I notice increasing numbers of cars, and motorbikes especially, with tinted headlights, in blue, green, or purpley-pink.
They are very confusing - are they legal?

I think they come from Taiwan and also from Japan -- they are all over here in the Philippines. Purple, red, orange, you name it. Any color for any light. We also have colored lights dancing round license plate frames, anyone can buy a Kojak style red or blue rotating police lamp (about 8 quid). LInking a set of flashing lights up to the bass in the car's boombox is another neat one. Strobe lights round the rad grille are popular too, purple seems to be the favorite. Not surprising therefore that some have found their way to UK. Another quirk is to drive without any lights whatever. Large semi-trailers frequently do this. Often cars' head or sidelights don't work, in which case leaving one flasher on all the time is quite normal.

There aren't any MOT's and I've never heard of anyone being stopped for non-standard lights. Usually the traffic enforcer is more interested in some imaginary offence he can extract "tong" for (a bribe). Fascinatingly, if you fdail to be nice to the enforcer, he can give you a ticket for Arrogance! True.

If you think I'm exaggerating come and visit us in the friendly Philippines!!

I bought a new Seat Leon 1.6S in April. It soon became apparent that rain water is getting into the car through the door panels. The Dealsership have had three chances to sort it but only made matters worse! They had the car for 5 full days and not only made the water problems worse but damaged the interior. Has anyone had similar problems? Has anyone ever managed to get a car replaced under the Sale of Goods Act? The water problem is serious! Read more

My Leon (New September 2000) also leaked water through (at various times) three of the four doors. They're all fixed now after several visits to the dealer who cures it by sealing the joint between the door inner panel and the door proper. There is a gasket but it's rather ineffectual ! Other VWs are a similar design but don't seem to suffer the same problem.

A friend (the only person I know who owns a Leon) has had the same problem.

HOWEVER my car still leaked water in (not through the doors) in heavy rain, soaking the front passenger footwell. Dealer reckons this was around the pollen filter housing and has now sealed it. It was only this Tuesday gone so I'm waiting to see if it's worked.

The wear indicator warning system [1] on my Rover 414 brake pads went off today.

I shall be popping new ones on tonight. It looks simple enough but does anyone have any words of warning/advice?

Thanks in advance.

Fair point. I'm pretty cautious though. And there's always the handbrake.

A colleague of mine has been caught speeding in the West Midlands. £60 Fixed Penalty Fine and NO points on his licence (he didn't have to hand it in).
Sounds strange to me or have the rules changed to a more continental system? Read more

I think your freind is telling you porkies.

If I recall correctly, Plod takes your Driving Licence if he issues a FPT for speeding so that the points can be entered and Licence sent back to you.

Something wrong somewhere. Don't tell C/Supt Roberts, Clevepol..........

Tucked away in the schedules on Channel 4 at 9-10pm tonight is a programe "To drive for" (don't suppose it'll have Nicole Kidman). It is billed as a celebration of 50yrs (why 50yrs??) of motoring with early clips from the start of popular motoring.

If any good it ought to cover the formative period many of us here go back to (codgers all). And it follows Top Gear, possibly with less sideways/VBH action.

No posts on the forum 8.30-10.00 then?

What a waste! A typical shallow effort. Its chronological approach would have lent itself well to an in-depth 4 or 6 part series which could have taken a good look at motoring history and changing attitudes. Ah well.....

Continuing from the "where has the older messages button gone".....

Very very odd. Up late last night and "marked all read" before leaving. Now this morning there are half a dozen showing "New" but in fact there aren't any new contributions on those threads.

Also the thread counter is all over the place.

If you do a search for "Micheldever Tyres" specifying 90 days period, you will get all the answers you want. Micheldever is owned by the Todd family - no relation.

Hello Mark,

If anything happens, please keep us posted; we need something of interest on here!

Supra is in the pipeline, by the way, but nobody wants to know about that?

Excuse the novice question but can anyone explain the difference between Tiptronic and the normal Auto box ?
For instance, can a Tiptronic be set in auto drive and left to it ?
Thanks for your help. Read more

It's what you are used to. On bikes, right-hand change, down for up was second nature to me (they had it wrong on Triumphs). On my retirement bike (a Yamaha Turbo of ludicrous weight) the brake and change were of course on the wrong side as well; I managed, except when flustered, as with a 38-tonner up my tail at a roundabout or the anti-motoring fuzz behind (I suppose I am permitted to just mention the dear chaps?); then the conditioning of old tended to take over, which could be awkward.

I have been offered an N reg 540 Touring, 95,000 miles, full main dealer history from new. The price is about £5,000. It has leather and air. Does anyone have any opinion as to whether I should buy it? Am I letting myself in for trouble, or not. It goes very well. Thanks. Read more

a mate had one from new in about 97 - he sold it after a very short time because of poor reliability and appalling service from arrogant BMW dealers
