I've got a 2002 A4 2.5TDI Avant Quattro (180bhp) and am considering chipping it.
I've contacted a number of tuning shops and have been quoted power hikes of between 25 and 42 bhp. In addition the torque goes from 273 lb ft for the standard car to between 310 and 340 lb ft in the modified car.
I guess the extra torque is the killer (the S4 develops 344bhp but only 300 lb ft). Is the extra torque especially at the 340 lbft end of things going to overstress the engine and/or transmission. I've heard that other cars which have been chipped sometimes slip their clutch. Or will restraint in 1st and 2nd gears be enough. What is the design tolerance built into these cars? (PS it is a manual)
Any thoughs appreciated. Read more

When did the V6 TDi engine come out? Early '98?

Those early engines gave problems with oil leaks, according to an Audi Technician who lives locally. This was his advice when I was looking for one.

I agree, the 180 V6 TDi should be OK, as it is a later model.

HI my neighbour's Clio 1.2 MPI won't start I wanted to check the fuel cut off switch and cannot decide if it is reset or not.

Does anyone know how this "feels" if it needs reseting I have pushed down on the rubber top but it does not click or move much.

The reason I suspect this is she had a similar problem two weeks ago and a friendly mechanic fiddled in that area.

I could take it out and put a meter on but I am not sure of number of contacts and open closed state.

Any ideas most welcome.

These inertia cut-offs have 3 terminals but not all companies use the third one to trigger things like automatically switching on hazard lights.
They used to be made in the UK and I used to work for the Co that made them. They are exceptionally reliable; in the 4 years I worked for the Co, we never had a single one fail due to manufacturing fault - a number were returned in a semi-destroyed state due to bad handling by "mechanics" and "automotive electricians" and most returns were of the no-fault-found variety. There are a number of problems due to them not being fitted correctly in vehicles, and also of problems with the mating connector on the vehicle wiring loom. The switch iteslf however is basically 100% perfect.

Hi,

Any one tell me how i get rid of an air lock in the cooling system?

I\'ve got a 97 (P) Vectra, I\'ve run the engine for about an hour with no cap on. Revving it up to normal op temperature, letting it spit all the water out & refilling. Then doing it again. But i still got air in the system. I\'ve tried driving about for a while with no cap on, but still got air in there.

Any one think f any other ideas please.

Many thanks

Hi

Hope somebody has had this as it is driving me nuts!

Got a D reg 1800 gt Scirocco which generally purrs. However there is a totally erratic fault. Every know and again the car cuts out. As you accelerate the engine lurchs and loses power. If you dip the clutch you can keep the engine running smoothly by hitting the gas but as soon as you let of the gas the engine dies. Very easy to start afterwards but will not drive, idles ok (sometimes!). if you leave it for a minute it will start ok and drive ok! You may be able to drive it ok for 20miles then go to the local shops and it lurches.

Totally random when it happens, the car either drives perfect or not at all, normally on the same journey.

Happens slightly more often going up hills but has happened on flat and downhill.

I have replaced today:

coil
HT leads
cap
rotor arm
vacuum hoses

Has had a recent fuel pump and air filter.

RAC blokey dismantled carb and cleaned jets.

Any ideas please before I go bald!!!!

Cheers all and stay happy Read more

The handbrake warning light on the dashboard is always on. I think it may be a faulty handbrake switch.
It has been doing this for the last 10 months/10k miles and I never
got round to sorting it out. MOT time is looming.

Is this an MOT fail?

You don't even need

a working speedo. Although you may get an "advisory".

I am sure I have seen a speedometer section printed on the 'fail sheet'

Following the recent thread on the relative merits of buying ex police cars, does anyone have any experience of purchasing ex MOD cars. There is a dealer local to me in Cornwall, Direct2U who supply these vehicles.

On the plus side I would assume that the cars are likely to have good service histories. On the down side they may have been used as pool cars with all the abuse that entails. Read more

I noticed that once too when browsing one of these sites, that armoured cars were not to be sold to UK buyers - anyone know why, is there actually a law against this?

Seems a bit odd that the general public can't protect themselves should they be paranoid enough to desire that, even though the chances of being shot at on UK roads is ludicrously small and I've no desire to ever own one myself!

Hello,

I have an Audi A4 2.0 MultiTronic 2001(51). It seems to conume a lot of oil. I need to top it upto 900ml every 1500 miles. The handbook suggests that it is normal for the car to consume upto 0.5 litres every 1000km (625 miles).

I think this is unreasonable because I find that I have no peace fo mind when embarking on long journeys and also the oil required is very expensive (£11 per litre).

Does anyone else have the same issue with this type of car? Any feedback would be welcome. Read more

I have exactly the same problem with an A4 I bought new in 2001. The oil consumption has been high from the start but within the limits stated in the handbook. I was initially told to expect this as the engine was running in. Around 20000 miles I started to monitor the amount I was using. This has got progressively worse and I am now using 1 litre of oil every 900 miles. I am in the process of having the consumption measured by the Audi dealership. Every dealership I have been to denies any knowledge of an ongoing problem with oil consumption and the A4. I've been given the run-around when it comes to getting them to investigate the problem. I am now nearing the 60,000 miles mark and expiry of the warranty. However I intend to pursue this problem to the finish. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one experiencing this problem. £20000 is too much to spend on a faulty car. Let me know how things progress Shifty.

Can any one tell me how to remove the inside door panel from the rear passenger door of a VW Mark 3 Golf?

Once it is removed I need to re-connect the window to the electric winding mechanism. Any tips on that would also be welcome. I have tried but short of using a jimmy wrench in a destructive manner I has me beat.

Further to the previous advice re. removing panel... You mention 'reconnecting the window to the electric winding mechanism'. Not sure if a Passat is the same but when mine stopped working (but motor was trying) it was the cable in the lifter mechanism that had gone. New lifter mechanism required and is, I think, a dealer only part (approx £60). You might be lucky to get a scrap one, but I doubt it as rear elec windows are not common.

Please help. I have had the AA out to my galaxy 1997 2.0glx, they told me the air compressor has seized up which is why my belt snapped and told me it was a costly job. However if I wanted I could get a belt that did not drive the air con, but would have to do without air con, loooking at how much I have been quoted for air con, I decided to do with out it, but the Ford garage I have contacted say they have to put the belt round the compressor and cannot fit a belt to drive everything else without the air con. Please help me; are Ford ripping me off? Can I get belts that drive everything else and do not need to go around the compressor or am I going to have to pay out £700? Read more

Galaxy air con is a weak point and prone to failures. The compressors cost about £450 plus VAT from Ford dealers and fitting can be done in a couple of hours. I know - I'm one of many who have had trouble with their Galaxy aircon systems under warranty. See www.fordgalaxy.org.uk technical threads for more info. This is an invaluable site for Galaxy owners like me.
Good luck.
