Hi folks
Next door neighbour has a non-starting problem with his 7-series that turns out to be premature bore wear. Is this the Nicasil liner problem and what can he do about it? The bill is scary. Does anyone know if BMW will foot the bill (or part of it)? It's a 1995 car I think.
If anyone has any websites or forums he can visit when his computer is working again (it hasn't been a good couple of weeks) he'd be grateful.
Sorry if this has been covered before but I couldn't find it.
Cheers

I now have a silver Rover and have noticed a few flecks of light blue paint of the bonnet, windscreen and wing mirror. How can i go about removing these without damaging the exsisting paint and plastic of the wing mirror? Read more
Guess you don't know what type of paint it is, so I'd try white spirit, first.
Maybe some petrol.
It might be shifted with polish. If it works, you'll obviosly need to get THIS off the screen, too, with spirit.
If you start on T cut, type cleaners, beware abrasive action, especially on glass.
Should these be no good, a visit to a bodyshop & see if they could do it with a coarser compound polish.

Hello
I was wondering if someone can tell me about Catalytic converters. What exactly do they do? What cars have them? What does the law say about them? When did they first appear?
I have a VW Passat TDI M Reg Estate, would this have a Catalytic converter and if so where this would be indicated?
Many thanks

This issue of still passing the MOT with the cat removed probably relates to early '90s cars where the cats were being introduced. In the case of the Cavaliers, and some models had them and others didn't. 2.0litres were a case in point - around '92 SRis didn't have them, but other 2.0 litre models did.
The result was that rather try to define the emissions levels to individual models, the emission levels were set for the non-cat cars.
It wasn't just Cavaliers. I had a '90 BMW with the optional cat, but the MOT pass level was that for a non-cat car.

SWMBO took her Mini to a local dealer for first service under TLC package. This is the dealer experience.
She phoned last week, line was engaged but she was invited to leave details and they would call back, which they did in three minutes. Booked it in for a Specific time (i.e. instead of "first thing").
She turned up early and was met by the Service area gate by a Driver who took the car from her and sent her inside where she booked the car in. She reported a sticking window which occured on the way to the dealer. Car was due to be ready within 90 minutes.
Guy who sold her the car saw her came to greet her and remembered
her name (after nearly a year)
She has a cup (note a proper cup) of coffee and went shopping. Ca
me back later, car was almost ready and she had to wait an extra twenty minutes - another cup of cofee ??
This is the first time we've used this dealer as paying customers.
Car delivered to her cleaned on the outside and valeted on the inside. Sticky window had been sorted, service book stamped up and back in its folder. Read more
Same treatment with two different Audi garages (but you pay for it when you buy the product), when the salesman remember my name after a year i wondered if it was because i had been a good pay day for him.
Hi all:
For a number of reasons**, I drove my usual section of the M20 at a constant indicated 70 mph this morning, instead of my more normal 85ish. I stuck to this speed because I was intrigued. I joined at junction 10 and shortly after junction 9 I overtook my first car. I then carried on past junction 8 and exited at junction 7. Total distance about 18 miles(?) I didn't overtake another single car.
The motorway was pretty busy at 0745-0800 as you will imagine and I really find it surprising that so few motorway users travel at an indicated legal speed.
What should be done?
**Firstly because I was a little early out of bed this morning. Secondly because I've noticed recently that I can dramatically improve the Mondeo's fuel consumption by driving more slowly on motorways.
Hope this is food for thought and discussion and not a promt for rants of the Speed Kills - oh no it doesn't variety.

On the A1 yesterday they switched on the Matrix signs with a 70mph speed limit. I remember someone else on this board said this happened near them but I didn't beleive that they would actually use the Matrix signs to display the 70mph limit... Seems they do, so that means it's OK to do 80ish0 normally then and just stick to 70 when they ask you to?
I'm confused...

The quality of dumped cars in East Anglia is improving. Over the last couple of days, have seen a dark green L-reg Mondeo estate, a lovely old Mercedes 230CE coupe, a Renault Clio and a late eighties Jaguar XJ6, all obviously dumped and with bits missing. The banger trade must really be in a poor state, if cars like this are being abandoned at the roadside.

This is all very amusing unless you live in a place like I do, in the country but not far from the outer surburbs where you see car after car dumped by (let me choose my words carefully here) lazy scum. It's easy to trace them off the VIN. Three points plus disposal and admin costs is entirely fair. Or maybe cement a big sign in their front garden saying "If you can't be bothered walking a few yards to a bin, no problem, just dump your rubbish here, I don't mind a bit"
Im thinking of buying W reg 110 diesel at 40 k what are they like to own and drive Read more
I drove the 110 HDI engined Xsara and loved every minute of it. The HDI engines improve with age.
I currently drive a 1.4 Xsara and love car.
Have you also considered the C5? Similar prices to the Xsara, similar fuel consumption and insurance groups.

I am considering purchasing a good quality toolbox as my existing doesn't really contain a great deal.
Can anyone suggest where I might find a good quality set?
I don't think I need anything out of the ordinary just something comprehensive that's going to last me.
Thanks

Spark plugs never need a "good tighten" First do them up finger tight, then approx a ½ turn with the spanner afterwards if they're new, or approx ¼ of a turn if they've previously been used.
Hi there, I bought a SAXO 1.4i SX '96 'P' Reg about a month ago.
The fuel consumption was fine driving it back to London on the M1 and also surprisingly good going to and from work in traffic for the first two weeks.
However, recently I'm getting about 200 miles out of a full tank, this is compared to about 500 miles previously. I don't know if it is something to do with the injection.
Also when I start it in the morning there seems to be a complete loss of power for the first few seconds, this could be that the car is cold, but I wondered if it is at this moment that the engine is pushing too much fuel through?
Can someone please help, I don't think my wallet can take much more of this.

I'm sure you'd have noticed it, but is the fuel tank leaking? I've just had to have mine replaced, it had rusted along the seam.
I'll soon be replacing the two front tyres (fitted on BK Racing 604 alloys). The balance weights are stuck in between the spokes of the wheels. Can anyone recommend a way of removing these weights and the remaining glue/sticky stuff without harming the coating on the wheel.

It also helps to heat it up with a hair dryer to make the adhesive softer.
