a pug 106 from the auction- got it home and can not find the keypad number or any instructions for the keypad.
The car starts fine- the remote locking had a dead battery and i changed the battery- remote now works and car still starts without problem, but i will have a problem if something happens with the keypad and it comes back to life ??

Any advice on getting the keypad number ?
Any instructions on the keypad use ?

My friend is selling his 1994 Volvo V90 Estate for something newer. He is expecting to get £2500-3000 from it. Depreciation-wise it worked out to be £500 per annum. Which of the following would work out cheapest to run? Both of the following will be de-fleeted by end of month. Both are going to be £7000. He is looking to keep it until 10 year-old and then trade in for a newer one.

2001 Volvo V70 2.5S (170bhp) auto with 66k
2002 VW Passat Estate 2.8 4WD auto with 75k

Thanks, Gazza Read more

I can only say that the Volvo if looked after will do starship mileage: I had a 940 turbo which was bought with 164,000 on the clock and it went on for years. Little went wrong except usual tyres brake pads etc.

Have just bought my wife a 2001 Y Focus - car absolutely great apart from the rear tyres (which are presumably the car's originals on 23k miles). They appear to have little cracks around the edge - don't know whether they have been run under-inflated. Should I insist on some recompense for a new pair of back tyres .... or should I swallow it and buy them myself?

Any advice would be greatfully received!

My fwd car failed its MOT at 4 years old with cracking in the rear tyres where the wall meets the tread. Original Continental tyres with 4mm of tread left. Average miles (50k) for age.

Car has been through 2 sets of front tyres in that time, it was half way through the second set when I bought the car and the new tyres had been put on the front rather than swapping them over.

I am back to the backroom again and see that Volvoman is still here popping along...his topic about air-conditioning is interesting. I wondered if most people now consider conditioning essential; how important is it? How much would you pay extra to have said in a good car if it's still an option? Read more

Nonsense - I suspect he is probably overweight! Arthritis is caused by wear and tear of joints - not by the cold. The cold can make arthritic symptoms worse but doesn't cause them.

Well it's renewal time for both of us again.
Both over 50, rural northumberland, fully comp, protected no claims and legal cover.
Mine for a 2001 1600 civic with Axa comes at £294.
Wifes for a 2003 1600 civic with Axa comes at £284.
Just phoned the first insurance company by the name of Hastings Direct and they have quoted £195 and £169 for the same cover the only difference being £175 excess instead of £150 with Axa.
Should I be wary of this cheap quote and stick to more well known companies or should I go for the savings, plus I nearly forgot, we also ge a £25 Argos voucher each for being new customers!. So has anyone any comments about Hastings Direct good or bad to help me make a decision.
Regards Mal.

Darn I wanted to say something witty here but cannot think of anything. Roll on then, L&V.

My wifes 2000 X plate Xsara has basically been quite a good little card apart from the sporadic problems with airbag warning lights.

In the early days we had the front airbag light come on which was fixed by the dealer who re-seated a connector under the drivers seat. However after looking at various bulletin boards I found that this was a known fault, and the only way to cure it for sure was to hard-wire both under-seat connectors which I did, and the fault never re-occured.

Now (over a year later) I have the side airbag warning light coming on intermittantly. Does anyone know of this fault or how to fix it, or will I have to go to the 'stealership' this time ? Read more

David Horn

Are you sure it hasn't got side airbags? I'm sure mine has them as it has a passenger airbag also, and there's a warning sticker on the side of the seat. It doesn't actually say "Air Bag" as such there though. The control light for the side airbags on my Xsara also comes on when I switch in the ignition - which is the main reason I believe I have them!

Apologies if this has been already posted, but I got this rather interesting e-mail in my inbox today!

I think this could be worth a try.

We are going to hit close to 89p a litre by the summer.

Want petrol prices to come down? We need to take some intelligent, united action.
> >
> >Philip xxxxxxx offered this good idea:
This makes MUCH MORE SENSE than the "don't buy petrol on a certain day" campaign that was going around last April or May! The oil companies just laughed at that because they knew we wouldn't continue to hurt ourselves by refusing to buy petrol. It was more of an inconvenience to us than it was a problem for them.
> >
BUT, whoever thought of this idea, has come up with a plan that can really work. Please read it and join in!
Now that the oil companies and the OPEC nations have conditioned us to think that the cost of a litre is CHEAP at 77p -80p, we need to take aggressive action to teach them that BUYERS control the marketplace not sellers. With the price of petrol going up more each day, we consumers need to take action. The only way we are going to see the price of petrol come down is if we hit someone in the pocket by not purchasing their Petrol! And we can do that WITHOUT hurting ourselves.
> >
Here's the idea:
For the rest of this year, DON'T purchase ANY petrol from the two biggest oil companies (which now are one), ESSO and BP. If they are not selling any petrol, they will be inclined to reduce their prices. If they reduce their prices, the other companies will have to follow suit. But to have an impact, we need to reach literally millions of Esso and BP petrol buyers. It's really simple to do!! Now, don't whimp out on me at this point...keep reading and I'll explain how simple it is to reach millions of people!!
I am sending this note to a lot of people. If each of you send it to at least ten more (30 x 10 = 300)... and those 300 send it to at least ten more (300 x 10 = 3,000) ... and so on, by the time the message reaches the sixth generation of people, we will have reached over THREE MILLION consumers! If those three million get excited and pass this on to ten friends each, then 30 million people will have been contacted! If it goes one level further, you guessed it... ..
THREE HUNDRED MILLION PEOPLE!!! Again, all you have to do is send this to 10 people. That's all.(and not buy at ESSO/BP) How long would all that take? If each of us sends this email out to ten more people within One day of receipt, all 300 MILLION people could conceivably be contacted within the next 8 days!!! I'll bet you didn't think you and I had that much potential, did you! Acting together we can make a difference. If this makes sense to you, please pass this message on. PLEASE HOLD OUT UNTIL THEY LOWER THEIR PRICES TO THE 69p a LITRE RANGE
> >
> >Action:
> >It's easy to make this happen. Just forward this email, and buy your petrol at Shell, Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons (75p)Jet etc. i.e. boycott BP and Esso. Read more
