February 2002
Having just cleaned the inside of my Audi (a job I hate), I've discovered that those moist wipes (not the baby's bum sort but the ones impregnated with some sort of spirit cleaner) are brilliant for cleaning windows and plastic bits. Also ideal for those 'forgotten' areas such as the edge of doors, sill steps, etc.
I get them from a 'pound' shop -really cheap but very effective. Also useful around the house (am I really writing this!).
Incidentally, took my MB190E to the local jetwash (felt a bit lazy) this morning and I pulled up into the 'bay' only to notice that the machine was not there, just a couple of pipes sticking out of the ground. I asked at the petrol station kiosk if it was going to be replaced and the lady said a new one was on order, necessary because a punter had driven off with some hose still attached to his vehicle and pulled the whole thing off!
How I love Sunday mornings!
Keep 'em clean

My '93 Corsa is no longer showing the external temperature on the radio display, it shows --.- ! I found the sensor at the front behind the number plate. It seems to have a dc resistance of about 30 ohms, but it was 70ohms at one point. It does not seem to chnage over even when I put it in the fridge.
I have also measured the voltageon the cable 4.5V so there does at least seem to be some connection back to the display.
Has anyone done similair tests? Do they think I am looking at a new sensor or is it something wrong with the display?
Any help or suggestions for further tests would be gratefully received.
Thanks

when i heard that people were thinking i was 'andrew' i had to come back to tell people the truth.
(i heard from a backroomer, who emailed me)
I have been given an old Maestro free for the kids to learn to drive on. My part of the deal is that I have to MOT it and sell the number plate NPC 1L. I have absolutely no idea what to ask. I was thinking of £500 because it's a round number. I don't suppose anyone has any idea of what I should ask. I don't want to advertise too high as I want to get rid of it. Most of them seem to ask silly money. I propose to use LOOT. Any experience by others gratefully received. Read more
Richard,
Why not look in the business phone book section (or any other source of small-medium business names) and find some that fit the initials....then cold call satrting at £500.
Might just see it on a Merc up the industrial estates in a month or so.

I've had my curent car for over two years now. Put the spare on receently after a puncture - it's hardly worn.
However its 165 and all the other are 185
Certainly the rims {Volvo alloys} look the same.
Will the narrower tyre cause any probs?
Certainly I've not noticed any.
Thanks

John S is right, the spare wheel is not a testable item - as long as it's not fitted as a roadwheel. Problem is, many spare wheels will be used as roadwheels at some time, and will be subject to the relevant regs.
i was wondering if anybody has had the idea of a meet for the backroomers, i thought we could all (yes i would like to come) have a meet, and look at each others cars, have a talk, and then go to the pub (for non alcoholic drinks, of course).
what do you think?? Read more
Chris, Sounds like you better bring a crash hemet and wear a life jacket!
Ian, It's a small world!
Those who hate to read about VFM motoring please stop now.
SWMBO now has a new (to us) and remarkable 1989 Polo 1.3 Ranger, you know the sort you see about driven by a pensioner just taking the vicar out for tea on Sunday.
Hardly a mark inside or out and about the cost of a bag of chips.
Anyway I noticed on the 89 Polo stalling thread a comment on fuel tank vacuum and breather hoses. Yep you've guessed it the thing takes about ten minutes to get a couple of gallons in without blowing back. It had a brand new VW tank fitted a couple of weeks ago for the MOT. What have I got to do, new breather pipe? Pig to get to??
Thanks,

It would appear that in addition to the usual low pressure light this one has an overpressure light as well. Never quite got to the bottom of that one!
BTW Peter, interested that you have lost money with these. We find quite the reverse!
I drive a T reg Vectra and find the power steering "growls" for about ten minutes after a cold start. Is this normal for a Vectra ? Read more
No!
Quentin Willson writes in the Daily Mirror today about owning a 500SL for a year with no depreciation cost
Phil P writes in th Backroom about losing £3.7K in eight months on a Focus
Do I assume that QW had special circumstances and if so what was the point of his article.
Do I also assume that Phil P's depreciation cost is par for real world values.
Any depreciation evasion stategies please Back roomers
Bangernomics is one answer but I fear the unreliabilty and multi viewing involved.
Churning is another but how to do it

Quentin is a dealer so he buys at Trade and sells at Retail hence no depreciation.
If you can screw down the buy price for yourself then you'll have the same effect.
No fewer than 10 car mfrs advertising in today's DT magazine. Is this a record?
Mind you, it's a pleasant change from those endlessly repeated articles about some alleged celeb you've never heard of and are unlikely to hear of ever again. Read more
What about the rest of the Mail then? ;)
