Hope this is not a Girl-un-friendly place here - good site btw.

Im looking for a Mondeo and have seen a 1.8 petrol one (in lovely shiny silver, fluff, fluff, pink teddy bears blah di blah!).

Its an S and obviously has been a co. car with 89K.

However, Im going to be doing 180 is per day, so on those calculations I will have done 1k in a week and thus, over 55 K in 12 months time (with a bit of personal mileage in there too).

The body is imaculate (I counted 3 stone chips on the bonnet).

Its £3995 and Im thinking of offering £3,500-600. Would you say a recon engine would suffice in 12 months?

Appreciate your comments.

thanks

May goodness, havent I been prattling one! Thanks for putting all of this together (even if I have gone a rosey shade of red); I must admit to being a tad confused when I first saw the thread title: couldn't remember putting that one up there.

Anyway - thanks Blue Oval, you've really given me some excellent advice - I really should have listened to you in the first place! You'd told me to check with a local dealer ages ago.

Hi,

The car in question is a 1993 405 2.0 STi Auto.

The problem is the idle. On startup the car seems to want to idle well below the 850rpm mark. I can't start the car and run it without keeping my foot on the accelerator to keep the revs up. I've fudged a workaround by changing the position of the clip on the accelerator cable where it joins the injector unit. Though this means that the car sometimes idles about the 1200-1400rpm mark, once it has warmed up.

I believe the problem is likely to be caused by the stepper motor. Is this right, and if so how can I check it?

Any help appreciated.

John

PS

There doesn't seem to be many of ths type of car about, finding another stepper motor to try out is likely to be an expensive test.

I had until last year 1994 2.0GTX (80k miles) that had exactly the same problem. I did all the usual things (change filters, HT leads, plugs etc.) I took it to Peugeot who told me there was nothing wrong according to their computer, but suggested I replace the idle control valve / stepper motor. This I did for around £80. This made absolutely no difference - although the old one looked quite dirty. A fuel injection 'specialist' then suggested the problem was the engine management which had been upgraded 7 times by Peugeot since I bought the car. I upgraded this (£300) which made a small difference. I then replaced the vacuum hose to the MAP sensor because I was told this could be the problem. Again no difference. Finally I brought the Haynes Fuel Injection Manual. This said that with the Magnetti Marreli injection on these cars, if you turn the ignition on, wait for 30 seconds and then start the car, the idle speed is reset to the current throttle position. This did make a difference for a few weeks until it started playing up again. I then did the same again and it was OK for another few weeks. I came to the conclusion that the problem was probably the throttle position sensor, but I got rid of the car before doing anything more about it.

Have a feeling the clutch is about to go on my peugeot 405 STi 93 model, any advice as to whether this is a straight forward job, any problems to look out for?

My RWD Volvo 900 series estate, has a power lock differential;
if one wheel begins to lose tractions, the diff locks and so both wheels turn at the same speed.

It works very well, however as most other maunfacturers use limited slip systems, I can only assume that an LSD is better?

Can anyone point me to any website, or tech' data which compares the two systems.

Does anyone know what causes the system to engage ' disengage?

What a brilliant site!

Brought back happy(?)memories. My first car was a second hand Mini - dead reliable and heaps of fun. So I decided to buy a brand new one - went for a Clubman in fact. Aaargh, within a week it was back at the dealers with engine out to get syncromesh fixed. (Getting it into gear was 'interesting') Then the floor flooded and the battery split right across the top.I waited about a month for an ashtray for the front dash - it was delivered with a gaping tinny hole where the ashtray should have been.

After a couple of years or so I'd had enough. The clubman was p/exchanged for a new Renault 18. I've had Renaults and Citroens ever since - oh apart from a Riley Elf which I inherited from my sister. It lurks at the back of my garage. Mustn't speak ill of the dead though.

