Hi
My daughter is at uni and her two year old Seat Arosa spends much of its time parked outside, We do run it for her on some short trips. How can we prevent the engine from wearing due to limited use..any type of oil etc.
thanks

In an attempt to get back to normal.....
I read today (browsing in Tesco) that Top Gear magazine names the BMW 3 series as best executive car, calling it 'near perfect'. Is it really that good? My experiences with a E30 320i and a friend's problems with a E36 318i weren't that confidence inspiring. Nice looking cars but not that reliable.
Is this new model the all-conquering motor it's cracked up to be? I've never driven one (went for the Audi at a better price!), so I'd value comments.

The threes are jolly good until you need a touring, when the rear space is really very limited indeed.
The fives have more space, but the packaging is pathetic in terms of internal space to external overall size.
And the bloody boots still are not deep enough!
And theyre all unbuyable secondhand.Whatever the spec or condition or mileage, everyone thinks their car is worth Glasses retail or more, and they aint, really they aint, since Glasses values are unrealistic to start with.
I wasted some time last year,looking for a 5 series touring,current shape,any engine but the 2 litre,in a sensible colour,and with aircon as a must.leather and Auto nice,and worth a bit more.It needed to be 15k,and with sensible ,but not low,mileage.
Found loads of rocking horse droppings, but no contenders.
Is this really necesary? Some ones spoiling the forum.

My C5 2l HDi has the worst rear suspension rattle I have heard from a Citroen,
The 'Fix' I am told is to attach a weight to the rear suspension. Anybody know anything about this problem ?. Read more
Hi John
Further enquiries with the franchise dealer has revealed that the C5 suspension rattle is one of 9 recently recalls issued by Citroen to the dealers.
I have received this week, from Citroen, a notice of recall for a possible fault with the front wheel bearings that could lead to malfunction of the ABS. The other 8 recalls are classed as 'Quality issues'. I have experienced two of these quality issues, namely intermittent non-operation of the remote dead lock and waterpouring into the boot when the tailgate is raised after rain. ( a fault inherited from the Xantia and the Bx.)
What I cannot understand, is why Citroen have not notified C5 owners of all these recalls, perhaps they hope owners will just put up with these problems, thus saving Citroen having to examine and possibly rectify 100s of vehicles.
Hope you can shine some light on these issues.

Has anybody experienced exploding plug leads and resulting small engine fire which I had on my Audi Coupe- luckily at slow speed and blown out! This serves as a warning to renew leads of unknown age? Read more
Sorry, my grammar is awful. That last post was meant to indicate that the impurities in water conduct electricity but not the water.
It's got to stop.
For years, I've gone about my business blissfully ignorant of many of the things lots of you know all about.
For the millionth time I today left home in the car; howling gale, pouring rain, appointment at hospital in ten minutes. For the millionth time I stopped half a mile from home to pick up a paper, ran back to the car, got in and froze.
Oh Lord, its not going to start. THE BACK ROOM SAYS IT MAY NOT RESTART in these circumstances. It did, just like the previous 999,999 times.
Why? What is different about my car? I should be told.

sorry i made a mistake, i meant to say that i am NOT andrew or steve paterson.
Does anyone know the general principles of how the EDC works on the new Vectras (Oct 2000 onwards) I can see that its not a common rail system but it looks like a hybrid mechanical system with electronic Knock sensors in the head and injection that has an electronic primary fuel pulse to cancel noise followed by the main injection pulse. Is this correct ?
Reason I ask is mine has an irritating problem and I cannot convince the main dealer that there is anything wrong with it. When cold it is wonderfully smooth and one would doubt its a diesel and most of the time when warm its excellant. But about 5 minutes in every hour it looses the plot and sounds horrible, just like the very first DI transits. Its running on all cylinders when this happens and there is no smoke. Its just as if whatever injection trickery they fitted electronically to cancel the noise that Direct injection diesels make has been teporarily turned off ! Has anyone heard of this problem ? Read more
Andrew, There is no warning light showing, cars only done 10k so I would have thought an injector problem is unlikley. Do you know if there is an engine temperature feed to the EDC system as this might be the problem ? It seems odd to have a diesel that is quieter when cold than when warm !
I have heard of the problem of the air sensor but no-one has clarified what symptoms to look for if this is faulty.

Have a look around the accessory shops for a product called FX-1 or ZX-1. This is a treatment for the engine (not an oil additive) which in simple terms forms a microscopic, semi-permanent, film on bearing surfaces reducing wear. It should prevent the initial wear starting up after a lay off.
I am aware that this may be construed as a "snake oil" product but I have personal evidence of its worth and I use it in every car I have owned.
I would however not use it in the Arosa unless it has more than 20-25k on the clock so as not to interfere with the running in process.
