For a few brief weeks we see these unstable plastic lumps. At least the Reliants do not spoil the view when parked. However the caravans either end up in small front gardens or get in huge numbers in Caravan sites storage areas nose to tail. There is a plague of them near the A12 at Colchester. Why is there is no MOT or tax on them yet? Read more

The tax is a 30 to 50% increase in fuel consumption. That's if you drive at reasonable speeds.

Question OMEGA HELL
tgmnewry

I purchased a 1996 Vauxhall Omega 2.5CDX Petrol in January. The car was brought for a good price as it had an oil leak from the engine and needed new brake discs, pads etc. I had I checked over by a local car trader who told me it was sound, but would also need the plug leads replaced.
With this information I left the car to a mechanic, and entrusted him with the work. He seemed unsure how to do the work, as it involved removing the timing belt on the engine.
To cut a long story short, which involved at least 40 phonecalls to him, and at least 8 temporary cover notes (costing 15pounds each) I finally took the car back. He had more or less given up on my job, and I had to spend a very miserable Saturday replacing various pulleys etc which he had left in a box in the boot.
The car barely ran at that stage and in desparation it was was entrusted to a Vauxhall Dealer, who after 650pounds of work, having replaced several
sensors, decided to carry out a compression test. They concluded valve damage and a almost total loss of compression across one bank of the engine.
Showing 100k they told me the engine now was scrap and not worth repairing, or at least not at their Garage rates. They told me the mechanic I had gone to had done the damage.

How do I stand legally with this.
I have contacted my solicitor who tells me that it is free in the small claims court to take such a case, but was not too helpful about what exactly I should claim for.
I contacted the mechanic, and he seemed willing at the start to help, though once he heard from me that a second hand replacement engineis needed which costs about 1000pounds excluding fitting he changed his mind. I am once again resorting to withholding my number in an effort to talk to him, (as I had done many times over the past few months when he had promised to have the car ready, and never took a spanner near it.
Help would be GREATLY appreciated Read more

Inform the mechanic that you will be going to the local press. He may not be bothered about court, but if all his trade dries up, then he may start to do something about it.

Good Luck

Question Leaking Primera
Carl

I have just noticed that I have a very minor oil leak on my 98 Primera (Turbo Diesel) 72K miles

The oil feed for the vacuum pump from the block consists of a long pipe, mostly made of metal, but with two short plastic sections. In two areas, oil is beginning to seep past where the plastic section is crimped to the metal. One area does not look too bad, but the only has evidence of very minor dripping

Does anybody have any idea how much I am likely to pay for a new hose?, I can bet that it will be a main dealer job. I am tempted to leave it, but keep an eye on it, but is this wise, I am looking to drive arround France for three weeks this summer and would hate for it to fail there. Read more

Carl

I am not sure, I'll be calling at a Nissan dealer first thing on Tuesday Morning, my one fear is being stuck on a French motorway with split hose and / or seized engine

Sue

My idle valve seems to have had a nevous breakdown!

Having fitted a second hand one, followed by a new one my engine still surges like there's a ghost in the car with its foot on the throttle. When it's not surging the revs drop so low the engine cuts out (scary when negotiation a turn!). Periodically rather than surging or cutting out the revs can go sky high as though the throttle cable is stuck, the only way to bring it back down is to engage the clutch.

Neither a local mechanic or a mobile tuner have been able to help.
Has anyone out there had similar problems or have any solutions? Read more

One would hope that after 16 months (original post May \'02) Sue would have got this sorted by now.

ps, I amended your text to \'sentence case\' as typing soley in CAPITALS is considered rude, as it comes across that you are shouting.

My ex partner has just bought a brand new last of the line peugeot 106, with the 1.1 litre engine. Although she has got a good deal I am rather suspicious of the service intervals quoted, 2 years or 20000 miles. Surely this is the same engine that required intervals of 9000 miles post 94 and 6000 prior to this, or have peugeot tweaked it some more to make this viable? Seems like an extra selling gimmick to me. Read more

The PSA 1.1 engine is a fairly old design and will eat its camshaft and followers if you only change the oil every 20K. They get rattly enough even with more regular oil changes. I would guess that Peugeot are using long life spark plugs and hoping the first owner only keeps the car for 3 years or so. With modern plugs and synthetic oil they could quote a 40,000 mile service interval and the car would still be running at the first service, but it probably wouldn't last long enough to need a second one.....

