Hi,
Well I bought the A registered 1.6 golf - got it quite a bit cheaper in the end then the dealer originally said - but I reckon he is still laughing! (For anybody who read my earlier posting)
I got it delivered yesterday and had my first chance to have a really good look at it. Noticed a few things, but mainly that my Warm Air Deflector plate was no more. It has just disappeared. I have the Air Hose going from the Air Cleaner Vacuum Unit just hanging in thin air! I have looked into how much they cost (£2.22 from GSF), but can't for the life of me work out where it is supposed to go on the manifold. Can anyone shed any light?
Also I need to adjust the clutch which is currently engaging right at the top of the pedal. I have found the clutch manual adjustment section in Haynes, but this is where I start to get a bit confused. It says that I am supposed unscrew the outer sleeve bolt and then turn the serrated disc, push the clutch a few times and tighten up the bolt again.
When I look at it from above I have the clutch cable going into a white plastic sleeve above the gear box, which has a bolt coming from it and going into the white serrated disc. I presume this is the bolt that I am supposed to undo? I have tried loosening it, but just worried that something will go ping, can somebody please confirm that I am doing the correct thing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
I have a 1984 1.6 GL, I believe the gearbox is a 020.
Thanks
Stu

Welshy,
If you're on a budget but want a major established brand get Firestone F-700's. They do not seem to have any really bad traits.
Look at the Kwite High prices by all means but then go to a smaller independent for a deal.
Just as an example the popular, smallish tyre for a ZX TD is £17 more per tyre (for the Firestone) on that link than I'm getting them fitted for currently.

My husbands Vauxhall a complete nightmare. It has chugged before misfiring and it turned out to be a cracked valve. We had it replaced and all the other pressures checked, it was fine for a while.
Last night I was driving it and it stalled. I know female driver and all that, however it wouldn\'t restart. Kept turning almost like it had no petrol but it wouldn\'t start.
I had to call out the breakdown who said it was a HT lead, although it had new ones recently. He also lowered the tick over.
It seems ok but I\'m not convinced any ideas? Read more
Its a 1.8 litre has fuel injectors. Its 1991. Are these relays easy to replace?
hi all,
i recently had my oil cooler replaced which stopped oil mixing with water in the tank, plus changed radiator unit (which included a transmission oil cooler) cost approx £400 incl labour. now the car developed a curious problem, automatic gearbox works fine when cold, after 5 miles or so, 1st gear develops a problem, becomes sticky, and need to push it down for 3 seconds before it responds, other gear changes seem ok. thing is though if i switch the engine off and back on then problem goes away for a nother 6 miles or so.
i am worried that gearbox on its way out. whcih will be mega expensive to change.
would anyone please shed some light on this problem
many thanx in anticipation

I'm interested in getting an X3 and was quite surprised to hear from my local dealer that the earliest delivery was probably end 2004 / early 2005.
I got in touch with a broker who claims that he can get a car (sourced from a UK dealership) unregistered and at the list price delivered a lot closer to the launch date of May 2004.
Now I'm a little surprised that he is selling what appears to be a high demand car, for the list price and so close to the launch date.
Do I smell a rat or are there legit UK brokers doing business with UK BMW dealers and able to source these desirable cars at a discount?
Cheers!

Good point. This particular broker is not looking for a deposit but obviously requires full payment before delivery. He could then turn around and say that delivery has been delayed.
Anybody out there have experience of buying a high demand car through a broker? Have they delivered when promised? The same broker has a UK sourced 3.0i Z4 for immediate delivery which he is again selling at list price. I thought Z4's were going for a premium?
Has any one here taken part in, or would consider taking part in car sharing?
I do IT contract work and at my current place of work (Tameside MBC) and last place of work (Bolton MBC) there is a car sharing scheme. Infact, all 10 of Manchesters local authorities are taking part in it.
In any case, I just signed up to it, as someone offering a lift, to do my bit to ease congestion.

What tales do any of you have to tell?

