Martyn,
Why does the Car-by-car breakdown page not work correctly? When I put in a make of car the drop down menu works ok, so I put in say Toyota, the model menu however will only show the Avensis. I click on show and the Avensis comes up, but the model menu now expands to show all of the Toyota range so then I can click the model I really want to look at. It happens for all makes on the first time I open the Car-by-car breakdown page. I know its not a lot, but it would be easier if it opened the model menu in total first time. I use Communicator 4.7.
Thanks

Well. Turn my back for a minute and this is what we get. Just read it in time before it was lost in the Older Messages ether. And I'm damned if I'm letting this get lost in the same place.
For the record: I understood my diesel well enough. I drove it superbly. It wasn't me the other day who tried to drive a car without deactivating the immobiliser and insisted it wouldn't start, it was my son. It was me, however, who sorted out all the problems with my current car because I knew when I was being spun a line, and asked all the right questions. So there.
Don't do it again. I'm watching you. Read more
> PS: And I'm so clever the first time I posted this it was halfway down the original thread.
So how did you do that then ? And you're not counted as clever if you enlisted Martyn's help. On the off chance that you managed to wake him up, that is. Assuming you did speak to Martyn, did you ask him which version of phorum software we are using and why ?

p.s. I know, I know. The Line/This side/Other Side - I'm thinking of setting up camp there.
Rather than what has not been seen, what about reports on what has? I don't get about so much as a lot out there but I saw a Hillman Minx, about a 1500 or 1600 I would guess, last week. I had one once, and it had one great feature for its time; the heater output temperature varied immediately and exactly with the control movement as soon as the car was hot.
There are one or two Minors in everyday use around Dundee, one as a pickup.

I also saw one lately, but I cant remaember whether it was in France or England!
The gearbox in our four month old Yaris is emitting a high pitched whine at certain r.p.m. This was diagnosed by Toyota as a Manufacturing defect but two months later we are still no nearer obtaining a repair due to lack of parts. We are told by the dealership that another customer has had the same problem since October 2000 and that parts are still not available to repair his vehicle. Has anyone experienced similar problems?

Following advice(including your oblique recommendation), my mum's also picking up a new 10.L GS later on this month. Keep you posted on the various whines that ensue...

Its the B3 rating that matters.
You can get B3 deisel specific from Auchan in France, fully synth. for about nine quid per 5 litres.
What we all await is the B5 stuff, anyone any info?
Whilst I'm on this.......if any of you are so idle and stupid as to have your cars unserviced by a franchised dealer.......make sure you supply the oil.
That way you dont pay about thirty quid for five quids worth of oil and you know whats in the sump...........possibly.
Doesnt appy to VW PD engines,or first services, arguably the worse the oil is for the first 20,000 miles the better.
assuming you dont do less tan 20,000 miles a year, that is.
If you DO,then,two points:
a)Its cheaper by taxi
b)you are not driving enough to maintain core competence at the wheel.

