I'm really busy today and I don't have time to think about this carefully.

Currently I have hidden the thread. Either one of the other Moderators will get to it this afternoon or I'll do it this evening; but I need time to consider the implications of the thread before I release it again.

Sorry.

Hello everyone.
I've had the very bad luck of severely damaging my motorcycle due to the unfriendly placing of a rather large pothole not far from where i live.
I'm about to complete the third party claim form from the council in question and was wondering if there is anyone who has been in a similar situation, what was the outcome, did you manage to prove neglegance, how long did the claim take?
The problem for me is writing the details in a way that forceably notes the council responsible for the damage.

Ah, so that's the answer. I'll arrange to have some more shipped out to you from Bournemouth this weekend. Pensioners that is.

The air con on my 2000 W reg Mark 2 Mondeo Zetec 2000cc had stopped working so recently, when it was in for a service, I asked them to have a look at it.

They regassed it and put some sort of dye in the gas, which they said would show up if there were any leaks. When I went to collect the car they told me the aircon was working very well, and they were right, too, it was putting out a nice icy-cool blast when the temperature was set to the minimum setting.

I was informed that only time would tell whether it would continue to work, would just have to give it a try.

It seemed to work for about a month but has now, unfortunately, stopped working again. I presume this is because all the gas has been lost, but that's only a guess. I have no way of testing it, and information on the repair and testing of aircon systems seems to be very lacking. Unusually even the Haynes manual just says "Take it to a dealer" which is rare for them; they usually give, at least some basic ideas and simple tests for various car systems, even those that are very complicated, as aircon systems obviously appear to be.

So, my question is, where do I go from here? Can one see the effects of this dye, if it's coming out of, for example, the compressor bearing? If so, how long will the dye remain there for?

I have heard that aircon systems can be horrendously expensive to repair, and, if this is so, do you think I would be justified in asking the dealer for an estimate to repair the aircon system before agreeing to go ahead, even if this estimate itself is chargeable, which I would well understand? I don't mind spending, say, a couple of hundred on it to get it fixed, it is useful in the summer (and even winter to demist the windows!) but, if it were to be much more than that, I would probably just forget it and make do with the fan. After all, this is the first car I've ever owned that's had aircon fitted.

I wonder whether there's anyone else on here who has had experience of getting Ford aircon repaired, as opposed to just regassed? If so, please could I ask what was done to effect a cure, and how much did it cost?

Many Thanks,

Aprilia is correct. Virtually all dealers now have the equipment, as well as many smaller places, even though they don't always advertise the fact. Most bodyshops also have the kit, as well as BT depots, Police depots, Ambulance depots, truck repairers, even the places that handle the ground support vehicles at airports. Admitadly some are lacking in skill, but that goes for any outfit.

Saffron Cars are selling UK sourced SL350s and SL500s at below list price. Does anybody know if these are genuine UK cars? I can understand internet brokers being able to source discounts on mass produced cars, but on these? Is there a catch? Read more

In fact just seen a 2003 LHD SL350 with 8K miles for 45,000. Good spec. as well.

hi, after a bit of advice. I\'m in the market for a cheap car and last night viewed a 120k vw golf 1.8 mk2. The car on the whole seemed very good, the only issue was that selecting 1st gear was sometimes very difficult/impossibe. All other gears were fine. So before I make a decision on whether to buy this car I what to establish if the problem is either gearbox or clutch. The latter is more preferable as I can just knock of some cash and have a new one fitted. The current owner said he\'d had that problem for over a year and it hadn\'t got any worse. I also noticed that there had not been a replacment clutch yet in the service history.
Any advice much appreciated as to what is the likely problem for this type of car at this age.

Thanks Read more

If the problem is only on the one gear it wont be clutch.probably syncro cone on that one gear-poss/selector but doubt that.maybe a change of oil may help?

Buying a new car soon and want to install a phone, hands free, voice activated, mutes radio when calls arrive and plays thru car speakers etc. Money no object. What do I tell the dealer or is it only a few luxury cars that can cope with this stuff. Was thinking of a BMW but I don't know enough about their system. Read more

OMEGA CDX 98 2.5V6 Estate

The inevitable - two central instrumentation bulbs (tacho + speedo) are now off.
Any suggestions on how to get at them to replace?

