Forum Xedos 6
steveb

A neighbour a few doors away has his Mazda Xedos 6 up for sale. On an R plate for £4,250, unknown mileage but looks in good condition. The issue is that on the notice in the window, along with phone no. etc is that it's a 2.5 auto V6. Looking at the Car-by-car on the left, there's no reference to a 2.5, only a 2.0l or 1.6.

Is the owner mistaken (some mistake) ? or is it an import perhaps ?

Cheers,

These engines have a known distributer problem. Mazda will want to charge about 350 for a new one, but only a couple of parts are actually required and these cost about 80 from Ford.

The rocker cover gaskets can leak, leading to oil in the plug wells, not too serious, as long as it doesn't stop the plugs from sparking.

Lots of other v useful info on these websites.

Having owned an mx6, I can vouch for the quality of these motors. You wont be getting much better than 28mpg motorway with the auto, but you will at least have a smile on your face.

Actually, www.drivethedeal.com is doing a Focus 1.4 Studio (which should have ABS), leccy windows, central locking and... that's it really for £7800 brand new.

3 year warranty, safe, reasonably stylish, and sell it when she's finished uni for about £5000!

Dear All,

I've just looked at pugugly's note 'Fun' and saw his mention of CD's in windscreen. I recently saw several cars being driven by Indian or Asian drivers and they had the above mentioned hanging from the drivers mirror. They had writing of an Indian/Asian appearance on them and I assumed it was a cultural or religious adornment of some sort. However am I mistaken in that thought and is there some other, more down to earth, reasoning attached to them?

Surely there are road-safety aspects here? a CD twinkling away in the sun/obstructing your view don't seem to clever to me ...

My wife bought an F-reg Pug 205 1.1 GL a few months ago. There was a lot of play in the transmission and it was apparent the driveshafts were nackered.I fitted new ones but there was still a lot of play which appears to have got worse.I suspect the gearbox is nackered and the play is going to wreck the new driveshafts.Any ideas. The split mount won't have damaged the driveshafts. I shouldn't worry about it too much as clonk noises are not unusual from driveshafts. Most of the play in a driveline comes from the clutch disc because it has springs to cushion torsional oscillations.

X5

I ask only because I'm interested...

Why does there seem to be a presumption against towing with automatics? I regularly tow a horse & trailer (total about 1.75 tonne), previously with an auto Rangey classic, and now with my X5. I've never had a problem, but when I tell people, I get the pursed lips and shaking head treatment. So far as I can see, there shouldn't be a problem so long as the transmission oil has a cooler.

Having been involved in AT applications in new vehicle design, here are the facts as I remember them.
Optimum ATF operating temperature (Mercon, Dexron) is about 80 deg. C. Typical modern FWD applications tend to run hotter (space limitations) - typically 110 - 125 deg. C. This is really quite hot, and towing will lead to a further rise in temperature resulting in fluid oxidation.
Ninety percent of premature AT failures are due to fluid overheating.

Some transmissions have inherent design weaknesses (e.g. front clutch on ZF4HP22, diff. bearings on ZF4HP14, most things on Ford CD4E!).

The Ford CD4E (Mondeo, Explorer) is not a good auto, it has been bedevilled with problems since it was introduced and if you get to 100k mi. you are doing well.

If you are towing with any auto then consider a cooler (esp. if in hilly country) and change fluid frequently. If you have a Ford auto then change fluid very frequently (e.g. annually) and make sure you use the correct Mercon fluid from a Ford dealer. Personally I wouldn't want to tow with a Mondeo (CD4E) auto.

I have a throbbing type noise that relates to the revolutions of the wheels, it is not the tyres is it most likely the bearings?
the car has 51000 miles on the clock any suggesgion please. the car is a deawoo leganza Read more

Bromptonaut

You don't say if the noise is from the front or rear wheels. Our BX steadfastly refuses to wear out the treads of its rear tyres. Instead on three occasions they have developed lumps in the rolling surface as the casing starts to fail leading to a drumming noise. Take off each wheel in turn and carefully examine, looking for areas of uneven wear etc.

Question Heater smell
welshy

Hi all again ,I have a Peugeot 405 1994 model . This maybe be nothing but when the heater is on the Hot setting and when the heater blower decides to work the Hot air smells like , well its hard to explain but... it smells like gone off water , this smell only happens when the heater is on the Hot setting it does not smell while on the cold setting . Any ideas why it smells ? Should the coolant be changed or something , it does not leak any water . Read more

...and it may be leaking with no visible signs in the car - i.e. no wet carpets etc.
