Help !!
I have just purchased a new car with a black metallic finish.
Everytime I wash and leather it ( no matter how carefully ) I find new scratch - some quite deep. Is this a normal problem with black metallic ?

This weeks autoexpress states that 18,000 1997-2000 Renault Megane, Scenic and Laguna 1.9 DTi are being recalled due to 'an engine fault' - any ideas what exactly the fault is??? Read more
Dragging up this old thread because I have a problem of my alternator belt, keeps shredding on my Megane Mk1 1.9Dti.
I understand that black coloured alternator pulleys are ok but the gold coloured ones are the problem ones. Looking on ebay many of the ones listed are gold, so are these safe. I would be very interestedto know what exactly is the problem with the problem pulleys? Which may help in finding a suitable replacement alternator..
Hi chaps,
The subject of warranties often seems to come up, how about letting us all know your experiences good (if any !) and bad ? Can we name names ? - the good, the bad and the ugly !- Read more
It depends entirely on the car and the warranty.
My father's Rover was very unreliable when bought at 4 years and 18k - the warranty was included in the price but would have been worth £800 for the year it ran, if we'd known at the time. Of course, the car caried on in that vein and we'd have been better off cutting our losses.
A warranty on a small, easy to repair, newer car will obviously be worth a lot less than one on a 10 year old V6, although you might get into the situation where a warranty would cost more than the car itself. Basically, you pays your money and you takes your choice.
Come on, own up. What affectionate or hurtful name(s) do you call your car and the reason?
Me, well here goes.
Shed. Austin Allegro. Reason:- it was one.
Goldie. Mk1 Astra EXP. Reason:- Colour 2 tone black & gold.
Wolf. Mk2 Cavalier. Reason:- Wolf in sheeps clothing. Looked bog standard but went like poo off a stick.
Shed 2. Another Mk2 Cavalier. Reason:- right bag of nails, but bought as temp vehicle when I pranged the Wolf.
Mud Mobile. Mk3 Cavalier. Reason:- Number plate had the letters MUD at the end. I know not very original.
Swampie. Another Mk3 Cavalier. reason:- Colour was Lagoon blue.
Vicky. Mk2 Vectra. Reason:- dunno really, guess Vicky Vectra has a ring to it!!

I resisted this topic for a while, then when it had attracted a number of replies, I wondered if some women might have posted. Oh well. [Not that I'm suggesting that they might not be equally tempted by a thread on choice of tyre brands].
My first car was a Reliant three wheeler with reg letters TTT.
I wasn't into giving cars names then - fortunatly perhaps.
My first proper car had reg OWL.
I called it "The Owl"
I'll get me coat.
Is there a known problem with the engine mounts with the 1.4 petrol? My dads 206 has had 5 or 6 sets of engine mountings, some only lasting a couple of months. The car is a 2000W model and owned from new. Peugeot keep saying there is a new design, but are they just poor.
Thanks

I have had problems with the RH (driver's side) engine mount on my 106D (Don't know if it's the same as the 206). In their Gallic wisdom, the rubber is in tension; the engine hangs off an inverted mount. Eventually it sags, and the engine bearer hits the chassis - splendid noises on a diesel. I didn't even bother with the dealer. Some washers under the mount and longer bolts have cured it, although I had to do this in two stages. It's been fine for the last year or so, raised about 3mm. Obviously a French wobbler - wonderful engines though.
As far as I know, the auto box fluid in my Omega GLS 2.0 16V hasn't been changed. The car is only 3 yrs old and has covered nearly 90,000 miles - probably mainly motorways. I noted in the Haynes manual they suggest replacing the auto box oil in high mileage vehicles after 3 yrs, but when I called Vauxhall they told me it isnt necessary to change it. So.. what do you all think? Should I get it changed, if so would it be expensive and what if I don't?
P.S. For those of you who followed my tyres thread, the car alas has 4 Pirelli P6000's shodding it's 4 corners. I haven't tried it yet other than a few hundred yards back to work on side streets, but already I feel that there's an improvement in tyre noise. By the way the new fronts are P6000's, I notice the rears are P6000 powergy, is there much difference? At least I feel safer in the knowledge I havent got 3 different brands on the car!

