HJ,Ok I'll have a go. I think the first thing to do is check to see if you have a trojan on your PC. I take it you are running a good firewall and you are up to date with all the Microsoft security patches?
Go to this URL and download Spybot Search & destroy:
www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsd
Install it, and before you run it update the database.
Also go to this URL and get AdAware:
www.lavasoft.de/support/download/#free
Again install it, update it and run it.
Feel free to get back to me by email if you are still having problems.

Looking for some help on my wife\'s car. Have a \'99 Golf MK4 which recently developed problems with the boot lock - namely wouldn\'t open either with the key or central locking. Shortly afterwards the rear washer stopped working. After looking around this website I\'m inclined to think the washer tube has become detached and has been pouring water onto the lock so causing the problems.
Anyone got any ideas how I might:
1. Get the hatch door open?
2. Get the trim off the inside of the hatch.
3. How easy is it to fix the rear washer pipe back onto the joint where it goes into the base of the windscreen wiper.
I\'d hate to give in and take it to a garage....
thanks for any help / ideas..... Read more
Unrelated to the thread topic but related to Golf Mk4 (2dr 1.4S). Since new both doors leak when the car is left stationary in the rain. Rain collects on the sill under the door and spills over into the rear footwells. Is this a known VW Mk4 fault and how can it be rectified? Dealer only? Car is still under 3 yr warranty until March.
I have a 2000 model Vectra and i keep getting water in the near side of the boot space, the carpet lining on the floor is soaked and the carpet to the side is soaked at the bottom. I have removed the boot floor liner to dry out. On the nearside of the boot floor there is a plastic plug, i thought this was leaking, i sealed all around with silicone. Driving a day later in the wet and the nearside of my boot floor is swimming again, the boot seal has no damage at all and is sound.
Has anyone got any ideas where the water could be getting in my car ?

Im sure he fixed it back in 2004 and it's scraped now.
Can you advise?
Made a big mistake by putting 2 Litres of Unleaded Petrol in a Pug 405 Diesel.(non-turbo)
Having realised, I then immediately filled the car up with 44 Litres of the right Diesel.
Would this small mix cause serious damage to the car?
Many Thanks for your advice.

Hi there,
I did something very similar to this about 4 weeks ago. Hopefully my experiences will prove useful to someone?
I'd owned my 1996 Renault Laguna 2.2 diesel for around one year - then for some strange reason, picked up the wrong nozzle!? I wonder if it was because I was at a petrol station other than the one I usually use - I really don't know what happened - anyway, I put in 3.5 litres before realising my stupidity.
My tank was about 4/5 empty, so I immediatly changed over and continued filling with diesel, before driving home.
Straight away, I logged onto the internet and did a search - and there were so many conflicting recommendations. Hardly any of these were backed up with any experiences or hard facts.
So, since then, I have done about 2500 miles. I used pretty much the full tank of diesel before topping it up each time. I guess there are two schools of thought on whether you should continually top up, or use most of the fuel before topping up. I chose the second as by the time you put your second tank of clean diesel on top of the contaminated, you have diluted it to virtually nothing.
The first couple of tanks I nursed the car. Didn't go over about 1/4 throttle, didn't go over 65-70mph - just took it quietly, trying not to let things get too hot. There was nothing noticable in the way the car was running, still started and performed like it normally did.
2500 miles on and it's still fine! Hopefully I haven't done any damage, but then the cars only worth £1000 - I thought it was worth the risk.
As an indication, my tank is about 65 litres, so:
Tank 1: 3.5/65= 5.4%, Tank 2: ~1%, Tank 3: <0.1%
Hope this helps anyone in a similar situation!

In this thread you may ask any question for which you need help, advice, suggestions or whatever.
It does not need to be motoring related. In fact, in this thread it should not be.
No politics
No Speeding, speed cameras, traffic calming
No arguments or slanging matches
Nothing which I think is not following the spirit of the thread
Nothing that risks the future of this site (please see the small print for details www.honestjohn.co.uk/credits/index.htm )
Any of the above will be deleted. If the thread becomes difficult to maintain it will simply be removed.
However, as has been said a couple of times, there is a wealth of knowledge in here, much of which is not motoring related, but most of which is useful.
This is Volume 32. Previous Volumes will not be deleted,

Firstly try using a broadband speed checker such as
www.vantage.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/v2/v2.htm
this should give you some good amuntition. Run it when you experience problems to see what the rat eactually is. I regularly hit 550-600 kbs at all times of the day which falls within my tolerance level .
I suspect that the problem is not a contention issue. NTL raised their speeds from 128 and 512 to 150 and 600 which indicates that overall capacity is not a problem, if there is a particular issue in one location then they will have to raise the capacity to ensure that you can normally achieve the quoted speed.
The problem is much more likely to be a band width hog downloading huge videos or running a web server in their house.
Hi
has anybody got any experience of this ? I heard you can retain your stag manual gearbox and connect to Rover V8 via an adaptor plate, is that true or bunkum ? If true do you know where I get the plate from
If not anybody know any good breakers with Rover gearboxes including bellhousing ?? cheers

Stag has 5 main bearings - taken from Dolomite - but 2 of them are actually narrower to allow the extra conrods for the V8.
When I look at my Sprint and the Stag side by side this is evident....
I am currently in the market for a new Softroader and have narrowed the choice down to either a Honda CRV SE executive or a Nissan Xtrail 2.5 SVE. I still have to test drive both. Read more
Incedently according to Honda the CRV diesel won't be out till end of this year at the earliest and more likely around this time next year.
What is the typical lifetime of a diesel injector, before it needs replacing?
I would be interested to know what other diesel users have experienced.
I believe haynes suggest replacing at 80k for a pug 306.
Mines is on 127k and original injectors, and is running okay.
However, fuel consumption is slightly below average, but then again I do have a slightly heavy foot.

If the fast idle cable, where it goes through the lever on the pump, is slack when the engine is at normal operating temperature, then this is not your problem.
HI
What is the best lubricant to use on the striker and spring mechanisms on the boot and bonnet catches and locks. I have heard that wd40 contains water and can freeze if we have a cold spell..
thanks for any help

I am very keen on a trigger can of 10-40 semi synthetic for misc lubrication. So often the dealer use of spray-on grease does just that...sprays it *on* and none penetrates the moving pivot.

I now kow that a drive by wire throttle = no user control over how an engine behaves on startup, other than switching it off again if you are ready and quick enough (I wasn't).
1) Leave car for two weeks over Christmas and New Year
2) Let oil truly drain out to the sump and get thick and cold
3) Insert and turn ignition key
4) Observe engine fires absolutely instantly (ie before oil pressure establishes), and then revs hard to nearly 3,000 RPM for several seconds, before dropping to normal gentle idle
This has been a one off (so far!) but the tappet rattle was truly, truly, horrible until the hydraulic lifters pumped up, and I dread to think about piston and bore contact and a turbo running quickly up to boost speed.
I assume that the crank, journals, and other bearings would still have been nice and oily, but in the experience of those who know, is this brutal treatment likely to have damaged anything that will manifest in many miles time?

You could, in addition to the advice above, use Mailwasher to view messages on your ISP's server and delete (but NOT bounce) them from there.
I use mailwasher & rarely have spam etc in my inbox. I use Poco Mail as my email client and it has a useful "check messages on server" function which lets you check your impending messages waiting download. You can also delete unwanted stuff from the server using this tool.