No experience of car sharing at all, but pleased to see the web site
(It featured in an article on Ceefax last Saturday week, and on Teletext the day after, and has appeared again today. The articles specifically refered to it being an online or web based scheme, without bothering to mention the web address....)
Bora - what Bora ?
Got a new tyre for my Peugeot 306 XSi about an hour ago. Asked the bloke how much to check the tracking.
\"Free check sir\"
\"OK, could you check it then please?\"
Checks it.
\"Oh that\'s a mile out sir. No problem, it can be sorted, but that\'s £16.99 plus VAT\".
EVERY TIME i get a free tracking check, something needs adjusting. It was only checked and adjusted about 6 months ago. My wife drives the car most of the time, and it\'s quite possible she\'s kerbed it at some point. It\'s equally possible I have done the same, and forgotten about it. But is the suspension set up that sensitive that every single time i get a tracking check, something needs adjusting? Or am i being a cynical, suspicious, miserable pink fluffy dice? Read more
I was just wondering if you could put me straight about what are the actual symptoms of the tracking being misaligned? I have just replaced a couple of front tyres which had wearing towards the inside of the tread. I am a little concerned that this is going to show up again fairly soon. Is this something to do with the tracking, or is it the suspension, or what else could it be???
I seem to remember that a few years ago it was mentioned that the latest car type engine oils, SJ etc, were not suitable for use with modern motorcycles. I want oil suitable for a current R series BMW motorcycle which is air and oil cooled.
Any comments? Read more
Reggie, my workshop manual says an oil grade of SE or higher and do not use oils with 'energy conserving' graded CD or higher.
The little example diagram shows somwthing like SAE 10W-30 SH/CD - where the CD is the energy conserving bit. There are or course many opinions about this and why should Mobil 1 for bikes cost more than normal car Mobil 1 if it has 'less' in it ??
My local bike discount store warns of dire consequences of putting car oil in 'thumper' I say its only in there for 2000 miles and can't even get warm in that time!

A Lot of Satnav systems in cars also have a TV built in. Does this require a TV license? Read more
Having driven (not owned !) BMWs and Mercedes´with the TV function fitted I do find it silly that the thing switches off when you start moving - have people never considered passengers. Even a Lexus has to be stationary to program the - sat-nav.
Is there an active after-market enabling owners to override the rules and use them ?
During the summer I went to a car boot sale in the countryside, about 100 miles from home. When we returned to the car (X-reg Vauxhall Astra 1.6 8valve), I discovered I had lost my keys. Naively, I thought a call to my breakdown service would quickly sort this out. In a sense, it would in that they could indeed recover me and my car to my home or to a Vauxhall dealer. The problem was that the car was locked with the handbrake on, so they couldn\'t simply put it on a spectacle lift and drive away. They would have to crane it onto a lorry and I would have to pay for this. It soon became obvious that I would have to accept an alternative - a locksmith would come, pick the door lock and re-program the car\'s electronics to accept an ignition key that he would provide. Apart from not having my spare key, I didn\'t have my car pass information with me either i.e. No number to program the new key. A phone call to a neighbour with a key to my house, however, sorted that out. When he arrived, the locksmith took about half an hour and I was on my way - £125 poorer, with a new key which did the business but which lacked a remote door opening facility. Later on I discovered that my original spare key would open the doors and start the engine, but the engine would cut out after a few seconds. I therefore had to pay Vauxhall £30 to reprogram that key to do the full works. I again have 2 keys, but only one has a remote opening facility.
This post is not a complaint. I\'m impressed with the security - the locksmith told me that most modern cars are now almost impossible to steal. I\'m just saying:
- Don\'t lose your keys
- If you don\'t carry a spare key, at least have your Car Pass with you
- Tell me how to hide a spare key on the car!

Keep it up Growler, if you will pardon the expression!
Update: Doh! Actually, they're not screws, but nuts that fasten to underlying bolts extending from the manifold itself. Not sure if these have been removed on yours, or if the manifold isn't the original?..
