My 2 yr old C5 1.9 HDI Hatchback, as developed very uneven wear on the rear tyres, the inside tread is worn down to nearly 1.6 mm but the outside tread is ok. My local franchise dealer says that it is caused by deformed rear axle(s) and is a known problem with C5s (yet another one !). They have applied to Citroen to relace the axle(s) under warranty and have also asked Citroen to cover the cost of replacement tyres.
Does anyone know about this problem ?

Following on from my earlier \'03 Polo flat battery problem.....
www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=12781&...f
the darn thing did the same agin on saturday - dead as a proverbial.
VW assistance guy managed to narrow it down to a .4 amp drain on the battery from the central locking circuit by removing the fuses one by one until the drain returned to normal .014 amp drain.
This must be an intermittant problem as it\'s been fine since May.
I\'m taking it in to the garage tomorrow but I\'d be grateful for any thoughts in the meantime.....

{I\'ve editied the subject header to something more appropriate that\'ll catch a reader\'s eye. \"Oops, it did it again\" is hardly likely to catch the eye of a VW enthuiast. More likely to catch the eye of a Britney Spears fan, if you ask me. DD} Read more
suggest that you disconect the alternater and see if you drain goes
alternaters can cause a drain though diodes/rectifier and your local recon shop should be able to test for drain useing amp leakage tester
Daft question maybe, but anything to liven January up. Question is related to a previous posting in which I referred to an as-yet-unexplained 'abnormal running mode' which I experienced in a diesel car.
I know that some stationary one-cylinder engines can be started backwards, but can a multi-cylinder diesel vehicle engine do likewise?

This reminds me of the "bubble car" I used to run years ago - a Messerschmitt three-wheeler. It had a Sachs 197 cc two-stroke engine with a Bosch Dynastart. To reverse you stopped the engine, turned the ignition key backwards and - hey presto - you now had four speeds in reverse! (It had a separate set of points for reverse.) >>
I had a German scooter called a Prior Viscount fitted with that very same engine, but the spoilsports who built it removed the reverse-run set of points! The engine sat so high in the frame that a recess was provided in the underside of the seat to house the spark plug -- hump-back bridges best avoided!
I am interested in hearing what type/grade of oil owners have found best. are they mineral based.semi/sinthetic etc.
my owners manual contradicts what the garage people are telling me.i look forward to your comments Read more
The fact that the oil is a "multigrade" has no bearing on whether or not its semi or fully synthetic or mineral based its merely a measure of its viscosity. Some small Renaults have oil change intervals of 20,000 miles. I dont think a yearly oil change in a finely engineered vehicle like a RAV-4 is a problem as you imply you are covering less than 15000 KMS per annum.
My wife who currently works for Inland Revenue is giving up her job to go into nursing. She will be a student for the next 3 years. Due to her losing her death - in -service benefit that comes with the job, I was looking to get a straight forward 3 year term insurance for her, over the net.
There are lots of sites available, but can anyone recommend a decent one , decent probably meaning cheapest in this case?
Also, will this affect our car insurance premium much, surely they would recognise her as being a mature student (36) and not a straight from school student? Read more
Thanks for your replies M.M and tdiist.
M.M - thinking of using them. Because the bike needs a new battery the corporate bank balance is no longer sufficient to make a bid for them. Curses!

My son who has just collected his 1996 N reg Punto has found the radio cassette does not function properly.
When turning the power on the radio plays but none of the related controls work. E.G cannot change stations, volume and tone contols do not work, station seeking buttons do not work-in fact all of them.It seems the radio is jammed/locked on one station. The cassette does play and fast forwards/rewinds but like the radio the volume and tone controls do not work.
The model is DC 349/64 according to the handbook.

I got a new face-off Goodmans CD stereo from Halford's last week in their sale for £50.
If that's too expensive, get a second hand tape one from ebay - they go for about £10, plus £7 postage...
I have a S reg VW Polo (98/99) 1.4 16v which keeps cutting out when slowing down from third gear to second. It usually happens when turning into roads and going round roundabouts and is proving to be quite dangerous.
I have taken it to my local VW dealership twice who cannot find anything wrong with it. I have had it nearly 3 years and has a full VW service history. This problem has been going on for about 6 months now.
Any ideas?! Read more
Hi jvp,
I have a 1.4 polo 97 and smae problem occured. slowing down at junction while changing gear at slow speed it would cut out. I had the fuel pump change ( 70quids ! ) but no success. Took it to my local back street garage and he found the big split on the rubber hose from the air filter housing. It cost about 8 quids from VW. They said it a well know problems . Since I changed it in November 03 , it never cut out again. before that it would cut out about 2-3 times in a journey of 20 miles. Hopes the info help.

