I have recently attempted to purchase a service manual for my Citroen Xantia 1.8si estate Vreg 2000?, and have been told that the Haynes manual only goes up to 1998 S reg. Does anyone know whether this manual will cover the engine/mechanics/suspension etc. for my car, or were there any modifications to the car after 1998 which mean the manual would not cover my car spec.

Kev,

The Xantia was face lifted in 1998, which is why the Haynes stops. It will more or less cover the car though, but you may need some ingenuity for getting body parts off, and watch out for extra things like airbags etc. Any manual is at best a guide as car makers are always tweaking models, even if there is no official 'facelift'.

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

Hi

I have seen similar wheels fitted to ka's and mondeos alike though depending on what the original diameter of the tyres etc are the speedo may be out of tune.

Question Citroen C3
Peter D

Just got back from a week down in Marbella. Collected a C3 1.6 from \"Record Rent a Car\" (£83 a week \"no excess\") and drove about 600Km in total. Liked the car but as a left hand drive I found the front door pillar a real problem on left hand bends up in the mountains. Impared vision I thought !! and kept leaning forward and looking round the post. Do UK RHD Drivers feel this is a problem on right corners ??. Regards Peter Read more

Yep but I never admitted it!

Hello all,
I would be obliged if anyone could help with my problem.I had my windscreen replaced over 2 years back and the rubber surround has not fitted the same since. It is now loose from both lower corners and along the bottom edge. The ends hardly meet in the middle where a plastic 'bridge' should hold them in place.Could anyone advise me what to use bearing in mind that the rubber surround may have to be removed in the future if I ever need a new windscreen.I have been warned to be careful putting anything on the windscreen as they can cause it to crack due to different expansion rates.
Much obliged, Martin. Read more

hi,
clear silicone sealant may do this sort of job, and it's not too bad to remove at a later date if required.

Question Rover 218 radio
laughingirl

Having problems bringing a Rover 218 (M reg) radio back to life after the battery was disconnected. Have tried following guidelines in the rover handbook, which suggested a "C" should be displayed but it was totally blank. Have also tried leaving it on for long journeys - any ideas?

I would agree with DL it may cost more than the radio is worth to correct the problem.Bearing in mind you can get a decent r/cassette very cheap now.I have seen them for about £40 but would be inclined to pay a bit more as radio reception on cheapo`s is not always great ie some are worse than the one you have.

I have a couple of cars that need the air-con serviced, could anyone recommend somewhere, or someone, that could do the job for a good price? Read more

I recently used AirCare Automotive ( www.air-care-automotive.co.uk ). They are based in Surrey but cover London. I was very happy with service.

My wife has ordered a new Toyota Corolla. We were supposed to pick it up tommorrow, but the garage has just phoned her to say it was not delivered to them and wont be with then till next Tuesday (available Wednesday).

I don't have a problem with this, but they have asked my wife to take the trade in to them tommorrow as normal and will supply a courtesy car. Is this a good idea or not? Read more

Glad it turned out ok, enjoy your new car.

My 1 litre Yaris has done over 4000 miles now, but a booming/resonance from the engine hasn't gone away as I was hoping it would once everything had bedded in.

It starts fairly quiet at 3000rpm, but then around 3500rpm suddenly gets really loud and doesn't go away until after 5000rpm. In 5th gear, it starts at 58, and gets loud at 67mph. At speeds below this I can hardly hear the engine.

Are they all like this, or is there something wrong with mine? The 3yr old one I test drove seemed quiet, but I wasn't able to try it over 60 and it was a higher spec so presumably had a bit extra engine/bulkhead soundproofing.

It seems to be a common thing on small cars, as the 1 litre bubble Micra I had previously did it at the same speeds (though higher revs due to the even shorter gearing), and my brother's 1.0 Uno and a friend's 96 1.4 Polo are similar though at different speeds. Read more

Thanks for all the responses.

I called in at the local dealer on Saturday and went out for a drive with one of the technicians. He seemed to think it was normal, but agreed that there was noise at certain revs.

So, one of the salesmen took me out in a 2nd hand 1 litre Yaris, which made exactly the same noise but it didn't start until around 4000rpm. He also though it was normal and said it was the variable valve timing switching over, though couldn't explain why it was starting earlier on mine.

They are going to check on some central database thing to see if they can find out anything and get back to me, but if that doesn't solve anything I'll have to take it back in for them to have a proper look at. Its definitely due to revs as it does it in all gears, so they should be able to prod around in the engine bay with the engine running and see if anything is loose.

The booming at 70mph is uncomfortably loud and would give you a headache after a few minutes, so I'm sure its not normal. If it started a few hundred rpm later it would be fine as then it would be above normal motorway speed.

Hope the admin won't mind me not putting a car in the title ! This is a general (although technical) question which could apply to any car ....

Have a 3.5 year old old shape Corolla, now at 125K, and have just spent £1K on a gearbox rebuild ..... so I'm going to amortise my investment and run the thing for a while longer !

What else, apart from the normal service items (oil, filters, tyres, etc) should I specifically pay attention to on a high mileage car ? Read more

blank

Not relevant to it being a "high" or not mileage car, but I would have the gearbox oil in your rebuilt gearbox changed after about 10k miles, once the new bits have rounded off a little.

Just had a go in a 1 year Audi A6 - impressions:
1. Just like the Passat inside, plastics no better quality
2. Drives just like the Passat
3. Can't see the point of the 2.5tdi (the one I was in) - the 1.9 130bhp tdi seems just as pockey (maybe slightly noiseir on startup)

Why pay all that extra, then ?!

Same applies to the Skoda Superb, I suppose

More importantly, can't understand why it's compared to the 5-series ... I had an older 5 series once ... far nicer car, both on interior and ride & handling .....

Anyone else any thoughts ? With the new Passat out soon, I should think the old one will become a bit of a bargain, s/h, by next year... Read more

My A4 (110TDI SE) faults in 30k miles (70k to 100k miles on clock - one prior owner FSH)
catalyst failed
air conditioning condenser failed
top hose detached after Audi service
timing belt tensioner failing at 100k after ostensible replacement at 60k miles
2 new front wishbones
when serviced, oil was left on undertray leaving a pool of oil on my garage floor (not a leak.. overspill from filter change)- not once but twice (Audi service)
Battery failed at 95k (4 years old)..

At the last I gave up. I could see a continuation of big bills.
