Hi,
The climate control on my Seat Leon (03) TDi packed up last night (on the hottest day of the year!), it no longer blows any cold air.
I will do the obvious and check for a blown fuse, broken compressor belt or any sign of leakage.
The reason for this post is that I seem to remember that there is a way to access a "secret" menu on the climate control panel on VW group cars. Does anyone know how to do this? Will it tell me anything useful (a fault code for example).
Thanks in advance.

i was hoping that this would help me solve my Octavia problem, but realised that the system is probably different.

I have Climatronic in my Octavia TDi SLX, the display unit of which i have seen in VW Passats and Ford Galaxies. I can get no cold air over than fresh air. I have checked the relay, and that is ok. I haven't got a clue where the compressor is to check the belt.

Does anyone know how to access the diagnostics for this system? Like one-eyed-king, i'd like to be a bit clued up before i visit a specialist.

Thanks

Question clio rear brake
eddys buck

I have an H reg clio and I can\'t get the rear hub off it to change the shoes. I have taken the hub nut off, but the hub won\'t come off. I\'ve tried to prise it off but the bearings look like they will break. There must be an easy way to get it off.
Can anyone help?

Hi,
The airbag/pretensioner warning light on my Astra came on shortly after sliding the passenger seat all the way forward and tilting the seatback all the way back (to carry a big load before anyone starts getting other thoughts).
My local Vauxhall dealer diagnosed a pretensioner fault and want £200 to replace it. This seemed a bit steep for what I suspect was just a wiring fault. So I took the car back and I have had the seat out and checked all of the connections.

My question is, will light go out automatically when the fault is rectified or does it need the dealer to reset it?

I phoned another Vauxhall dealer who said it should go out by itself but this seems to conflict with answers to other similar questions in this forum.

My local Vauxhall Spares/Breakers have quoted £55 for second hand pretensioner but I don't want to buy this unless there really is a fault and there doesn't seem to be any way of finding out without paying a dealer to run the diagnostic and the second dealer has quoted £60-£80 to do that! I don't know what year it is, but on the buckle anchorage of a Vauxxhall with pretensioners, there is usually a slot on the side, from which a orange plastic 'alert' tag pops out about 4cm if the pretensioner has deployed (the tag is not visible if not deployed) if not deployed, the fault is more likely to be a wire or something.

I can email you pics of a deployed and undeployed buckle if you like, just msh me at krustycola@yahoo.com

I've been told that my clutch is getting heavy and will need replacing. What are the causes of this? It's a 1.3 and done 61000mls. The gears are a bit grapply and there is a noise on depressing and releasing the clutch pedal which is quite stiff.
Will I need a completely new clutch? Read more

From reading the threads, it sounds like the release bearing is definitely on its last legs. You should change the whole unit if you decide to go ahead as, if the bearing is worn, then chances are the whole thing is nearing the end of its life. Most motor factors (eg 'German & Swedish') will supply a complete clutch for under £120.00.
One of the reasons why Golf clutches go very heavy as they wear is to do with the geometry of the actuation lever. As the clutch wears and the bite point moves, the movement of the release lever on the clutch housing becomes far from ideal in relation to the cable locator. Adjusting the cable doesnt help too much as the lever still moves through the same arc.
As a DIY job, its not the worse there is, but it can be a bit of a pain. Removing the engine mount and lowering that end of the engine early on in the proceedings helps alot. You need a good tool kit as there are a number of different nut sizes, hex bolts and such like to deal with. Heres one clutch where an alignment toos is important, too. I'd also consider changing the rear crankshaft oil seal while the gearbox is off. Its not much more work and only costs a couple of quid. I did a GTI recently and it took me about 5 hours all in, including oil seal, taking things fairly easy.

Hi there

I would like some advice on best 4x4 for towing a horsebox (max all up weight 2500 kg) at weekends but running to work during the week. In other words, I want reasonable fuel economy 5 days a week and the ability to tow me and my beloved safely up hill and down dale at weekends.

Currently looking at Discos / Grand Cherokees et al. Budget max £20K.
Many thanks

To all who responded to the original posting, many thanks for all your suggestions - we've certainly made a thorough investigation of the possibilities and decided on ..... a Kia Sorento ... which should be arriving next Friday ! Will let you know later if we made the right choice, but it has been difficult to find a bad word spoken/written about them, so we'll see.

Thanks once again for all your help.

I bet a lot of you thought this would never actually get organised. Well, now it has and you had all better have some pretty good excuses not to make a showing! Does not matter if you are a regular or irregular, does not matter if you can only stay an hour or want to remain until we get forcibly removed. This is your opportunity to meet your fellow backroomers. Chances like this can be once in a lifetime :o) You may even find your esteemed moderators there as well...

It was quite a challenge finding a suitable venue but after some severe internet probing and a stressful Sunday of driving all over London I have come up with the goods. The pub is in North London and very easily accessible by both road (incl. the North circular and M25) and the Tube, serves reasonable food, has a safe and accommodating car park and welcomes children. It won\'t be ideal for everyone but anyone from the depths of the home counties, N,S,E or W, or even further afield can get here relatively easily.

