hi all,
I bought this halfords stone chip and scratch repair system to try and repair this egg shell impact, but i think i put too much primer on and not sure what to use to remove it without scratching the surrounding bodypaint.

kind of made a small problem into a bigger problem, so any advice would be grateful.

I read that very fine sandpaper could work and a fine artish brush to apply the primer and paint, is that ok?

another seperate question is this product i saw on QVC called pilot green which is a big magnet you stick on you fuel pipe and claim to increase performance and save petrol etc. any truth to that?

Thank in advance for any help Read more

Advice needed please.

The coolant temp gauge on my Audi A4 has started to return to the minimum (60) setting for a few minutes and then returning to the usual mid setting (90). Then a few mins klater will repeat this. No apparent reason, I\'m usually cruising at 65-70.

It never goes above 90 but should it be going up and down between 60 and 90 as it is at the moment.

Oil temp gauge stays constant.

Is there a sender fault?
Could it be connected to the fact that the aircon (climate control) is being pushed harder in the hot weather?

Car has 2 weeks of warranty left and I would welcome opinions.

Thanks

i had a temperature sensor fault, this did not affect the gauge read out but did allow the car to rev up occasionally on start up. Audi found a fault code for this, i now have Vagcom to view the codes my self.

Hi everybody! Could somebody tell me how many litres of oil should I put in my 1.4tdi (3 cylinder) engine)?
Can you recommend a type of oil for this car?

Many thanks in advance!! Read more

My VW garage managed to guess the right oil for the engine... They gave me Shell VW 505.01 like u just wrote. I paid about 10 pounds/liter (!!!).
After I received your advice I went to them and bought another 1 liter of this oil and half of it is already in my engine..:) (they put only 4 liters).
My big problem was seeing I spent a lot of money on this car and the dealer are not prepared to mantain such car properly... Anyway, at least I know how much and what kind of oil I must use.
Regarding the user manual I'll try to obtain it from another local dealer or I'll make some photocopies from friends...
Thank you again. Best regards!

I have noticed a fair number of cars advertised on eBay that make a great feature out of being ex-police - why?

In my blissful ignorance, I would have thought they were about as attractive as an ex-taxi. Read more

There was a very sound looking 406 SRi on eBay for
about £1900 (120k on an S) that looked like a good
deal for somebody. At that money, even if it needs
a bit spending on maintenance, you're still getting a straight looking,
fastish, comfortable, five year old car for buttons.

Unless this was some years ago, thats a very poor deal - A 98S is getting on for 8 years old now and I can't imagine an 8 year old 120k 406 ex-police being worth more than £750 at the very best.

Plus they are not fast - not even the light pressure turbo models.

Ever wonder how when you go to a Ford dealer to get a tibbe key cut, or even if you've lost the key number tag, how the dealer can cut a perfect copy just by looking at it, heres how. This method will also give you your key number as well.

Look at a tibbe key from right to left, with the key flat and the plastic on the right, the widest part of the key is the code we're looking at. Imagine this piece to be divided into six segments, looking at the key flat, each of these segments has a degree of slope cut into it, no slope is no.1, slight slope is no.2, medium slope is no.3, max slope is no.4.
If you look carefully enough you'll get your key number.

Posted already mid-thread in a general discussion , then realised it should possibly be here.

I suspect my speedometer, as is quite common, is over-reading (i.e. displaying higher than actual speed). If I'm correct, I understand its illegal for a speedo to under-read, so most manufacturers err on the high side for safety.

However, I think it's more than a little high, and I'd like to check how far out it is.

I remember a method of checking using motorway distance markers (can't remember enough details to do it, though) but would it be possible/easier on a rolling road?

If so, what type of organisation would do this? Read more

>> Modern speedo's generally use an electronic transducer in the gearbox and a 'cross-coil' meter movement driven by a microprocessor. These are generally very accurate and so it is the manfr. who decides how much the unit should over-read ..

That probably explains why when I'm doing X mph on cruise control according to the speedo, the speed function on the trip computer usually shows X minus 7-8% mph - which I've always thought to be a more accurate figure.

If you have a trip computer you could try this - find a nice flat section of M'way, hold your speed at, say 60mph, reset you trip computer and see what the speed says...
It may not be 100% accurate but should give you an indication whether the speedo is out by a big margin.

Just had my astra 1.4 95 mot, it passed! first time, the garage guy said you want the good news or bad, before my joyous mood expires, he gave me some advice on some of the car niggles, the metal pipes on the brake is rusted up, the handbrake needs adjusting, god knows how to adjust it,one of the rubber bush needs replacing, and thats it also it needs a lick of underseal, my question why the hell vauxhall make metal pipes for the brakes, why not plastic or rubber.. Recently bought a 1995 Cavalier sri , yes the ecotec 2.0 litre engine. Wish I had read about the problems these engines cause before I bought it !!!!! Anyway this is the problem......start the car from cold .....its fine no problems there ....reverse uphill the drive and I seem to need to rev it fairly hard to get up there !! If not the car stalls...........! Sometimes the engine light (orange thing) comes on , if I turn off the engine then restart it sometimes goes out . The car on a run drives fine , good acceleration right through the rev-range no missfires at all , the car has only a K&N airfilter thingy on and no other mods engine wise . What on earth is wrong with the damn thing........anyone help me out with my new car ?????Please............................ Read more

UPDATE....yesterday I cleaned the contacts on the cam sensor. Took the car for a drive and didnt come on at all . The Mrs took the car to work today , and the light still hasnt come on, we then went for a drive and still no light on . In reply to what ""John S" has said , no mine doesnt behave that way , it seems to come on when it wants to , theres no set pattern to when it comes on .
Anyway I went to a local Vauxhall specialist today , just down the road from where we live (2 miles), they do all sorts of Vauxhall work and also do the sporty type accesorys . Well he quoted me for a cash sale £130 for cambelt and the roller things . Thats all in . I think thats a good price wouldnt you think ? To fit a new cam sensor its an extra £70 , which I may leave to be honest as the light doesnt seem to come on anymore , and like the garage and people on here have said , the sensor hasnt really anything to do with the cambelt .

I intend to change the coolant on my Mondeo and was wondering if there is anything more to it than a drain and re-fill.

Also where is the best place to drain from and should I use de-mineralised water rather than tap water mixed with anti-freeze?

Anything else I should know?

Thanks in advance.

I have replaced the original Dunlop SP200E's on my Passat with Pirelli P7,s.
The grip, especially in the wet, is miles better. So I would try these.