HJ advised the Mercedes driver

"Try to get it for about £13,000. You can then charge your company 40p per mile up to 10,000 miles and 20p per mile thereafter - total £7,000, tax free."

He can't demand that amount from the company. For example my company pays a fixed allowance for a car plus 12p per mile for fuel etc.

He can however claim tax relief for these amounts, If he is a 40% tax payer this is still a considerable amount.

If he receives, for example 12p per mile tax free then he can still claim remaining tax relief for 28p to 10,000 and 8p for the remainder.

I had to go on self assessment to gain the benefit of the tax relief quickly, otherwise you need to wait at least until the end of the tax year to get the entitlement. Read more

I agree that it has changed recently.

It seems that the driver who averages 10,000 is quids in. Especially if his company pays him the full 40p

THe Growler

"Threats at gunpoint are not rare," Jean-François Verdier told a press conference at the Ministry of Transport in Paris, "and other attacks have included physical assault, damaged vehicles, arson and threats of rape and murder. Candidates who have failed their driving test before sometimes arrange for their friends to meet them at the end of the exam, so they can all attack the examiners and their cars together if they fail again. That?s why we?ve decided to introduce a twenty-four-hour cooling-off period for all learner drivers, before they find out whether or not they?ve passed their test."
Verdier, a transport ministry official, was speaking about a driving test system that was introduced in parts of France last year, and may soon become nationwide policy. "Attacks on examiners are common here, because most candidates fail their driving test first time. It?s not unusual for them to take it eight or ten times before they pass, and many French people don?t like it when the authorities keep frustrating their ambitions. But in those parts of the country where the candidates are not informed of the result until the next day, the number of assaults has greatly decreased. That?s why we?re thinking of extending that policy throughout France, although quite a lot of our examiners say that they?re still being threatened and attacked, even after the cooling-off period has ended." The SITUATION:

Cross roads with the minor road running North ? South, major road East ? West.

On the minor road usually several cars queuing on both sides. Some cars want to turn right onto major road e.g. those heading North going East, those heading South go West.

Others simply want to cross over the main road e.g. continue heading South or North.

The PROBLEM

Some think that if they are just crossing the main road they have priority over those wanting to turn right. Some turning right disagree ? they believe that by joining the main road they have priority.

Where both want to turn right across each other, often both think they have priority.

I appreciate that the sensible solution is to take it in turns in a ?after you Claude? manner ? but life unfortunately is not like that. One timid driver can be stuck for several minutes while all those coming in the opposite direction did their thing. Like the lady I was behind tonight!!!!

The QUESTION

Who has priority?

Stevie
PS
Asked my boss - who uses the same route. His view was that in the morning those heading North have priority, in the evening those heading South. Guess if he lives South or North of our workplace. Read more

In my part of the world, certain drivers get round the problem of priority at night by switching off the headlights as they approach a crossroads in the lanes.

If they see no other lights approaching then it's perfectly OK to press on without stopping or slowing down - until they meet someone else doing the same thing that is ....

Just seen these two on Alistair McGowan?s show, absolutely brilliant. Quentin Wilson was done to a T or is that done up like a kipper?

My Golf is a diesel. First registered 1 Jan 1990. It has the 1.6 'Umvelt' engine [i.e. not enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding] and has a micro turbo to clean the burn .... says the handbook [turbo certainly doesn't deliver any ooomph].

It also has a catalyser. But the exhaust is now blowing, at the joint with the cat. Garage man says "Can't weld a cat". So do I need the cat? I seem to recall a thread which said that cars older than a certain date did not require them - but my serach of old threads didn't turn it up.

Anone know the definitive answer, please? Read more

Andrew Moorey (Tune-Up Ltd.)

Junk the cat if you wish. Also disconnect and plug the vacuum line to the EGR valve on the onlet manifold, this will give you a bit more ooomph.
