Yaris engine resonance - Salem
My 1 litre Yaris has done over 4000 miles now, but a booming/resonance from the engine hasn't gone away as I was hoping it would once everything had bedded in.

It starts fairly quiet at 3000rpm, but then around 3500rpm suddenly gets really loud and doesn't go away until after 5000rpm. In 5th gear, it starts at 58, and gets loud at 67mph. At speeds below this I can hardly hear the engine.

Are they all like this, or is there something wrong with mine? The 3yr old one I test drove seemed quiet, but I wasn't able to try it over 60 and it was a higher spec so presumably had a bit extra engine/bulkhead soundproofing.

It seems to be a common thing on small cars, as the 1 litre bubble Micra I had previously did it at the same speeds (though higher revs due to the even shorter gearing), and my brother's 1.0 Uno and a friend's 96 1.4 Polo are similar though at different speeds.

I have a 1.3 Yaris, 53 reg with 2500 miles on the clock.
No resonance or booming, is everything screwed down properly?.
Three of my friends also have Yaris' and no complaints.

We have a Sept 99 1.0 GLS and no resonance at all. How intrusive is it ? Is it RPM rather then speed related - if it's rev's then could be an exhaust/gasket issue, or even something loose ?

The only problem we have had in almost 5 years is one new water pump fitted in December - only £120 to do at dealers - wasn't off road at all, just noticed a rattle on tick over - have encountered this before on an old escort - dealer confirmed. These are totally reliable cars.

I have a 1.0 litre Yaris - fortunately, no booming or resonance. What did Toyota say?

Thanks for all the responses.

I called in at the local dealer on Saturday and went out for a drive with one of the technicians. He seemed to think it was normal, but agreed that there was noise at certain revs.

So, one of the salesmen took me out in a 2nd hand 1 litre Yaris, which made exactly the same noise but it didn't start until around 4000rpm. He also though it was normal and said it was the variable valve timing switching over, though couldn't explain why it was starting earlier on mine.

They are going to check on some central database thing to see if they can find out anything and get back to me, but if that doesn't solve anything I'll have to take it back in for them to have a proper look at. Its definitely due to revs as it does it in all gears, so they should be able to prod around in the engine bay with the engine running and see if anything is loose.

The booming at 70mph is uncomfortably loud and would give you a headache after a few minutes, so I'm sure its not normal. If it started a few hundred rpm later it would be fine as then it would be above normal motorway speed.