For a couple of weeks now there's been an S-Type Jaguar parked in my street completely covered.
I don't blame the owner for wanting to keep the frost off but is it legal to hide the number plates and tax disc of a car parked on the public road? Read more
Expanding on PU's correct report:
Ignoring possible obstruction, then
If on a road subject to a speed limit other than 30 mph then the car should display front and rear position lamps and rear number plate illuminated during the hours of darkness. The cover provides no exemption.
If on a road subject to a 30 mph limit then it can park without lights (reflector required) providing it is not within 10 metres of a junction, or in a marked parking area or marked Layby either by signing or different road colour. If within the 10m of a junction then ,lights required as above. RV Lighting Regs.
As PU says Excise Licence must be displayed and Registration numbers must not be obscured all of the time.
If the cover over the car has that much over that it touches the road then one could consider without lawful authority, deposit anything whatsover on the Highway and in consequence a user is injured or ENDANGERED. Offence under Highways Act.
Council can, by notice, order anything deposited on a Highway that causes a nuisance to be removed forthwith. Highways Act.
But I would throw the sledgehammer away and approach the guy and nicely, neighbourly point out the problem he is causing of which he may not be aware of. You now have the law to rebut if he says he is doing nothing wrong and it may give an Insurance Company some ammunition to claw back any claim made of them if someone hits his vehicle whilst covered. Ways and Means Act.

Another off-the-wall one from the Land of Sun & Fun, if you can bear it.
Daughter, 21, will graduate this year and wants to go into textile design. This sounds a trifle flakey to me as a way of life so am trying to encourage her to pursue a backup option, desp[ite the fact she has so far excelled in her arts course. She was born in Bahrain, has travelled the world over, lived in the Gulf, Hong Kong, the Philippines, attended an independent school in Kent for her \"A\'s\" and for some unearthly reason has ended up in Tunbridge Wells, which is about as stimulating a lifestyle for a young person as walking around with one foot in a bucket of cement.
I want to offer her 3 choices of graduation present, and have got two nailed down:
1) a TEFL course (worldwide qualification, get a job anywhere, only a 4 week course and you can make good money in China/Korea/Japan/Thailand at it);
2) two return airfares for her and her b/f to do the one year Oz working holiday thing and perhaps settle there;
3) ????
Any ideas for Option 3? Mustn\'t be cash or anything convertible to cash, or a jolly, but something to aim for.
Been racking my brains all holidays.
Well, I did say it was off the wall....

Richard,
\"Not exactly. If you use an appliance which consumes 1000 watts, eg 1000 kJ / s,\"
Are you sure? not a \'k\' too much?
Of course having introduced 1 watt = 1 joule/second, we could always confuse Rebecca even further by telling her that houshold appliances are largly inductive and we have to consider the power factor.
Rebecca,
It is arithmetic. A 100 watt bulb burning for 10 hours consumes 1000 watts this is the equivalent of 1 unit of electricity costing approx 6 pence.

Closely related is the issue of tolls.
If tolls were to be charged at the rate of 10p per mile then that would work out at £3.50 per gallon on a 35 mpg vehicle.
Or 77p per litre.
Effectively doubling the price of petrol.
Please tell me my maths are wrong!
My C5 is 2.2Hdi on a 51 plate.
Absolutely no problems at the rear.
Definite alignment problems at the front caused by the speed hump type best described as "plastic pyramid".(Also affected my old Xantia when council installed them in my street.)
Tyre wear 45k rear; 30-40k front.
Now running on Viking (= Conti) tyres front & Marshall rears.
The tyres fitted when I bought the car were cheap brands, and definitely contributed to the balancing problems I had - along with a very large pothole in Belgium...
I have found the Viking network excellent for alignment, especially the gold/silver dealers.
