Just wondered if anybody in the B.R. now owns or has any connections with Jowett Javelin/Jupiter cars, which were well ahead of their peers when introduced in 1947. I rebuilt one back in the early sixties, but with family commitments reluctantly had to sell it on.
I believe they were the first company ever to use hydraulic tappets, which are now standard throughout the motor industry.
They also were one of very few manufacturers in their day to employ torsion bar suspension both front and rear, which gave almost Citreon DS19 ride quality.
Incidentally the Jupiter won its class at Le Mans in 1953/54, shortly after which production ceased as Briggs Body Works were bought out by Ford, who cut off their supply to Jowett. Read more
I have noticed a new characteristic develop on my 98R 306D, and could do with some help in finding the problem. It has only started recently (since a service by myself), and only seems to occur if you start the car between half an hour and 2 hours of turning the car off, only if the car was hot (over 80 degrees C) - A typical example of this temperature would be stopping at a motorway service station. The car starts and idles at the correct speed for 2 seconds, then the idle climbs to between 1500 and 2000 for a few seconds and then returns to normal. It doesn?t happen when it?s cold, or when it?s warm ? only hot. Any ideas ?
Initially after the service, the car would cold start normally, idle for 1 second and then stall. It would then start immediately afterwards. I thought this could be air in the system, so re-fitted the fuel filter and bled the system, and this problem hasn?t occurred since (just thought I?d include this in case it?s related).

I just changed the filter bowl. I didnt go near the idle control mechanism.

I have an S Reg BMW 318iSE which has done 78000 miles and twice in the space of a 1.5 years the car has broken down with cooling system problems. The first time the thermostat failed which caused the expansion tank to crack. Last week the water pump bearings went causing damage to the fan belt and pulley.
Has anyone else had similar cooling system problems( according to Which this is a problem area)?
I love my car, but my reaction now is to look for a newer and more reliable car because I am worried about other potential future problems which may result from these two failures, such a cylinder head gasket problems. Any advice from anyone would be appreciated.
I bought the car 5 years ago from nearly new because I wanted a reliable car which would soak up high mileage. The car has been regularly maintained but I have been disappointed by the minor (windscreen wiper relay, heater relay, air con sensor) and major (cooling system failures) problems I have had with it and also the fact that it is quite an oil burner (as all the BMW garages I've been to have told me its designed to do). Its not really what I expected from a BMW. Of all the cars I have had, it has been the most troublesome. I once had a Peugeot 106 which did 90000 miles and I had no problems at all.
Has anyone else had troublesome experiences with Beemers.
Cheers
Marty

Hi,
My sister recently bought a W Reg 2000 car from a garage (not a franchised dealer, but a privately owned one).
She has had the car for a couple of weeks now, but this morning she got a letter through saying that the previous owners cheque had bounced in payment for the tax disc and that we must send the tax disc back with immediate effect.
Meaning that she has to pull out for 12 months tax when 10 months was supposed to be included.
How does she stand legally? are the garage legally obliged to pay for this? as the car was sold with 10 months tax and in effect she hasnt got that now, also the car was effectively sold without any tax and that is illegal is it not?
Any ideas as to what her rights are?
Thanks
Keith

Hi,
It is correct that it was the previous owner who paid for the disc.
The garage\'s name was not on the V5
She got the tax disc this morning (and she hasnt driven the car since she was notified up until the time we got the new disc)
We spoke to trading standards just to confirm our position and they agreed that 10 months of the cost of the 12 months should be refunded by the garage. So I will give them a ring today/tommorow to gauge their response.
Thanks all
I read that M1 stands for "mid-engine car, first type". But that was BMW's only mid-engine production car. Now they say the M in M3 and M5 stands for "motorsport". What is the deal? Did they just change what it means after the M1 because they didn't want to make anymore mid-engine cars? Read more
Mental, Menace or Madness perhaps? How about Manhood? However, I think Muppet about sums it up - well it does round here anyway!

Hi,
Wife has a 99T 306 1.6, on cold startup (only) theres a very pronounced tappety/injector noise, atleast on tickover sounds like it's making the noise quite a few times per second.
Oil is decent level, not long till replacement time but as it's definately worse when cold and it's getting towards winter thought i'd ask the Q.
cheers for any help. Dave. Read more
cheers for the suggestions adam, i'll give it a go.
I have a VW golf 1300 Mk2.
I am in the process of changing my timing belt.
The water pump is used to tension the timing belt. I have loosened the three bolts holding it to the engine but the water pump will not turn around to reduce the tension.
I have used a screwdriver as standard. Is this problem common and how do I rectify it? Read more
1 - A big hammer and a drift usually work!
2 - Yes, you will need to remove the sprocket in order to remove the backplate.

It's simply how the database behind the site will work. One table will have your user details and has a unique "key" (the member ID). This is then used everywhere else as the unique reference to you. When the forum renders a web page, it does some table joins to find the username.
So back in 2003 it looked about AE's name and would have been Renault Family. The webpage when rendered today in realtime finds a username of Altea Ego when his name is looked up. Pretty simple really.
Remember the forum like any modern website is rendering pages based on dynamic content in databases etc. Change the data and the webpage will then be different when viewed again.
Now unless Reggie comes back lets leave this old thread.

I got to the road and discovered the house but sadly the lady had moved and the new owner has built a shiney new garage over the plot. A couple of Jags and a bentley were pulled out but no information on the Jowett or Beetles I'm afraid.
Thanks for your help.
