Car 99 Vreg 2.0 DTi
Turn the key and all the lights come on and go off as normal.
Engine starts OK, after 4/5 seconds idling MIL comes on and stays on until you give the throttle a meaty prod after which it stays off.
Other symptoms, engine seems flat, esp at lowish revs, and fuel consumption up.
So far dealer has confirmed there is a fault and has tried tightening up all the turbo hose clips.
Where next?
Air flow sensor?
Any other sensor?
Multiplug or other loom fault? Read more

These cars always seem to have their original plug leads when I have looked at them. But when people do replace them with cheap aftermarket items they forget that the plugs now need the little screw on tops that are not required for the original leads. This may not cause a huge problem until something else is slightly out and then the problem will be eggagerated.
Please let us know how you get on. I have had lots of experience with these engines.

Top of the class Keith, new set of leads and it's off a blinder, for future reference, any bright ideas how to test HT leads at home (ie without too much fancy kit).

We have a 98 Golf TDi estate and have lost the first key. Still have the spare but thought it would be a good idea to get another. Just phoned the supplying local VW dealer; first we have to take the car to them, then they interrogate the electronic brain; then they fax to VW Miton Keynes - who fax VW Germany. FAx comes back with the order code for the key. The dealer then orders the key. Once it has arrived they require the car for another 1/2 day to "progamme" the key(s).
So, 2 visits (mon to fri only of course) and a bill of £40 for the key plus 1/2 hr labour for programming.
The service receptionist was very cheerful about it all - lucky you don't have a FIAT sir, it would cost you £1,000.
Is there an easier way to get a new key? Read more
Thanks I had better get on and order the new key.
I have checked out the procedure to get a new key for my e class Mercedes(VW is my wifes car). Phone merc dealer with chassis number, wait approx 4 days and collect new key - with remote locking total bill about £45-50.
I always wondered what use cup holders were - on the motorway this morning, I glanced across (enviously) at a lovely S class Mercedes and noticed the driver was busy cleaning his teeth! And no we weren?t stuck in traffic at the time!! Read more

Been away for a few days and was a little surprised at the reaction to the ?High Mileage Bores? post. To put the record straight I wasn?t having a dig at the zillion mile bangernomic enthusiasts. Simply at those advocating this as the only route to motoring Utopia and then being frankly insulting to anyone with the temerity to contemplate buying a new car.
What makes this forum so compelling is the diverse opinions of the contributors. The downside comes from those who cannot accept that others hold different opinions.
Personally I missed not having a post from Mark (Brazil) who I expected to contribute a lengthy and informative dissertation on South American Izal.

Sorry if I offendered anybody.
what started out as a mere jest has turned into a pun-fest.
I hope martyn will soon put a block on this, before it comes to a head.
I'm broken half-shafted about the trouble I wrought.

Our office cleaner is having her Mk 3 Golf gearbox rebuilt by a local "specialist", but he seems to have been at it a fortnight with no sign of finishing as yet.
I recently had a pop at Lee Hurst whom I unfairly described as a "failed comedian". I would like to withdraw that remark; it had more to do with my state of mind at the time while selling my business than anything else. Read more

Nearly right Rob (Although there may be fans which work on heating/cooling the liquid or gel). Really, it's the heating and cooling effect on the bi-metallic sensing coil which, in turn, opens or closes a port, between the two fan chambers, therebye giving drag or slippage
Hi All,
I have a '94 Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 (Ecotech) CDX, which cuts out very intermittently. Usually its while ideling, but sometimes happens while driving. It never happens if Im travelling over, say, 35 mph, and seems to be worse when the fuel level is below 1/4.
I've taken it to Vauxhall, and they said it needed new idle air control valve, throttle body mod, oil sump on the breather hose etc, so Ive had it all done and its still the same. Vauxhall now reckon its my immobiliser!?! Somehow I cant see it being this.
The previous owner had a new engine block fitted as a piston went through the side of the engine, however the new engine has also inhereted the same 'cutting out' problems.
Any help would be great, Ive had the car about a year now and its driving me insane. Somedays it can be fine, where others it can cut out about 5 times. I have to wait for the orange 'engine managment light' to come on before it will start again, or else the start motor goes, but the engine wont fire up. Sometimes it can take 5-6 turns of the key to get this light to show before the car starts, usually after its cut out. First thing in a morning its starts fine, first turn, every time.
Regards

Hi All,
Ive changed the fuel relay, with no results. Still the same. Next job is to change the ignition switch I think, but surely this will only fix (if anything) the thing with having to turn the key loads of times?
I'll get some Redex too, and try that.
Ive already changed all the hoses which run across the top of the radiator, so I know its not that (thanks for the suggestion anyway).

Some good advice a week or so on this site about the value of metalic paint on a new car. I was wondering what leather seats on an Audi A4 or A6 did for the resale. I do like the comfort of leather ( easy to fidget in on a long run - the synthetic cloth seats grip like velcro). However it costs £1500 extra. Any thoughts?

Thanks to all,
its a lease car and money spent on DIY repairs is not refunded (not even light bulbs!) and could also lead to complications, so its back to the dealer armed with more info.
