Hi All.
My son has an N reg 96 Corsa 1.5 TD. GLS About 150K on the clock.
It is becoming quite difficult to select 5th gear.
You go through the normal process, up, right, push, and it goes smooth as silk into third.
Problem is worse when hot, and you have to push quite hard to the right all the way from fourth to do it.
When it does go in there's no sign of a crunch, and the car actually drives very well.
Any ideas if this is common with Corsas, and/or if it's likely to very costly to fix. (Up to about £100 would be regarded as accepable).

...so many new car owners remove their wheel trims from the car straight after buying it? It automatically ages the car by five years in IMHO.
Are they scared they will fly off and cause damage to other cars or pedestrians? I cant think of any other reason (short of them being nicked!)
Im a loser baby....so why don't you kill me?! Read more
First thing I did when the Cav arrived was rip off the OE wheel trims (all date stamped 4/94 - fitted in with other plastic bits on the car). The reason I did this was to make life easier for any user who either had a puncture or had a tyre slashed when the car was in the rougher parts of town where it earns it keep.
From an aesthetic point of view I always thought that a Cav on Tommies looked better without the trims, something about the way the black painted wheels seem to lower the stance of the car.
Bit of a long one, sorry. Trying to get a quote on an A6 Avant 2.8 SE. 7 yrs old, worth £4995. I have had a clean licence for the last 6 odd years and have held it for 20 yrs. I'm 38, married, kids, mortgage, the whole picture. My house is half a mile off the nearest road in a country area. Yet because, over a year ago, someone nudged the company car I had at the time in a car park while I was in a meeting in a mile away, I am being quoted £1050 for fully comp.with £400 excess. Without this claim the prem would have been £750. One price is from a company which has been recommended here, the other a broker picked at random.
Can anyone explain how the actions of someone I've never met and over which I had no control, in connection with a car I didn't own, can possibly make me a higher risk of future claims arising, when I have an unblemished driving record? Basically the insurance company is saying there is a one in 5 chance that the car will be written off in the next 12 months.
Does anyone know of an insurer who will insure a group 18 car on 3rd party F&T because at these rates I might as well self-insure for accident damage? Are there any insurers who will look at the value of the car rather than just its ins. grp? Are there any insurers who can distinguish between a 10 foot drive outside your house and a half mile dead end track to a farm house? Read more

Yes, that's the other issue. Each individual vehicle policy earns its own NCD, despite the fact that the vehicles in a household probably have the same drivers. So, you can't use NCD earned on your other car for this new one.
Protected bonus is essentially an additional premium against the loss of NCD a claim would create. It's rarely total cover, usually allowing X claims in Y years.
As you're insuring two cars, there's a double whammy if a named driver has a claim. The policy holder suffers (it's a claim on their policy), as does the named driver should they apply for their own insurance as they have to admit to having had an event leading to a claim.

I know I've had a few threads about getting a new car, and I appreciate everybody's help.
However, things have changed. I have decided to make the life-changing step of quitting my job (don't know what my new 'back-room' name will be) and starting a teaching degree as a mature student.
For those that don't know, I currently run a 1986 2.0i Auto Granada. This, whilst being an excellent, trouble free (touch wood), rattle free, comfortable car will be far too expensive to run when I start my course.
So, I am looking for a small, economical, well-specced diesel (preferrably turbo, but not essential). Ideally, it should be as new as possible and I'm realistically looking at £3k to spend. I have no real preferences about make and am not worried about 'badge snobbery'.
I have two children under the age of 7, but we no longer need room for the huge pram etc.
Any help that you back roomers can give would be very welcome. Thanks for your time!

RtB - I'd support the ZX-TD suggestion (but personally I'd go for the 306). The important thing is to go for a M/N-plater rather than one with a cat in the exhaust - it will have much more nip about it. And 50+mpg unless you're really heavy-footed.
I have just purchased an approved used vw bora 1.6 S (registered in 2000). It seems to have a regular miss when idling (that is noticable inside the car) and also I it is impossible to get the car to decelerate smoothly.
When the car is in neutral if I increase the revs to 2200 and then try to ease off to 1800 the revs just drop to idle and the accelerator pedal is pulled away from my foot! When driving in 4th or 5th and you ease off the pedal still moves away. In 1st or 2nd if you just accelerate and then ease off the car nose dives and almost stalls (it does stall if you let it).
This is the best bit, I took the car back to the dealership and they have told me that these are "normal characteristics of the Volkswagen 1.6 SR engine".
Has anybody got/had a similar vehicle and are these normal characteristics? Read more
I have a 12 month old 8000 mile golf 2 litre. The engine has been replaced (twice) now and the car now judders on decelleration from 2000 to around 1000 revs. The fuel consumption is noticeably affected. The dealer says the engine is 'hunting' and is a feature of golfs.