6 months ago I was shopping around for a new car, Thought I might try a test drive in a Rover 75 (diesel) I stood for almost an hour while the dealer tried unsuccessfully to find one for me to try. Just to make conversation, I asked him if the 75 had a 'common rail' diesel. He said he would have to go and find out (!!!) That did it, I ran all the way to the Citroen dealer.

Shame really, because the 75 is probably a fine car.......

Question Virus?
David Lacey

Guy has just rung me and told me he has recieved an email form Julian Lindley on here(??) and that mail contained a virus that has wiped his HDD. Don't know any more at this stage. He has just asked me to post here saying so.

Silly bu**er should have had some AVG software....serves him right if so...

Well, upon speaking to Guy earlier it appears it is the old favourite, the Java Debugger (Which he didn't open or act upon) that was the last mail he actioned before the PC hung and he had to restart it. Since then the PC will not detect his HDD!

Coincidence I think.

Oh well, it's off to the IT Dept tommorrow then, I take it?

Dear All

I am thinking of having the windows (side and rear) in my Scenic tinted. Any ideas how I can go about this? Do I need new windows or can the 'done' in some other way?

Question ZX Air Horn
Humpy

Has anyone ever taken apart a compressor for a ZX horn found on Volcane and top range models. My horn isn't working and, the compressor was making weird noises. I think the plastic vanes in the compressor have worn out, looking at them but I don't know what is normal. Now I know that this is academic because there are no repair packs and repair is replacement but I'm still interested!!
Thanks,

Humpy

Hee, hee! Sorry, reading back my post I suppose it's rather funny. To be honest I've had the car 18mths and 50000m,mostky on the motorway and I've hardly used the horn. It has passed the MOT once since I've had it but the other day I found it very hard to rouse some bird at the lights who was obviously colour blind or asleep. the only noise was what sounded like a wet fart as the horn feebly tried to react to my furious button pushing.
Humpy is short for Humphrey. Just a nickname from school, less of a mouthful and slightly amusing to boot!

Question Worn crankshaft
Buzby

I had a problem with my S reg 1.9 turbo diesel 306, the crankshaft pulley came loose. When I phoned the garage to find out how the repair was going I heard a mechanic tell the person I was speaking to that the engine was knackered. I asked what this was about and she said someone will call me back later.

They did call me to tell me that the pulley had worn the crankshaft away and that they would have to replace it for about £200.

When I collected the car today they said that they hadn't replaced the crankshaft but had filled the the chanell where the key sits with liquid metal and this will do the trick.

Will this repair last or is it just a blatant bodge to get me out the door. They incedentally fitted a new cambelt a few months back. is it possible that they didn't reasemble the bits properly and this inturn led to the damage.

In short do I have a case against them and if so, how would I go about it?

Many thanks

Jason

Many thanks for all your replies. Nice link Martin, made me feel a little better about the situation. Richard, no bolt has been added to either of the two invoices so I can only assume that they have reused the same one. I spoke to a mechanic who works at a Renault main dealers who said that it is not uncommon for them to do this sort of job without telling the customer. How many of us are driving about with these bodged up cars due to the incompetence of the garage?

I'm not going to take this any further with the garage as it is going to be difficult to prove. Unless the repair fails in which case I will try. I have been using this garage for 8 years now but they will not be getting any more business from me in the future.

Many thanks to all

Regards

Jason

Ploughing one's way through the dross in the papers today, concerning a middle-aged Englishman on business in SA and how he got back to his hotel, one finds an interesting statement. The lady who gave this chap a lift home had "drunk about 8 or so beers and then switched to white wine". If somebody is being investigated for some sort of alleged assault, shouldn't somebody else be investigated for drunken driving or isn't it against the law in SA? Read more

hey it could be worse!

"the penalties dished out here in Cairns, Queensland, are nothing compared to some other places around the world. In Bulgaria, if a person is caught drink driving for a second time they are executed. In El Salvador, South America, your first offence is your last courtesy of a firing squad. Malaysian authorities jail the driver and his wife if he is married. And in Japan, expect a hefty fine or 3 months to 2 years imprisonment with hard labour. "