Vauxhall say that this transmission is life-time filled with a long-lasting oil, but it can be replaced every 70,000 miles if the vehicle is used as a Police car or taxi etc...
Obviously nothing lasts forever, and lifetime of what?
The same transmission was used in the Isuzi Trooper, some US Hondas and some BMWs and has a drain plug on some of these.
I'd change every couple of years for what it costs compared to a new autobox.
Hello chaps,I have just found your excellent and informative site while searching the web for an answer to my problem.
I have coolant leaking from somewhere under the dash and it is obvious from the smell and misting windscreen etc, that the matrix is leaking. My question is,how big a job is it to replace?
I am competant but if this is a " dash out job "I wont bother.
The car is a Laguna RXE 1997.
Oh yes,I dont know if it is connected, but I think the A/C has lost it's gas as it will not cool even though the compressor, etc is fine.
Any help would be appreciated !

Hi all,
Would appreciate any help you can offer on this. 98 Laguna Auto with a blocked heater matrix. The car still runs fine, but when the engine gets warm the SERV light illuminates and puts the gearbox into limp mode which is gear 2.4 and a max of about 60mph.
This occurs when I put the correct amount of coolant fluid into the system, however, with or without the blocked heater matrix, it seems to happen randomly and even then, when I remove some of the water from the cooling system, the car runs warmer but the SERV light doesn't come on.
Until I can fix this heater matrix, anyone got any ideas how to disable this stupid limp home mode? I've recently been hundreds of miles without this problem and suddenly it's back again. I did see an article a while ago that it is possible cut a wire under the air filter housing, joined to the auto trx. But I'm unsure which wire/s to cut. Anyone done this or heard about it?
I was going to just by-pass the heater matrix altogether but it's getting cold out there and I just want it fixed as it should be.
Would appreciate any help you can offer, many thanks...
I have noticed that diesel cars, when accelerating hard, often emit vast quantities of black smoke. Recently a BMW 320D and a Rover 220D (both fairly new) did this in the same line of traffic.
Is this normal or were these vehicles in need of adjustment?

Hi all again!
Since I am in the process of replacing either 2 or all 4 of my tyres, I've been searching the net to find out the best in terms of low noise tyres to fit my Vauxhall Omega. Size is 195/65/15 and so far I have narrowed the choice to the following:
Bridgestone SF411
Yokohamaha AVS dB
Kumho Ecsta HP4 716
Pirelli P6000
Does anyone have any experience of any of these brands, or recommend an alternative? Primary importance is low noise!
Regards

I have P6000s on my A4 225/45/17 and couldn't claim that they are quiet or not, but they are prone to tramlining probably due to the profile. However i have recently had both rears over the last 3 months punctured, one i had patched only to find two side wall bubbles appear after the tyre was refitted, the other was a right off.(both tyres nearly new!).
To me the tyres give an impression of weakness and i wouldn't recommend low profile tyres, they seem prone to side wall bubbles, on the last service a half worn front was found with a side wall bubble on the inside wall.
Over 3 years and 17,000 miles i have had 5 punctures and two tyres with side wall bubbles, perhaps i have been unlucky?

However, I?ve often wondered about screen washer bottles. They?re never cleaned, are kept nice and warm in the engine compartment, and contain an algae soup which is sprayed around in city centres by the washer jets and atomized by the water?s impact with the screen. Does anyone have any thoughs on this? Will UV sterilization become a legal necessity?
I don't like to say I told you so (as my wife often says) but I did, about eight years before the HSE recognised that windscreen washer bottles were a hazard....
me too - I've a dark green metallic Laguna - the paint must be less than 0.00000000000000000001 microns thick! is this Renault cost cutting ? After the initial paranoia I decided the best option was not to look too closely. Local discount shop was selling Simonitz Liquid Diamond at £1.95 for a big tin - seems to do a pretty good job.
