What do you lot know about Omega\'s? A Relative of mine is having trouble with what appears to be a sensor failing intermittantly On the gearbox. All of a sudden, whilst driving along, the gearbox wll just become a box full of neutrals. A quick stop and restart clears it and it might be ok for a couple of miles, or a couple of months, Any ideas? Read more

Sounds like the Gearbox Selector switch is playing up. If it\'s anything like the one they use on the Cavalier/Vectra, start saving up the pennies -they\'re not cheap. That is of course if the gearbox you\'re refering to is an auto?

Help! My 1992 Mk2 8V GTI will suddenly cut out when driving along. This occurs as it is warming up and the colder the air temp the further I can get before it happens. The cutting out can happen under load or when idling at traffic lights etc. The car will normally restart straight away and carry on for the rest of the day without problems. Occasionally the car will not restart for several minutes (engine flooded?). I've changed plugs, leads and distributor cap has anyone any ideas as to where to look next?

Thanks for the replies. The car is now being looked at by a garage. There appears to be two faults - a dodgy ignition switch which caused the difficult restarting and an, as yet not found, intermittent fault causing it to cut out. Tests so far seem to suggest a problem with the ECU relay and/or the power supply to the ECU. The difficulty is that the fault can only be reproduced when the car is cold, once warm it's fine.

I bought this car a 98 S last August from a franchised VW dealer. Intially I had a few problems (wheel bearing, Central Locking etc) that the salesman said weren\'t there when I picked it up. Anyway got them sorted on the extended warranty.

Lately though, while driving with my mate in my car he said that it seemed to lack power compared to his similar golf diesel. So I had it checked out at another franchised dealer. This dealer phoned me the same day to ask if any work had been done on my car since I bought it. None has been done.

He said that one of the pipes leading to the turbo had been bent and another disconnected resulting in a pretty major problem. A new turbo is going to be fitted under warranty. My question is, should this, along with the other faults, have been picked up on in the pre delivery checks in the first instance? Also what sort of approach should I take with the original garage in displaying my displeasure with them?

I realise I am whistling into the wind but would welcome any comments.

Cheers

Pretty much my thoughts Dave. The original dealer is not doing the work on it and will not be touching my car again. Since this happened I have heared of a few people dissatisfied with this dealership.

The garage doing the work though are very reliable and helpful though.

I heard from my dealer today that there is a new safety recall to \"beef up\" the main fuel filter but he had no further information. Does anybody know any more about this? Read more

Because the recall notice- the dealer showed it to me briefly- specifically covered mondeo and focus cars. When my pump failed for the first time, in July, the dealer told me that he had only had a couple of failures with the mondeo at that time but had done at least 10 focuses ( or should that be focii?)

I wonder if anyone can give me some guidance on replacing the coolant in my sister's P reg Clio 1.1.

I don't have a workshop manual or anything. How many bleed screws are involved, Is there anything I should be aware of that's out of the ordinary??

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

I've just had a new engine fitted in a P reg 306 Turbo Diesel, the imobiliser seems to be not taking the code though, the bloke who's fitted the engine has tried putting in 1111 then cancel and the actual code but the red light keeps on flashing.

Is there a problem because of the new engine? Read more

mph_turbo

As far as I know, the immobiliser is linked to the fuel pump and from what I\'ve heard, it is a pain at times! High milage cars often end up having to bypass the immobiliser inside the fuel pump.

I recall reading in the press a while back of a case where the local highways authority had reduced the limit on a stretch of road from (I think)40 mph to 30mph. They did this simply by removing the 40mph signs, and as a result a motorist was caught several times by a speed camera in a short time facing certain disqualification.

Aparrently they were not obliged to inform the motoring public or display the new speed limit because under highway leglislation the distance between the lamp posts dictated it was 30mph without any signs.

Does anyone know what the outcome was in this case?

I wondered just after posting if anyone would pick up on that innocent remark - it didn't take long did it, DTD?!!!

