Has anybody heard of these failing causing the autoboxes to go into low gear and causing the back end to lock up? Friend of mine was doing 70mph on motorway when this happened and caused the car to slide out and hit the central reservation hard, and wrote the car off. Apparently MBUK have accepted 'partial liability' from what he tells me. The dealer who did the post-accident inspection said they've heard of this happening before. I think it was a 99T E-300td? You may get a beter response if you post in either of the following forums:

they are both mercedes specific interest sites.

Similar thing happened to my old Allagro - except on that I couldn't get 1st or 2nd. It was the rubber mounts that hold the gearstick to the floor - or rather one of the two didn't, if you get my drift. Not sure if the Metro has a similar layout or not. How loose if the gearstick?

Question Peugeot 1.9 Tdi

I am after some advice on behalf of a mate - his head gasket has gone on his 1.9SDlt 306 sedan - M reg. I have looked at the oil and it seems ok, though there is evidence of coolant running down the block, it looks like it has come from the head gasket just behind the fuel pump/govenor thingy.

Any advice on how much this will cost to replace, will it be throwing money away?

Thanks in advance,

Mike. Read more

Mike,

I think the pipe comes off a stub on the very end of the timing belt (LH as you look it) end of the head. I think on the modern units, a small bore hose runs up to Tee piece with a bleed nipple on it located over the engine mount. I think on my old BX it ran to a cold start device on the injection pump. Still if you look down the back of the injection pump it should be obvious.

These engines normally leak oil all down the back of the engine, or around the joint at the timing belt end if the HG is dicky. There's a first time for every symptom though....

Is it illogical? It must be Citroen....

I currently have a 1.4RT Clio, with body damage, and missing wing mirror, on an L '93 reg, 78500 miles.
I have been offered an M '95 same model, 71000 miles, with the bonus of PAS and FSH, £750.
Is this small upgrade worth it, or should I save up for a newer car? Read more

If you are hard up, like the colour, want the extras and would feel better without the damage, go for it. Otherwise spend a bit more and get one a couple of years younger. There are lots out there so you can pick and choose.

About 5000 miles ago I towed my caravan for about 30 miles at about 60mph. When I stopped for petrol I noticed a slight blue smoke coming out of radiator grill. Upon looking under bonnet I could see about one teaspoon of engine oil on tray beneath cooling fan.

I wiped this up and the problem has not recurred despite towing the caravan.

Oil consumption since this time has been about half a litre over 5000 miles.

Today I removed spark plug cover from the plug nearest front on LH side. The plug recess was full of engine oil, the plug was totally immersed in oil from top to bottom.

The other two plugs on the left viewed from the front were the same. I have not checked the three on the other side.

Even with three plugs totally covered by oil the car ran perfectly.

No oil has dripped onto the floor. I have now cleaned the oil out of the three plug recesses and will see if it comes back.

Does anyone have any advice please ?

Thank you for your reply. I need to get this fixed quickly now and my local friendly garage is busy for a few days. Reluctantly I have booked it into a Vauxhall main dealer tomorrow. They insist on fitting new covers at a total of £299.00 + VAT.

Financially painfull but at least I can tow my Caravan again for next weeks holiday.

Thanks again.

Is is really difficult to shift used cars for sensible money now? Or a price guides like Parker's and especially the WhatCar? price guide incorrect?

E.g. colleague tries to sell vgc car for £3500, £750 less than Parker's private sale price ends up having to take £3000 to get it shifted.

Friend of a friend has a used supermini worth £2500 in a private sale according to Parker's, no takers even at £1750!

I guess people want a new or newer car and with interest rates so low just now can afford the payments on a new car so no interest in any used car over 3 years old.... Read more

an item, car or otherwise, is worth what somebody will pay for it. You can ask what you like for it, but the pile of notes you get when the deal is done is the value.

How many people have lost sight of that simple truth? Looking in Autotrader and the like will tell you what people are asking, but do you know what people are paying?

A better idea may be to see which cars stick for 4 weeks and assume they are either (a) held together with Wrigley's or (b) overpriced. Of course, it could be a bit of both....

When pricing your car, ask yourself if you want to sell it and buy a new car or just advertise it and see the car you want slip away for the sake of £100.

Can somebody PLEASE easy my befuddled brain.

There are approximately 1 million variations of the 911. What is the difference between a C2 and a Turbo, a C4 and a C2S etc etc.
I know that both the C4 and Turbo 4 have 4 wheel drive but other than that I am lost.

I'm looking for BHP output for each variation as well as 2/4 wheel drive. From 993s through 996s.

Please please help. The more I try and work it out, the more confused I get.

Thanks in advance.

I have a VW Golf 1300 Ryder Mk2 1991.

With regard to fitting a new timing belt, I will probably have to remove the crankshaft pulley/sprocket.

After I have turned the engine to get the TDC marks aligned I will then have to remove the crankshaft pulley/sprocket bolt.

Will selecting a gear be enough to hold the crankshaft in place so that I can remove this crankshaft pulley/sprocket bolt?

Any suggestions will be welcome. Read more

You need to fit the timing belt around the crankshaft sprocket, so don't take it off!

On the 1.3 engine, loosen the three bolts holding the water pump on (10mm socket), then lever with a screwdriver to obtain correct belt tension.

Use the end of the VW wheelbolt wrench (screwdriver removed!) on the end of a 6mm allem key to crack the 4 allen bolts holding the crankshaft pulley on.

on qvc today i saw a device called pilot green advertised. this it is claimed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 15% by using a device attached around the fuel line containing a magnet. does anyone have any experience of this or can it be too good to be true! Read more

I would be grateful if someone could confirm that a 2000 model crv has a cam belt rather than a chain? Also, cbcb has doesn't have much that is bad to say about the crv, I'd appreciate any comments while considering buying a 3 yr old crv.
thanks.

Adam Going (Tune-Up)

According to my information (Autodata) CRV is definitely a belt, with an advised renewal interval of 72K or 8 yrs, whichever is the sooner. No special tools listed, but they give "remove & install" as 2.3 hours, and in my experience they usually under-estimate on Hondas, so reckon on 3 hours.

Lack of comment in cbcb is probably a true reflection of their reliability. I have only ever seen CRVs for routine servicing, and would regard reliability as typically Honda - too b....y good !