Has anyone tried different colours (permanant marker pen on the bulb glass?), or replacing bulbs with Green or blue LEDs?. (There'll need to be a 470ohm series resistor for each, and the dimmer circuit might not work if it's a straight in-line resistive dimmer unit).

Thanks Dave...I'll have a look at that.

THe Growler

Sorry folks: Growlette has managed to break her leg (no no not on her bike, she fell down the stairs and no no it wasn't after a surfeit of San Miguel). Guess who is doing the fetching and carrying (literally!) now?

She's Ok but will be hors de combat for a while. Crutches 10-12 weeks. A pity because she just completed her Foundation Safety Riding Course with flying colours and by the time she gets her cast off it will be rainy season so no riding. She wrote an enormously long *.txt file about it which she wanted to post here but I said really that's much too much for the BR and anyway not many of them are bikers. She really did well (she always does at anything) and Jake her instructor said she was the best student he'd ever had. That's my girl. 110% at everything, that's her.

Wouldn't be posting this except one or two people contacted us and said let us know how you get on with the course. I think it's a standard package internationally and by G's account it should be a must-do for all riders. I and she particularly liked the way it is aimed at women riders and their situation. Anyway if anyone wants the full Growlette debrief just PM me and I'll forward it. It's probably too long for the BR.

Thanks Moddies for your forebearance with this post.

Both congratulations and commiserations to Growlette. Really bad luck for her to have the accident just when she was ready to have some fun riding.

Looking forward to reading the report.

I'd like to find out about cars that are generaly unknown but are in fact exellent and under rated.

I'll kick it off by telling you about my recent purcahse of Mitsubishi Galant

S Reg 2,5 v6 ,climate control all leather and so forth. This is gem of a find for me. It wasn't expensive at £3500 (75,000 miles) and I think under valued. Some nice touches are both driver and pass seats are fully electric and it has a very decent climate control system as well as great music system.. all standard. It's quick and holds the road well and fairy economic for a v6 32 MPG average. Mine is a 4 door but the estate version looks great as well.

Any thoughts on this or other under valued cars you know of? Read more

Hi all,
I am going to have a rant and moan now which won\'t help anyone but myself.

Here goes. This is going to be really difficult to explain. I attend a University in the North West which I shan\'t name lest I get into trouble. Anyway - there are 2 entrances to the campus - one at the front and one at the back. When you drive into the front, you look for spaces which usually are non-existent and so, head to the back of the university campus by way of a short road about 10 metres in length. Problem. Drove in this morning and that short road had two barriers at the front campus side with a sign saying

\"NO ACCESS BETWEEN 0700 and 1730 - Please use *back entrance*\"

\"Hmm\" - I said - \"that\'s rather annoying.\" (I thought something a little stronger) So, late for a lecture which I was going to be early for originally I had to drive to the back entrance. The problem here is that the back entrance is 5 miles away by driving out of the main entrance and then taking the main road. So I drive in the back way and there are 2 more barriers on this side saying to use the front entrance but that didn\'t matter as I found a space.

I\'m sure there was a point to this sto.... oh yes. My problem is that a) I now have to drive 5 miles out of my way to go in the back way which isn\'t guaranteed to yield a space and b) Why have they done this? I understand the post is very confusing and long but there are no buildings or fire hydrants or anything on this small road. I can\'t for the life of me work out why they have done it. Finally, yes really, this is the end. Next year they are going to charge us to use the carpark. I have heard a figure of £6 a week. For students? I can\'t wait to see how much they actually get out of us.

Many thanks for your patience and should this post not be deleted for boredom reasons, thanks No Dosh, Mark or Dave for not deleting it :-)

I never realised I was so lucky but I HAVE to tell you this. Walking back to the car before and seeing as a new bulding is being constructed there is loads of site traffic. This dumpster pulls up needing to go through the barriers. One man come to operate it and I was surprised at what he had to to. He lifted the cover of and messed about inside. Then he couldn't do it so another one had to come and help him. All this went on for 10 minutes as when I was driving out (the long way of course) they were still messing about. I suspect that the people who have to come and open them will get fed up LONG before anyone else does.

I'm not childish but...HAH!!

Thanks for all of your replies