Feel free to respond to this thread if you think you may be coming or need any extra information. Regarding locating the HJ lot - hmm... Am sure a large family innocently out for the afternoon would welcome your appearance at their table but may not understand your tendency to talk about all things motoring! I own a very bright yellow t-shirt which I am prepared to wear though I welcome your (clean!) alternative suggestions! Maybe HF would care to pick a suitably \"bright\" outfit for the day?! I shall provide a contact mobile number closer to the date as well. Please no negative posting - it really isn\'t possible to accommodate everyone\'s wishes and if this goes well doubtless there\'ll be a future event - you are free to start thinking about organising it!

I personally shall look forward to meeting all of you who can make it...

Date and time:
Sunday 7th September 2003 - 2pm onwards

Venue:
The Old Red Lion, Underhill, High Barnet. EN5 2BB

Directions

By tube:

** From High Barnet - Northern Line

Exit the station towards the station\'s car park (there is another exit which is a pathway heading uphill - do not go this way). Walk up the short road and at the top turn left down Barnet Hill. You\'ll see a pedestrian crossing a few yards in front of you. Cross here and continue to walk down the road in the same direction. The pub is about 100 yards up on your right, immediately off the main road and has a nice tall sign with a red lion on a yellow background.

** By car from North of pub

From the M25 Junction 24.

Take the roundabout exit signposted as Potters Bar town centre. About half a mile up you will reach a traffic-lighted crossroads where you need to turn left which is the A1000 towards Barnet. You\'ll pass under the M25. A mile or so of greenery including a golf course to the right. You then hit a 30mph zone which has a speed camera very soon into it (you have been warned). You\'ll hit some traffic lights (with a right turn - A1081) but you want to go straight on continuing on the A1000. Shortly afterwards you\'ll see a Dominoes Pizza on your left and Barnet College and then The Bathroom Trading Co to your right. Straight through another set of lights. Road widens and you\'ll go past the road to the tube station and through a pedestrian crossing. About 100 yards after the crossing you\'ll reach another set of traffic lights (and be able to see the pub!) - turn right here (Underhill) and immediately left into the pub car park. Should this car park be full there is another adjoining the pub on the Fairfield Way entrance.

** By car from South of pub

Travelling from the Finchley/North circular direction up the A1000. As you near High Barnet on the map, you\'ll see a big Odeon cinema on your left and then a BP garage set slightly back from the main road. Stay in the left hand lane which has road markings saying \"Local Roads\" (i.e. do not stay in the outside lane to continue up the A1000 at this point). As you reach the left turn (Fairfield Way) the pub should be in clear view - turn immediately right into the car park.

Not sure if this is strictly in the right place or not (powers that be can feel free to delete it tomorrow afternoon!)

I've got to meet someone at Bicester tomorrow (it's halfway between the both of us...) and I've never been before.

I will be going up the A34 from Newbury - does anyone know if are there any major landmarks/services etc that I can easily find and meet someone at?

Thanks! Read more

henry k

Easy answer. The A34 meets the M40, straight over the M40 and take the A41 towards Bicester. At the second roundabout turn right past Tesco to

www.bicestervillage.com/bicester/home.asp

It will possibly be very crowded but park up as directed.
Meet at the Coffee shop - Pret a Manger or by the big honey bear statue in the main street.

You might even be tempted to buy the odd item while you wait.
www.bicestervillage.com/bicester/village/default.a...p gives you the list of outlets.
There are no car showrooms there just the odd good buy.

Alternatively meet in the Tesco next door.

Do let us know the outcome.

Spotted a silver Merc C Class unmarked police car on M8 today in Lanarkshire, reg SA02GBY.
Also, there is a silver BMW 3 Series unmarked doing the Edinburgh side of the M8.

Get it right,
People who have a sierra can't afford to replace their car as often as a person who owns a BM, thats why beamers are being replaced more often then sierra's.

One of the downpipes (RH cylinder) connected to the first (of 2) catalytic converters on my beloved 1993 Legacy 2.2 auto estate has started blowing a little. Unfortunately the hole seems to be underneath one of the heat shields so it would be difficult to bandage. I have been quoted a staggering £440 just for the front part + cat (fitted) from a usually reliable & reasonable exhaust & tyre place. I realise the system is 10 years old and is probably due for replacement but the whole thing is stacking up to about £1000!!!It was my understanding when cats first came in, they were supposed to last the lifetime of the car and it was only the connecting pipes & silencers that needed to be replaced - or is this just wishful thinking? The usual suppliers (Bosal etc) don't seem to make replacement systems- just the non-cat rear section. Anybody had similar experiences & managaged a less costly solution? Suggestions v.gratefully received. Incidentally, we have owned the Legacy for 4 1/2 years, it has covered nearly 90,000 miles, taken us on holiday all over France 4 times without a moments trouble. The only downside to an otherwise brilliant, comfortable load-lugger family estate is that it is rather thirsty (28-32mpg)It is without a doubt, the best car we have ever owned.

Yep

Suggest you remove this pipe and get it plated/welded - same thing.

I have done this a few times to save on expensive exhaust sections.

A the same time, have a look at the other cat just to make sure you catch that one in time.

And when you've done that scan through Scooby spacialists and breakers on the web to see if you can spot some cheaper replacements - welding will give you another couple of years at most but they won't last for ever.
