I'm thinking about buying a new 1.2 Clio Expression + Five-door, and would be grateful to hear from anyone who has any advice, e.g.
Local dealer (Portsmouth) has a published list price of £8950 for the five-door - should I expect to get any discount from this and/or some sort of deal on optional extras such as metallic paint?
Renault's build quality reputation hasn't been too good in the past, but the models we've test-driven appear to stand up well enough to the competition (Corsa, Fiesta, Micra) - is this true in others' experience?
Any other advice?
Thanks in advance. Read more
I would be grateful to hear from anybody who has had experience of rain water leaks entering behind the dash board ( in this case at left hand side). The water trickles down behind the glove compartment and comes up through the carpet Read more
David,
Have been on holiday but I would be grateful if you would please fax me a copy of the TSB on water ingress into the front footwells of Rover 4oo series cars. My fax number is 01279 843699.

Quick question for the mechanical experts. I'm about to change the brake pads on my Audi Coupe (1991, twin pot front calipers, ABS). I have read in a couple of places that with ABS systems you should not force the pistons back into the brake caliper unless the brake bleed nipple is open, otherwise you will trash the ABS pump. However, the Haynes manual does not mention this. Any ideas? Read more
Good grief!
I thought I was unlucky....
If your coupe is like our 80 16V, the caliper pistons have a hex 'hole' in them so that you can use an allen key to 'rotate and push' the pistons back. Is yours like that?
Martin.
Did anybody hear the news item on radio 4 yesterday morning regarding a variable piston timed engine developed by Mayflower (they are one of the largest engine builders in Europe)it will make these with Ford motor company and will be the biggest change ever to the combustion engine giving far greater economy and performance.I think the piston engine has lot more mileage in it yet. My thoughts too. Given the relatively minor differences in operation compared to a conventional IC engine, I have to say I doubt an overall 40% reduction in fuel consumption, as that indicates something like an efficiency improvement of 67%! I suspect this may be a figure for one specific operating mode or similar on a test engine. Given the extra bearings etc, internal friction and losses will be increased, which won't help.
One other thought - what is the balance like with that extra lever flailing about - no mention on the web site. I imagine it will need some sort of balancer shaft system.

Further to recent ECU posting and 3 rd Camshaft sensor in 18months. I am looking for suggestions for a replacement for an Mreg 2 liter Cavalier, same sort of size same sort of price but something that doesnt suffer an apparently unfixable problem when it hits 5 years and 80,000 miles. ...... or am I asking too much. I hate to state the obvious, but since not every Cavalier has this problem why does yours?
Had an Audi 80 once that destroyed its distributer every 15000 miles, nobody ever knew why......
Anyone know of any Golf/VW specialists within reach of the Greenwich area. A friend of mine is looking for a decent Mk11 1.6 or 1.8 around £2000 and doesn't want to get fleeced
Thanks Read more
I've owned two Mk11's ( Jettas ) an 'F' and a 'G', 1.3 and 1.6 respectively - in terms of build quality and components they were worlds apart - the 'F' 1.3 has far superior paint and metal together with Bosch electrics, whilst the 'G' big bumper 1.6 had dodgy interior welds in the boot at the bottom of the rear window sections, an Hitachi starter motor and the rest of the electrics courtesy of Valeo (ugh)! The 1.6 hydraulic tappets also seemed to wear out faster, even though fully synthetic oil was used and changed regularly ( 6000 miles ). I still have the 1.3 with 155,000 on the clock and using no oil between changes - its been run on fully synth. since birth. But the hydraulic tappet 1.3 does have a design weakness - due to the changes made to the cylinder head to accommodate aforesaid tappets greater stress is put on the head gasket, which fails every 70,000 miles, I can live with that - just keep an eye on the water etc in the weekly checks ! Oh and leave the carb alone if it's running OK. So it's no ball of fire but with average rush hour speeds on the M60 at about 25mph these days, who cares?
Has anybody experienced the benefit of converting a new car to LPG.
If so what car.
Would appreciate you views on the results and whether the refund on cost was forthcoming.
Do you know of a good conversion garage in London / Essex/ Herts?
Thanks Keith Read more
I'm suprised Guy hasn't been on here spouting about his *prize-winning* MKII Golf I converted for him back along. We fitted a 80L tank in the boot and he can still access and remove his spacsaver spare wheel! Performance is unaffected and fuel consumption returns are favourable, also.

HJ pointed out GB Cars, a dealer supplying Renaults at deeply discounted prices.
The website says they are 'UK supplied'. Is there a difference between 'UK supplied ' and 'UK specification' ? Read more
The Renaults are UK supplied via UK Renault dealers with the UK 12 month Renault warranty followed by the UK 2nd and 3rd year dealer warranty. But T lucas does have a point.

Following on loosely from the thread about the psychology of drivers who feel obliged to park with two wheels on the sidewalk, another piece of psycho musing.
Amazing how many drivers are reluctant to get to the crown of the road when waiting to turn right. We have a family joke about this (which Sue is not going to like). It is maintained that whenever I'm held up in this way I sing out "It's a lady!" or "Come on now, Mary!", even before I've seen the driver. I'm usually right. My wife maintains that it's because women are conditioned from birth to give way to men.
One shouldn't generalise but actually I'm sure that insurance statistics would confirm my view that women make much safer drivers than men. Sorry, Sue, that must look patronising. Not intended at all. Read more
MY God what boring lives some of you lead.
Could anyone say what the following would be expected to make at auction:
Mazda 626 2.0 GXi 1996P, Silver, air con. CD, 90K, full mot but no history?
