I thought it was time that I change the pollen filter in my car. Local parts shop have listing for 1.9 Dturbo but not for 2.0 HDI Dturbo and asked me to get a number from mine. Please where is it? I tried to seperate the intake box below the windscreen on the passenger side but the foam cover started to tear. Jetex list one under their numbering system but Bosch do not. Any help please? Thanks to you all-I shall stop looking. Anyway this is nothing compared to other problems with the car. All will be told in good time. Cheers, Paul.

Hello,

Has anyone any experience of fitting the Audi CD changer? I want to fit one on my 98 A4 - it has the concert stereo, and I am led to believe that the wiring for the multi changer is already installed through to the boot somewhere as it was a dealer fit option. Can anyone confirm this or has anyone done this and can tell me how easy / dificult a job it would be?

Thanks Read more

Fitting Kit sounds like a good idea - any rough idea of cost? also new carpet sounds expensive. I was looking at buying a second hand unit to keep costs to a minimum - The car has little value. I bought it at Auction a couple of years ago, but it now has 146K on it. I would like to change it, but as it has limited value and just keeps going (the only thing I have done is have it serviced and replaced tyres) it would seem silly to get rid of a good car.

You mentioned the extra part of the loom - what is that? The changers that I have looked at have a small amount of lead on the and a female connector - the car has enough cable to reach the changer and a male connector - am i missing something?

Happy new year everyone, hope this is in the correct forum but does anyone know how to identify the age of a Varta car battery type A7 part 536 046 030. The code embosed into the plastic top is G5B9710130186. Iam quessing that from this code a manufacturing date can be decoded. There is also a bar code 016487 102183 but this could easily be a shop code for point of sale.

My old Varta blue dynamic had the date on the bottom. I didn't look at the new Varta silver's bottom (a bit heavy to hold over my head!).

Intermittantly, when starting my A4 TDi, the engine starts then immediately stops. Eventually, after 4/5 goes, it will remain running.

I have tried all the keys (thus ruling out a transponder issue)

The car is fully serviced and is in a standard condition.

Has anyone any ideas?

The original problem sounds like the transponder pick up. Yours sounds like a different problem.

What miles, when serviced, belt changed etc ? Have you had it on the diagnostics ? Does the glow plug light come on and go off ok ?

Hi,

My wife has owned her Citroen Xsara from new (Jan 2000) Been serviced once a year and never missed a beat.

About 5 weeks ago the car was parked up for a couple of days (Hard frosts). Tried to start the car. The engine spun (I think more slowly) the dials went mad (Tacho meter went up to red line and back before engine started) and then when it did fire the engine imediatly died.

Managed to get going by giving it some throttle and reving it.

Went in for sercice. Asked to check Battery and Alternator and told all OK.

Fine since but has been parked up all week with the cold weather and same thing happened today. It did start after 20 goes!

I was wondering if the battery is weak under cold weather and once it gets going it quickly charges, or could it be cold start mechinism.

Every time its been cold and left for more than a couple of days.

Any ideas greatly received?

Cheers

Thanks for that!

My instinct is its battery as well. I will wait for the next cold snap and see what happens. Garage ensures me that its OK.

Cheers.

Out of town shopping centres were built because there was demand for them, not because HMG said so. Most have perfectly adequate bus links to local areas at least, and if people choose to use their cars to get there that's fine, because they're out of town and congestion rarely becomes an issue.

I don't accept the universal "delays, discomfort and high cost" of rail travel. I can either take the car and have a relatively stressful 30-minute journey to work or take the train and get there in the same time, with the option of reading the paper or doing some work (no, not really) on the way. The cost is about the same for the journey, plus I'd have to pay an extra £5 or so to park the car, or walk for about 15 minutes from nearest free parking. Local station has a well-lit, CCTV-monitored car park - costs £1.50 a day, which is refunded against your train ticket.

Difference is, in rush hour the car option can take about an hour or more, but the train is still 30 minutes.....

It's not just the size of the fine, but the chances of being caught. I have had research quoted to me that said increasing fines would not make people any less likely to commit given offences - to which I asked if they had researched the effect of being 10 times as likely to be caught.

Petrol subsidies would be no less fair than regional variations at the moment - e.g. from 72.9 to 91.9 in different areas - if gradual. If people were so desperate to get the subsidy, they could always go to the subsidised area.

I was a debt collector in the late 70s/early 80s for a company who specialised in lending £5 - £50 to people who couldn't afford it and then lending them more money to pay for the original loan.

Many is the time it took two of us; with one in the car keeping the engine running and the passenger door open ready!

escort man

Hi,
just wanted an opinion....

i drive a 92 1.4 escort, with the CVH engine. Since getting it reconditioned a while ago ive been using 5W30 semi synth oil as recommended in the Haynes manual(and on this site!).
Ive started noticing the level has been slowely dropping (not seriously - just enough to need topping up every month or so...)

i cant see any obvious leeks (oil filter, sump plug, seals etc) so am assuming its burning a bit - i do a lot of motorway driving - M25s constant slowing and accelerating, and M3 rolling hills - and i admit to driving hard and fast (no reprimands please)

Getting to the point, as thw 5W30 is a thin oil at the best of times, would upgrading to a 40 weight oil (hot temp) stop the oil buring off quite so much - as its thicker and may not seep past slighlty worn pistin rings/valves etc quite so easily..
Ideally id like to keep the 5w for the quick circulation at startup - CVH has hydraulic tappets.
This means getting a 5w40 oil which i can only find in fully synthetic form - and ive been told that synthetic oil and CVH engines do not mix well. Is this true and am i going to do any serious damage to the engine by using such am oil.

Many thanks,
Dave

Before Ford went to a 'blanket' 5w/30, 10w/30 was the recommended brew. Find a good quality one, I use Texaco but I understand it is difficult to get from their filling stations, a good quality mineral is perfectly adequate but I wouldnt advocate using a full synth as it will burn it even faster!

Looking at the engine I have oil leaking out about half way down the block on left sideand it is now covering the alternator mounting bracket. It is not coming from the rocker cover.
Will this be a simple job or a garage one? Read more

Steve, The 1.5 diesel 106 engine leaks exactly as you describe if filled to the top mark on the dipstick. It seems that dear old PSA increased the oil volume in this engine without making any other changes in the pursuit of their ludicrously long service intervals. My car is oil tight (80k miles) when filled to 3/4 distance between lower and upper marks, and uses virtually no oil.

I would suggest this could also apply to the petrol 1.4. Try lowering the oil level before you take any further action, as PSA engines are generally very good (the rest of the car rather less so).