Learning the Trade

Anyone venture some advice, I put my car into a reputable and recommended garage to have the downpipe replaced and quoted a price which included fitting all inclusive.

I\'ve since returned to pay for the work and pick up the car to be told that it needed an extra two hours work which they are charging as the bolts had seized and needed working, drilling or somthing. Not a problem these things happen.

When the car came back from their test drive, they then informed me when doing the work they knocked the sump tank when removing the original down pipe and cracked it, as they put it, it was already very weak and now I need to pay for a new sump tank and gasket and 3 hours additonal labour.

Anyone any advice on how to handle this, I feel, but I am unsure, that the responsibility is theirs as the car didn\'t have this problem until they created it. Or could it just have been waiting to happen and be grateful that they found the sump tank was weak? Read more

Nick, Gen's answer is right on the money. There are lawful excuses but it's quite easy to prove recklessness if a reasonable man would have seen the consequence coming.

Certain offences, such as supplying alcohol to an inebriated person in Cundy v LeCoq attract strict liability, i.e., even if there is no malicious intent or even a way of knowing that you are committing the offence, you can be convicted of it. If you drive at 90 mph in a car with a broken speedo and are keeping up with the traffic, you are still committing an offence.

Even so, I agree that there is not much chance of a criminal damage as 'lawful excuse' here would cover the car being worked on even if they were ham fisted about it.

Question Mercedes W124
IanK

I bought an Mercedes E220 W124 new in September 2000 from Trade
Sales in Slough. The car had apparently been made in knocked-down form for
the Indian market in 1996. I was surprised that the wipers do not have flick-wipe
facility or the ability to vary the delay time. Is it possible to modify it to get
these facilities, perhaps by fitting a part or parts from another model?

Also, the car does not have a VIN plate or the chassis no. etched on the screen, just a
(partial?) chassis no. stamped direct into the metal in the engine compartment. I have been told that I will have problems when it comes to putting it through the MOT because of the lack of the VIN plate. Has anyone experienced this problem? I know that there was a previous batch of these cars sold by Trade Sales which must be past their due date for the first MOT by now.

Hello Ian

thanks for the info, I must admit I thought long and hard about buying one of these when Trade Sales advertised them. If I recall they were £13k on the road against a Trade Sales claimed rrp of about £28k the only thing being MB no longer listed the model so a comparison was hard to make. At the time I was planning to get rid of a Vectra DI and £13k was in budget. I had three lenghty phone conversations with TS and each time another nugget of information which put me off was disclosed. Amongst these items was the fact the cars had been standing somewhere for 2-3yrs, At the time I called most were manuals and I was trying to follow the suggestion that MBs were best as autos and again when I called they only had white ones left. This coupled with the fact they told me there was no way MB UK would honour a warranty claim and that various insurers sucked their teeth when I rang for quotes pushed it further and further away with the result I bought a new TDI Passat.

However for me it remains a big what if and I must admit after reading your post I do regret not getting one especially as the depreciation game would probably have been better than the Passat, who knows though how do you value one of these?

I am glad yours worked out well for you, any interesting tales or experiences to either make me feel better or worse about my decision at the time would be appreciated.

as ever

Electro Man

I used to have quite a high annual mileage and drove a normal saloon. Since I have moved and changed jobs I have, for a while now, downsized to something smaller.

Since I changed to the smaller car I have noticed that I seem to be cut up more and cars seem to pull out from side roads/on islands in front of me much more often than when I was driving the larger car. My driving style hasn't (I don't think) changed to any great extent.

I don't know whether it is because people don't see me or because they think I am going slower than I actually am.

Does any one else have any thoughts? Read more

Will be doing a 100mile off-road ride in aid of Asthma
Research (they could save their time and just tell people not
to do b***** stupid distances on their bikes) this June so
am trying to get out every weekend now, doing 20 miles
in shortest possible time, then going for a longer ride to
build up the stamina.

That is fantastic, ND, the very best of luck with it - let us know how you get on in June, please?