here's a funny thing, on starting up my engine (3.9 petrol, 1991 vintage) there seems to be a "windy" noise which increases in volume/pitch with the revs. Girlfriend claims not to notice anything different, but ah! I know about these things. (Paranoia over engines, that is.)
Could it be the fan has decided to start up as soon as the engine starts? I thought it did that anyway. Have I got a leaky gasket maybe? The exhaust fumes are clear, not white or black, and performance seems normal.
I might take it to Landranger services in Atherton, great for advice, but parts a bit pricey. (Compared to my favourite scrapyard) Read more
I dont wish to be gratutously objectionable, but why dont you take the whole sorry mess to the scrapyard?
I,ve always thought that the concept and David Bache styling of the Range Rover to be absolutely seminal.
I have also thought that everything else about the vehicle to be utterly abysmal to the point of beleiving that it must be wilful.
It has a superb(for its day-long past) v8 engine,pointlessly spavined.
An excellent long travel suspension concept limited by bloody cart axles,
a perfectly rigid,if a bit angular,body design,plonked on a crude ladder frame
that belongs to the 1930's.
I know WHY it was done that way(cost) but that doesnt mean it was right, and it certainly doesnt mean we should revere it,even if noboby can be arsed to do it much better.
Except,possibly,BMW?
It appears to me that the Land-Rover dealers I am looking at have Discos without service histories up to date (in one case the most recent service hasn't been done and it is 9k overdue) but they are being marketed as FSH.
In all cases, FSH equates to the stamped book rather than any supporting documentation.
In certain cases the cars have problems that will need to be rectified before sale, yet they are on the forecourt - and I am sure that had I not spotted the problems, they would not have been pointed out.
This is undermining my confidence in the L-R dealers concerned. Am I alone in feeling this way? Does FSH merely mean a stamped LR book, or would you interpret it as being a set of invoices too? Read more
My advice would be steer away from any Land Rover. The latest Discovery is just as unreliable as any of it's forebears, with the addition of extra electronic half baked trickery, I've spent the last two years running backwards and forwards to my dealer.
If anybody is considering a Defender Tomb Raider they should read the latest edition of LRM, where the list of rectification works needed to a new one would make you weep.
LRs are for company car owners and 2nd car playthings for the rich. If you are neither of these, they will break your heart. If you must have one, as suggested, buy a noisy rattley and rusty (they all are) 200tDi. At least you can fix it yourself on weekends.
From a now very satisfied Landcruiser owner. RIP Land Rover, all that's left is the name.
I think I have enough from Tesco, ... but it may be of some interests for some backroom readers.
After find out my insurance policy has been terminated without my knowledge, they promised to reinstate it for me. Well, to my amazement, I received a letter from Tesco to state that they cancel my breakdown assistance coverage at MY REQUEST, etc. I was on the phone for almost an hour and no one, including the Manager, can explain what this is all about to me. The Manager even said that the letter was sent out earlier before received my phone call on Monday, ?, but I told her the letter stated explicitly that the insurance policy is reinstated but the breakdown assistance coverage has been cancelled at my request! I suggest to fax her all the relevant documents to proof that I am not lying, she just told me the same answer again and again, ? (one of her colleagues told me that they sent me 5 letters before terminate my policy ? suddenly 3 more letters appeared out of nowhere within 3 days!!!).
The manager even told me that my policy has been terminated on the same day that I called them, what a coincidence! Martyn & others are right - their administration & customer service is "excellent", so "well" that you can't ask for more!
I eventually decided to terminate my policy since I don?t know what will happen next indeed. I have to pay more for the new policy but I don?t want to worry about driving without insurance, etc. Read more

Direct Line have a similar policy for own fault accidents.
The answer is to get yourself a quote from a local garage who provides
a "free" courtesy car.
Note the quotes around "free" as the insurer will usually end up paying in
the end.

I was just having a chat with a friend at work, and the subject of Austin Allegros came up. This led on to a more general discussion about cars which were once an everyday sight, but have quietly disappeared from our roads without anyone really noticing. If these cars were animals, they would be on the endangered species list....
1. Even-numbered Renaults (4, 6, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 30)
2. Austin Maxi
3. Talbot Alpine and Solara
4. Fiat 131 Mirafiori
5. Citroen GS
Some of these could be down to a few dozen roadworthy survivors by now. (And good riddance, I hear you say.) I can't really see anyone bothering to weld up and respray an old Talbot Alpine or Renault 14 - could these cars actually end up extinct? Read more

Hi guys, my company is offering one of the families private cars for sale, so one owner, Peugeot 106 1.4 XRD 3 door, FSH, metallic green, 127000 miles, Jan 1994 on an L, 12 months MOT, no tax. How much is it worth? What will it do to the gallon? Any major issues with these cars, I know nothing about Pugs except they have a wheel at each corner?
Also the mother in law has on old Polo coupe on a B plate with less than 30K on it, again owned from new, 4 speed box, serviced every 12 months or so no rust (that can be seen) any ideas on a price for this?
She is also looking for a new smaller car than the Golf they currently have (they are a VW family). As they are both getting on a bit I have suggested the Yaris Verso for ease of use (getting in and out of), reliability and general VFM rather than go to a Polo again or Lupo. Any thoughts on this suggestion?
Thanks in advance,

these Polos will run forever - We had Y reg one in the family recently and the only thing not right was a slight oil leak into the distributor. the 1300 cc coupe is reasonably quick too. you should ask £395 - as for the pug, although there is no room for anyone over 5'8 ask for £ 1195

Ditch Communicator. Many sites don't work properly with it (including mine!), and as a side issue, I found that installing it scuppers both microsoft fax and Outlook, as the installation replaced some Microsoft files with Netscape versions.
I used to use it, but found the downsides unacceptable, so it's recently been removed.