Does anyone know where it is possible to buy Dinitrol rustproofing products at a discount? The cheapest I can find is £30 + VAT and postage for 4 litres of Dinitrol 3125. I'd happily buy in bulk if I could get it much cheaper.
Thanks in advance. Read more
A quick search on google.co.uk shows 10 - 12 quid per litre is the going rate.
Incidentally, and off topic....
Terry, I\'ve posted your off topic post in the \"silly\" thread in discussion. DD.
Hey!
Im seriously considering a Cordoba (or maybe Ibiza) with the outstanding TDI 130 PD engine and 6-speed 'box but wonder why the larger Leon and Toledo do not come with this engine. My local dealer had hoped that the attractive new Toldeo Sport would ship with the 130 engine but alas its got the troublesome 1.8 20V-T petrol only. I understand that in Europe the Leon can even be had with the TDI150 - why are we kept from such power!
I also notice that whilst Skoda have PD power in the Fabia and Superb, the Octavia is still packing the old 110 rotary-pump lump. I would seriously consider a Toledo if it had the 130 engine, as at the current prices it looks like far better value than a Cordoba. Any ideas when (if?) it may be available with the PD engine?
Thanks Read more
Having seen a Cordoba at my local SEAT dealer last Saturday (while there to get the dealer to fix a rear light on our new Ibiza, collected the previous day, with the 100 bhp PD engine) I have to say that you should only buy a Cordoba if you don?t mind people pointing at your car & laughing.
I think that the reason the Leon & Octavia don?t come with the PD engine is that they?ve been around a while now and were not considered suitable for the VAG flagship diesel engine. Why SEAT isn?t allowed to put one in the new Toledo I don?t know, it would seem to make sense given that the current quick Ibiza has it.
My other car is an Octavia 110 bhp estate (Fergus will obviously be sending the men in white coats round to my house) so I suppose I?m well placed to make a comparison between the latest VAG diesel technology & its previous incarnation which I will do once I?ve driven the SEAT a bit more. Initial impressions are that the PD is noisier than the older engine but in the lighter SEAT it really does push you along very well. I seem to recall being disappointed with the noise of the Octavia?s engine at first but it?s getting quieter now I?ve done a few miles (or I?m getting used to it) so hopefully the SEAT will be similar.
I?ll be keeping a close eye on the oil consumption of the SEAT over the coming months (must get some Millers XFE-PD or whatever it?s called) and being careful about running it in.

No, not that one.
I'm fed up driving crap cars and have decided to spend up to £5000 on a reliable car. I live in a hilly area and a car with part time 4X4 would be great. A local dealer has a beautiful Dec 1999 Honda HR-V 1.6 4X4, nice colour, cd palyer, aircon etc. It is group 8 insurance and is nice to drive (in comparison to my previous 88 POLO and current 94 Metro). Asking price is £5750 -maybe £5000 along with Metro if I show him the cash. So am I wrong? Is there something better out there? Thanks Read more
nice colour
What colour is it? My cousin's just bought a Y-reg one in a hideous metallic yellow. She thinks it's great...
While driving on Saturday an alarm tone and malfunction indicator came up on my year 2000 MB 230 CLK Kompressor.
Indication was BAS - Brake assist with severity 2 and visit workshop advice.
Returned home and message remained in malfunction display.
This morning, no malfunction and no record in the malfunction display.
I have an indicated 6000 miles to next service, which with my current driving profile will not be for some 3-6 months.
Advice please?

Thanks for advice - will keep an eye on it.
I have an Audi 80 S2 with cruise control on the indicator stalk.
It only works about one in every ten times I try it and when it does work, it switches itself off after about two minutes.
While it is working I accelerate and decelerate using the switch, but it's simply not reliable.
I had an Audi dealership look at it when it was in getting a service recently. They ran out of time, but had already worked out that the switches under the pedals are OK, as is the vacuum system.
Can it be something as simple as the actual switch? Or am I looking at an expensive repair?
Any help would be appreciated.
