I have a Rover 200 Coupe on an L plate, the alarm seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes it goes off 4 times in a day then nothing for a week. It is parked in the same place every night (sheltered, i thought it might be wind that is setting it off) and their is no pattern. please help Read more

We had the same problem on our M reg 420Gsi, it was caused by a faulty door light switch. So try disconnecting all of them for a while and see what happens.

Question Honda S2000
JOHN 2002

My neighbour bought a Honda S2000, new, last November.
Unfortunately he's recently had major surgery and finds the hard ride almost unbearable. He's been told that this is likely to persist for perhaps eight to ten months, so he's considering selling his pride and joy.
Honda say they can make the suspension harder but not softer.
I was wondering if there might be a better solution in the form of a more compliant seat that could be fitted, which might ease the pain - both physical and financial! Read more

Can anyone advise? We have just bought a new Leon ( which has already had a new bonnet due to a paint / body blemish !!)and the power steering is incredibly heavy in comparison to any other car I have driven. We asked the dealer to check it out when they were changing the bonnet and the mechanics said there was nothing wrong with it. The salesman did agree that it seemed heavy but was guided by his mechanics. In my opinion it was Saturday lunch and they probably couldn't be bothered to check it. Can anyone advise what the problem could be or what I could tell them to check when I take the car back in again.!! Read more

Well my partner has just bought a SEAT Leon TDi S in Extreme Blue, 1yr old ex demo on 195/65VR15's. His previous car was a Fiat Punto with the City (Girlie) button - which he used all the time (and which wears the front tyres out at an alarming rate!) and so he was used to featherweight steering, yet he hasnt complained about the weight of the PAS on his Leon. I have a smart and on the occasions that i've driven the Leon I never thought "blimey isnt the steering heavy?".

Maybe yours need a bit of air in the tyres, these dealers can be a bit lax when it comes to checking these things on PDI.

Hi chaps

Got a 1998 1.7VCT Puma, which seems to produce a single "knocking" sound if you go hard round a right-hand bend. When I say "hard" I mean enough to cause tyre scrabbling at the front. The car seems to produce a single "knock" from the front somewhere. Apart from this, all handling characteristics seem fine, as is tyre-wear etc. Am I worrying about nothing? It's always done it I've noticed since we got the car last summer. Only seems to to it when I'm driving, and not for the wife... wonder why that could be?!

cheers in advance for any insight

Nortones,

This only goes to show that female relatives should *never* be consulted when choosing cars ;-)

Thanks for the link - I'll take a look when I get chance!

Question punto clutch
1.2punto60sx

a few weeks ago i noticed a fluttering/grinding noise when the clutch was pressed halfway to the floor

different people have told me this may be down to the thrust bearings.

the problem got worse until last tuesday it stopped. great i thought(if slightly suspicious) since then though the noise became just a 'fluttering' one, loudest in 1st then dying away until inaudible in 4th but also audible in neutral.

i told this to the mechanic and we both took a drive "gearbox bearings" he offered.

is he being straight with me on this or is he trying to do me over? does it need a new gearbox? or just a new clutch?even with my limited knowledge surely it cant be gearbox bearings as i can hear the noise when its idling.

Question Peugeot 307

I have a new Peugeot 307 and have steering wheel tremor at about 70-75 mph. It feels as though the balance needs doing, so had the wheels balanced, new drive shafts, steering rack dampner adusted (made the steering stiff!) but still there.

Is this "normal" or is it a problem?

It's been suggested that the tyres don't agree with the car?

16" wheels with 205/55/16 Good Year NCTs - standard equipment - not added.

Or is it something really simple?

Any help would be great cheers. Read more

Hi All

I have a VW Golf 1300 Mk2 82,000 miles.

I have a slight radiator leak. The source of the leak appears to come from the bottom right hand corner of the radiator.

I have bought some repair putty (for petrol tanks & radiators), will this work?

I do not want to use holts RadWeld.

Thanks

There is no way any of these putties or Radweld will work for any time with a modern, pressurised system. Don't waste your money, put it towards a recon radiator from a reputable supplier. However, check very carefully that it is the rad leaking and not a hose, or where a hose fastens to the radiator. I can't remember whether the bottom hose attaches to the radiator at the bottom right hand side on a Golf Mk.2

Any idea what the usual cost for tracking is?

IIRC ATS charge £25, which seem a bit high.

I've just been quoted £80! But then again, it was an Audi dealer and my car is a quattro!

That'll teach me!

MOT Saturday just gone. I knew the car would it would fail -left rear fog light bulb was blown. I advised the garage and asked them to change it for me - which they said they would.

I recieved a call Saturday pm saying the car had passed bar the emissions test, not failed, the machine was not working.

Got the car back on saturday evening and arranged a time for today (Monday) to complete the test - bit annoying but hey these things happen I guess.

Since then I have checked the bulb and they have not replaced it, as according to them the car has passed in all areas apart from emissions I'm going to query it with them tonight. I'm a little concerened I have stumbled accross a dodgy garage (I'm new to the area) I don't view the MOT as something to 'just get the car through' as I believe it is an important part of ensuring vehicle safety and whilst I don't believe my vehicle to be unsafe I don't have full confidence they have thoroughly checked the vehicle.

I realise they could just have 'missed' an non-operational bulb (which is not so good in itself)but on the other hand they may not have even bothered checking.

I'll update tommorow but just wondering if anyone had any similar experinces/advice in the meantime. Read more

Thanks for your help guys.....I'm off the 'complete' the test in half an hour.

Some of you good folk may know that fighter planes have been using head up displays for decades.

This is a system which projects vital instrument readings onto a display in the pilot's straight ahead, through the canopy, line of sight. Thus allowing the pilot to read his instruments with his 'head up' with the obvious benefit that he does not drop his eyes away from the important stuff going on in the real World outside the canopy.

I would have thought these benefits would translate well into the motoring arena and have thus been wondering if this has ever been tried with cars, why is it not commonplace now? Any thoughts, info from the cognoscenti out there?

I had a '92 Nissan Bluebird(Japanese homemarket model)and that had a display projected onto the windscreen that showed speed and revs.
